I was pretty sure it was just a matter of getting the tabs past the stops, but since it was so stiff I figured I would reference The Backyard Mechanics Bible.... aka RUclips. Watching the video the "ears" on your box seem a lot easier to bend, but heading back out in the heat, a bit more pressure did it and the filter is changed. Local places charge $50 for this. Buy the filter and it costs roughly 2 minutes of time. Thank you for the post. These things give me confidence to just to it myself.
My mechanic replaced the cabin filter wrong and as a result there was a whistling noise when the heater was on.... I had a feeling it was that so not wanting to make an appointment watched this. Not as smooth as the video but very doable. THANKS!!!
The right side of the glove compartment was very hard to pop out at first, because you have to push inward quite hard. The prices for the filters are much better than at the dealerships.
Unfortunately, the 2004 Dodge Durango did not come equipped with a cabin filter. Dodge only put access to a cabin filter in the 2009 - 2016 Durangos. Thanks for watching!
Thanx for the info, at least you didn't tell me to simply "ROLL the WINDOWS DOWN!" I am having trouble finding ANY info on this year RAM, even at my local dealer, what gives?
Around 2005 80% of new cars were coming out with the cabin air filter option. Today about 90% of new cars come with the cabin air filter option. Most trucks still do not have a cabin air filter option. I do not know why the engineer did not choose to put one in. If you are having a problem with your air flow or a smell in your vehicle you may be able to find a car detailer that can clean out your ventilation in a safe way.
I just purchased this vehicle about 3 months ago, the AC worked like a champ, now it doesn't. Thought the cabin air filter may have been clogged. Guess not. I'll check the 50 other things that could be the problem, ... or simply "roll the windows down!!! XD
Question for you guys, How different is an `02 Ram 1500 to a 2000 Durango? Would appreciate some feed back, can't seem to find the spot for the filter on the Ram. Do I have to cut my own access hole? Appreciate some feedback, thanx in advance.
Really simple and I was going to get charged 100 or more to replace mine. They also said they were putting a disinfectant on it, which is toxic, and they would have to air it out before giving it back. Why would you do that knowing its toxic. I'd rather do this myself. Thanks
I just had this done by the dealer Saturday. I use the dealer because I have a lifetime service warranty and do not want to risk nullifying it. On our way home I noticed problems with the passenger side A/C. It stared by blowing warm air even when set at 60 degrees...Driver's side still blows cold. I also found what appears to be a broken clip of some kind on the passenger floor! I called them and the mechanic said that NOTHING they did could have caused any problems with the A/C! I have NEVER had a problem with the A/C before now and I don't think it is a coincidence!! Can anyone offer an opinion??
I am sorry to hear they did not properly take care of your car. If they installed a filter that is of a thicker media then it will change the airflow pressure. It would be good to open up your glove box and see where the clip was broken off. Inexperienced installers tend to accidently break off the dampener cord.
Thanks for the video. Yeah, that right side of the glove box is a bitch but everything else is simple. I did mine after 2 years and almost 36k and it was a lot dirtier than I thought it would be- definitely was overdue. I'll be doing mine every year from now on.

What would cause my widows to fog up with the defroster on .
And a smokey mist comes out of the vents .
It would be best to have your dealer take a look at it.
Rick Harker A leak in the heater core. If it smells like antifreeze....that is likely the issue.
