It's actually pretty simple, with very similar form on each string. It's just clever 2-string skipping that makes it sound it wild. The hardest part about is the extreme stretch, absolute max stretch I can handle, after a careful warmup. But I learned that tapping lick, just to see if I could do it. The rest of the solo however is far more difficult and out of my reach
INSANE! It’s not just “fast”, is incredibly tasteful, rhythmic, mind-bending, clean, unorthodox, unforgiving… man, just insane. Insane. Like nothing else.
There are few players I simply cannot wrap my head around how they can play so many styles and techniques so effortlessly. Guthrie is my favourite because he adds humour, eloquence and humility to his insane ability.
I absolutely love his expression at the 2:35 point. LOL - I had the same expression on my face! After that blistering run, I felt like it was a miracle to still be alive - I guess he felt the same way after having played it haha. He was great several levels ago. I think he's found new levels of genius and technical prowess. I love every version of this song. The main melody is so haunting.
Okay, so…..I’ve seen this man speak in a couple Interviews, knew he was a guitarist, heard the name before. This is my 1st listen of Mr.Govan and GOT-DAYUM……tastefully restrained, yet exquisitely rich and complex. To sum it up for me, and I quote: “Welp, back to the old drawing board…” - Bugs Bunny
I remember watching this 16 years ago when it was published... my jaw hit the floor. I am here 16 years later... it's still on the floor. That little corner of that room where people like Jan Cyrka played... has seen so much incredible guitar come out of it. This session and his other one at the Cornford amp store or whatever it was.... those takes of his songs to me are the best he's ever played them (even better than the album takes). Like good lord... I totally get why Hans Zimmer saw this and said lol thats my guy.
Keep in mind Guthrie improvised a good portion of the solo in this take, and that great guitarists on RUclips have trouble recreating what he thought of on the spot in covers with practice. Guthrie has ascended past the level of expert guitarist, he's by far the most versatile guitarist on the planet.
This jazz fusion style progression is dope. Very glad that someone had the guts to bring it in the new musical age even though this genre is 40+ yo. GG is the Real deal!
Everything about this clip is super cool. Obviously the music, his hair matching the guitar but mostly just the fact that Guthrie is letting us into his world. This is my favourite RUclips clip and I keep coming back every now and again. I actually prefer this to the album version.
Im 67 years old and I've seen a lifetime of musicians (guitarists) up close watching and listening. I cannot think of anyone I can compare this musical angel with rainbow fingers to today. He's on his own cloud above the rest such a combination of heart speed feeling enjoyment to watch and hear. Wish God would have given him a voice to match his strings. In my opinion and thats the only 1 that matters to me Jovan is the greatest guitarist alivee today. Not even some of the greats in their later years were this fantastic. Oh theres great and thens there's the superior great Jovan. What a blend of electric shock. He's so natural of a God given talent. Glad so glad to be alive when he's been alive and playing. No words can describe this genius. He's the Leonardo dVinci of guitar everyone should be blessed to hear and see him play at least once. To bad life is so short. Saw Hendrix 3 times. Best in his day. Seen this man once best in his day. He's a creator of pure art.. Mark my word hes the ultimate best right now in the whole world unless I'm missing something. Lol and thank you Jovan.
This songs speaks to my soul!!! Been listening to this song for an hour and I just can't get enough of it!!! GUTHRIE GOVAN is a once in a lifetime VIRTUOSO!!
I have to get my fix every month watching this video! This is still for me the most amazing guitar performance I have ever seen! The control, feeling and technical ability is just off the scale! To make fusion sound so nice and the song writing of this piece is genius! Guthrie you are a total legend!!
I don't think I'll live to see another guitarist on Guthrie's level. He's all over it. I know fast playing isn't everyone's cup of tea and there are loads of incredible guitarists around but I'm convinced there aren't any better shredders around than this guy, he's in a league of his own.
He's the jack of all trades. His technical abilities, as well as his musical abilities, are incredible. He's even given inspiration to the 19 year old guitar virtuoso, Max Ostro. Ostro will likely be better than Guthrie when he gets to be Guthrie's age in the video, but he's already closing in on many guitarists that are twice his age. Though, we will never see anyone quite like Guthrie again, at least not for a long time.
+dvincentblack You do realise he's probably improvising the solo section. I've seen him play several different versions of this tune. Of course every version is flawless, so you don't even realise he's improving!
I've heard a LOT of guitar players, some of them are absolutely amazing. But you know what? I'm pretty sure Guthrie is the best. So clean and melodic. He shreds as well as anyone, but does it melodically and without overdoing it or taking away from the music. Genius.
I know what you mean... Guthrie really is too good. But at least he's not a dick about it :P. After all of the guitar gods who have said he is the best, he still keeps a levelled head about it. I respect that greatly.
"Beethoven", "Exodus", "The Passion of The Christ", "God Almighty" and several other films, as well as many songs and books, were about Guthrie. Really.
Oh Lord. Today I heard this track and the name Guthrie Govan for *the first time* while listening to the version on the album 'Lee Ritenour's 6 String Theory'. I'm a jazz fan and a 'soul boy' (whatever that is) but this is beyond, just beyond. I'm blown away - I can't think of another way to say it.
Much respect to whoever recorded the drums.... Such flow, it's beautiful how they complement the music. This is as close to perfect as it gets ladies and gentlemen.
You know what's the most insane about this? he mostly just pulled this out of his ass, sure the main licks and riffs are always there, but the middle parts are completely improv, he never plays his songs exactly the same
No kidding lol, this shit is so hot you could a steak on it...my Dad turned me onto to this savage about a month ago and I can't believe I'd never heard of him before...just outstanding stuff.
***** I think the best practice you can have on guitar is choosing a difficult song like this one and simply dissect it... Technically and harmonically.
Not Human. Never has anyone been as good nor will be as good as Guthrie Goven. I'm so grateful to be alive at this particular moment in time to witness a living god. Oh well, maybe in the next life.
I really enjoy Guthrie’s soloing choices. This is way busy for my tastes but I’ve seen another side of him playing within the confines of a great composer. What a gifted player.
R Saldivar I just thought it was funny how you asked if anyone else had heard of him. Now that I think of it, you probably shared it on your Google+ page, and it showed up here. In that case, my bad. The comments section has gotten so confusing.
DaemoniumCC Hey buddy! You get around! As do I apparently. Not chopping down people here like on the Fro video comments? That aside... Guthrie is a mad man. He makes such an incredible sound look so easy, and he does it nearly flawlessly.
Not many humans that can put together so many licks without flaws. Most dont know how next to Impossible that is. He'll say he effed up 10 times in there. But try to find them! The best!
It's hard to describe how I feel listening to this guy. It's emotionally painful, like say seeing how incredibly beautiful Marilyn Monroe was, or an exquisitely beautiful piece of art. It's a transcendent experience like not being able to believe that a human is able to reach this level of beauty. Very few experiences are like it. Very little on this planet reaches this level.
I hear ya bro. Its borderline unfair. Why is his ear and playing ability so high? I have my strengths forsure but this man is off the charts naturally skilled.
I hate to break it to all of you who think Hendrix is God and Eddie Van Halen is the master of technique, but Guthrie Govan is simply the greatest guitar player that has lived to this point. He is so far beyond anyone in technique, versatility and feel that it is ridiculous. That is not based on only this video, but on his entire body of work.
The only reason I don't instantly agree with you is because of the late Shawn Lane. I think Guthrie beats Shawn in terms of versatility, and I don't know if it's fair to compare feel, but Shawn had technique unlike anyone ever in the history of the world.
Shawn Lane was also an extremely talented player and I am a fan of his "Powers of Ten" album. I also have experienced psoriatic arthritis like him, although not to the extent that he had it, so I've always sympathized with him in that area. Obviously, anyone's favorite guitar player is always just an opinion, but I think that many people have not heard many players outside of the radio friendly scope of guys like Hendrix, Clapton and Van Halen. If these same people sat down and gave guys like Guthrie Govan, Shawn Lane, Vinnie Moore, Jason Becker and George Bellas a good listen and still preferred the others, then that's their informed opinion. I just don't see how that would be possible.
Dude u don't get it. Once these dudes get to a certain level they split off in there own ways. Therefore it's impossible to say whos the all time best. I'm sure some random guy in Mexico cnd play better flamenco guitar then goven...they're all just different. No such thing as the best.
Well, Eddie I always found overrated and never really worshipped him the way others do though I still credit him for his work and style. But something a lot of you people don't seem to understand, is that Hendrix was a pioneer. Yeah I worship the guy, I just love his work, but people who refer to him as the "best guitarist" are a bit ignorant and the same goes for people who say he isn't as good as musicians think. Jimi lit a spark for every rock/metal band to come after him, including Guthrie. It's also really stupid to compare a 60s psychedelic blues rock pioneer to Guthrie considering this music didn't exist back then and this is a different genre. I "hate to break it to all of you", but there will never be a "greatest guitar player" because there is so much undiscovered talent out there that you just don't know what people are capable of. Guthrie is phenomenal and all, but even he has technique that he either hasn't learned or needs practice with. *****
Woah, did I just witness a guitarist sit back for an ENTIRE BASS SOLO? That's when you know you've got serious skills, you don't need to put on airs of being a guitar God, you just are one.

I saw the tab for this ...it's just a piece of paper that says don't bother
haha yeah
it's as thick as a phone book
I just spit my cereal all over my computer screen, Asshole.
Buckethead could play it.
Intro is not that hard, I suck and I can play it.
AT 1:43, ready, set, GO! That extended finger reach and then mach speed tasteful lead break is outstanding. I come here to get inspired and SEE guitar nirvana skills.....guitar legend indeed!
Dude is at a superhuman level of guitar playing. No-one else comes close to his understanding & mastery of the instrument.
Buckethead does.
Polyphia kinda hitting ngl
Just when you think you've heard it all, someone like Guthrie comes along. So much talent out there. Love it. Rock on.
His playing is just so unbelievably expressive, his vibrato and bends are just perfect.
There are few players I simply cannot wrap my head around how they can play so many styles and techniques so effortlessly. Guthrie is my favourite because he adds humour, eloquence and humility to his insane ability.
The guy is so humble. I met him at a gig in Chelmsford and he was so polite and I was in complete awe! England's best guitarist.
Guthrie is outstanding. A joy to listen to. More Guthrie in the world would do us no harm.
In my opinion, the best guitar player that has ever lived.
:))) not even close!

And to think he has gotten BETTER now... seriously Mr Guthrie, stahp!
Okay, so…..I’ve seen this man speak in a couple
Interviews, knew he was a guitarist, heard the name before. This is my 1st listen of Mr.Govan and GOT-DAYUM……tastefully restrained, yet exquisitely rich and complex.
To sum it up for me, and I quote:
“Welp, back to the old drawing board…” - Bugs Bunny
I remember watching this 16 years ago when it was published... my jaw hit the floor. I am here 16 years later... it's still on the floor. That little corner of that room where people like Jan Cyrka played... has seen so much incredible guitar come out of it. This session and his other one at the Cornford amp store or whatever it was.... those takes of his songs to me are the best he's ever played them (even better than the album takes). Like good lord... I totally get why Hans Zimmer saw this and said lol thats my guy.
The single greatest guitar solo I've ever heard in my life. Every time I listen my jaw literally drops to the floor.
Check out his work on a fretless guitar...
@@KBJ58 I saw a few videos of him trying out a vigier and it was amazing, what would you recommend?

????
Quite simply the greatest solo performance I have ever heard.
amazing how he holds his pick rolled back in his pointer finger while tapping, then flips it back into picking position in a nanosecond
might be the best guitar video i've ever seen
Keep in mind Guthrie improvised a good portion of the solo in this take, and that great guitarists on RUclips have trouble recreating what he thought of on the spot in covers with practice. Guthrie has ascended past the level of expert guitarist, he's by far the most versatile guitarist on the planet.
Freihguy Friend, I concur 👍
I agree
indeeed
In fact yeah I'm gonna say it's definately the best guitar video i've ever seen
This jazz fusion style progression is dope.
Very glad that someone had the guts to bring it in the new musical age even though this genre is 40+ yo.
GG is the Real deal!
He ain't no al dimeola or terry kath
Jerry Woods. And they certainly ain’t him.
This is what happens when you give a wizard a guitar.
He could be Dumbledore son. Or Gandalfs ^-^ @senõrburtango
This is what happens when you make a pact with the devil for improved improvising skills
Gandalf couldn't do this
SeñorBurtango I can stop noticing the top on his guitar, purdy dam gay imo
Shut up, eric.
Everything about this clip is super cool. Obviously the music, his hair matching the guitar but mostly just the fact that Guthrie is letting us into his world. This is my favourite RUclips clip and I keep coming back every now and again. I actually prefer this to the album version.
Man, I'm tuning in nearly 12 years too late, but Guthrie is the greatest solo guitarist I've ever heard... LOVE those burning fingers!
Why am I learning about this guy now for the first time? This is otherworldly.
Guthrie Gavon is one of the best guitarists I've ever seen play in my life; and yes I've played guitar for 44 years
after 44 years you might wanna learn how to write his name 😜
Guthrie Gallon
Guthrie Govind
Guthrie Gavin
Every time I listen to GG, it’s as amazing as the first time. EVERY single thing he plays is freaking ridiculous!
Not just the guitar playing but the progression, composition or song itself is really unique. Very appealing.
There’s guitarists, there’s virtuosos, and then there’s Guthrie Govan.
What about Shawn Lane and Allan holdsworth ?
At 2:20, you can see Guthrie casting his spell to make him shred faster
You made me laugh so hard man 😂
I have to get my fix every month watching this video!
@@drinks-your-waterOh, yea I forget about Max. That kid is incredible, he has probably the most fluid legato runs I've ever seen.
I met Guthrie at rhythm room in phx last year. Ended up drinking beers and smoking joints with him Bryan and Marco at their hotel after. Surreal
Pure sonic guitar bliss! I'm not going to rest till I've mastered every note of this! Peace!
+dvincentblack You do realise he's probably improvising the solo section. I've seen him play several different versions of this tune. Of course every version is flawless, so you don't even realise he's improving!
How is it going?
@@Overslide666 i'm curious too
I can't stop watching this video over and over.....
Such a creative player. Love his use of chromatic passing notes. Makes the technical stuff seamless at times
I've heard a LOT of guitar players, some of them are absolutely amazing. But you know what? I'm pretty sure Guthrie is the best. So clean and melodic. He shreds as well as anyone, but does it melodically and without overdoing it or taking away from the music. Genius.
Whenever I think I´ve become good at playing the guitar I watch this video and immediately returns to reality...
Really.
This cat is the whole package, the real deal. Can’t wait to see him live one of these days.
Easily one of the greatest guitarists of our time, if not the greatest.
he’s flawlessly replicating one of the hardest guitar solos of all time while i’m here struggling on the paranoid android solo..
What is it? I don't know.
This is my warm-up before I stretch my fingers
This guys legato picking is so absolutely robotic and clean its just so insane. Never gets old. Ever
Much respect to whoever recorded the drums.... Such flow, it's beautiful how they complement the music. This is as close to perfect as it gets ladies and gentlemen.
Pete Riley played the drums on the Erotic Cakes album - ruclips.net/video/pBd5SA7RfT4/видео.html
Amazing playing and technique, amazing melodies and sounds. Amazing Mr. Guthrie Govan!
You know what's the most insane about this? he mostly just pulled this out of his ass, sure the main licks and riffs are always there, but the middle parts are completely improv, he never plays his songs exactly the same
there is too many notes in that middle part to play it the same everytime!
That's what makes it so good😁
No kidding lol, this shit is so hot you could a steak on it...my Dad turned me onto to this savage about a month ago and I can't believe I'd never heard of him before...just outstanding stuff.
***** I think the best practice you can have on guitar is choosing a difficult song like this one and simply dissect it... Technically and harmonically.
all of guthrie's solo are improvised, even the ones he does in studio in his albums !
Keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Everytime i watch this.
Thank god this exists
Not Human.
Never has anyone been as good nor will be as good as Guthrie Goven.
I'm so grateful to be alive at this particular moment in time to witness a living god.
Oh well, maybe in the next life.
The4thDensity check out Tommy Emmanuel. I would say the same thing but for acoustic guitar.
Jesus, take it easy
Who the flying f*** would dislike this! God have fingers on you..........
I really enjoy Guthrie’s soloing choices. This is way busy for my tastes but I’ve seen another side of him playing within the confines of a great composer. What a gifted player.
I've heard this dude for a while and hes awesome. Anyone else heard of this dude?

DaemoniumCC what what?
R Saldivar I just thought it was funny how you asked if anyone else had heard of him.
Now that I think of it, you probably shared it on your Google+ page, and it showed up here. In that case, my bad. The comments section has gotten so confusing.
DaemoniumCC agreed
DaemoniumCC Hey buddy! You get around! As do I apparently. Not chopping down people here like on the Fro video comments?
That aside... Guthrie is a mad man. He makes such an incredible sound look so easy, and he does it nearly flawlessly.
Not many humans that can put together so many licks without flaws. Most dont know how next to Impossible that is. He'll say he effed up 10 times in there. But try to find them! The best!
Greatest 240p video on youtube.
That ending starting at 4:09 is completely mind-blowing, off the charts, amazing!!!!!! The rest is just magical as well!
2:10-2:24 Can you imagine what the tab of this would look like?
It works, as long as you use poster board and print in size 6 font.
Totally agree. I've been convinced for a while that he is the best
Can everyone agree Guthrie is the king? Absolutely brilliant! No thought, it just flows out of him!
I´m happy when i listen to him.
2021 remembering this legend!!
He's got hands that dance like a couple of spiders on a hotplate. Amazing, pure genius.
Woah, did I just witness a guitarist sit back for an ENTIRE BASS SOLO? That's when you know you've got serious skills, you don't need to put on airs of being a guitar God, you just are one.
This is better than the studio version. i like the other one but this is much better.
