The Kings-Rangers double-overtime thriller in 2014 deserves a deep rewind

- Опубликовано: 20 май 2022
- It’s June 13th, 2014. We’re in L.A. where the hometown Kings are battling the New York Rangers in game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. Tied at two, nearly 15 minutes into a second overtime. Someone’s gotta score.
If LA can take control of the puck, every shot attempt has the chance to bring them their second Cup in three years. Their road has been anything but straightforward, they’ve overcome the odds with absurd regularity, in large part thanks to Jonathan Quick - their man between the pipes.
If the Rangers can get another past him they’ll not only live to see game six but potentially steal the momentum of a series that could easily be in their control. If they can fully pull off the comeback, it would be the final feather in the already feather-filled cap of one of the most impressive goaltenders we’ve ever seen.

Finally, another hockey breakdown.
I get Football, Baseball and Basketball reign supreme in the states, but Hockey has always provided me much more entertaining, dramatic and inspiring storylines. I wish it were more popular in the states
We needed this one
These are called 'Rewinds'.
"Uhhhhh..can I get a Whopper?!" Sir, this is a Wendy's.
Good hopefully they cover how the series was fixed with goalie interference and that BS call on Zuc that led to Gaborik goal in game 5.
Playoff Hockey > any other pro sports playoffs
While this is the greatest overtime win in LA Kings history, I just feel bad for King Henrik. This was his only chance at the Stanley Cup and his team let him down again.
Nah. Although this gave the Kings the Stanley Cup, the miracle on Manchester is still the Kings greatest OT playoff win. Rallying from 5-0 down in the 3rd period to tie the game, then winning in OT vs the dynasty era Oilers in 1982 will forever be their greatest win---- Kings fan since 72.
That's unfortunate for King Henrik. He had a chance to win the Stanley Cup, but it was too little too late. That's the unfortunate part
@@sonicthehedgehoggamingfan8028 They probably should've run it back to the Final in 2015 as well, except that year was when the Lightning fully emerged as an Eastern Conference power and taking down the President's Trophy winner in round three was the feather in that run's cap. (also one of a handful of game seven losses for Henrik, many of their other lost series ended before that point.)
Yup, Hank is one of my favorite goalies ever and it’s and outright tragedy he didn’t win a Cup.
I agree, and honestly this Rangers team doesn’t get enough credit. I know this is going to sound funny, but this has got to be the closest 5 game series ever.
The 2014 Kings playoff run could very well be the most insane title run in sports history when you think about it.
And the 2012 run would give it stiff competition but for totally opposite reasons. A dominating run by the lowest seed. They didn't lose a road game till the Finals
@@ahraranwar3227 Agreed.
@@ahraranwar3227 And the LA kings of 2012 would have to take on the cunucks in the opening round many fans predicted the LA kings would be the 1st stepping stone in Vancouver Cunucks ascent to coronation as stanley cup champions
@@StFidjnr I definitely think if the Canucks had beaten the Kings they would have made it back to the finals
I happened to meet Lundqvist at my job this year. While he never won the cup he is one of the best of all time. I was freaking out but he was kind enough to take a picture and chat for a few minutes. He was very kind and personable, and seems comfortable with where he’s at in retirement.
It's testament to his character that whilst many dislike the Rangers, I rarely meet anyone who didn't want Lundqvist to win that cup.
Very cool
As a rangers fan he was facing 40+ shots a night while other teams were maxing at 30 shots. SMH we never did him right
@@Chyeahokay Hey congratulations great win last name for you guys. That’s coming from dejected bruins fan.
@@Chyeahokay I was fortunate to see Hank start at MSG in his final playing year and win against a good Hurricanes team. sad he never got to hoist a Cup
I can't lie. My first thought when Lundqvist retired was..."He'll make a great episode of Untitled."
This whole playoff run was a heart attack for Kings fans. What a year
Game 7 against Chicago is probably the best and most anxiety-inducing hockey game I’ve ever watched.
@@jasonfire3434 definitely! I was watching it in an LA sports bar packed shoulder to shoulder with fans, it was insane.
@@jasonfire3434 I watched that game with my dad. He was calm and I was freaking out the entire time.
I’ll live 5 years less because of it. Worth it.
@@jasonfire3434 that whole series with Chicago was the best playoff series I have ever seen. My favorite was the reverse sweep on San Jose though.
seeing hank laying on the ice after that goal was just so heartbreaking.
Absolute worst
@@TreySarver was the only time I can remember being upset at a sporting event, Hank deserves a cup
The agony of defeat.
Incredible moment in NHL history. However, imo, this moment also produced the saddest image in NHL history. King Henrik after the goal. You can tell he knows that was his best chance.
wish the rangers won for him, hopefully they do for igor
I was at this game, very last row at Staples Center. The longest overtimes in my life followed by pure ecstasy of being around 20k screaming Kings fan
I bet that was amazing. When I saw my Caps win in 2018 I was across the street at a pub from our arena and running out and screaming/crying/cheering with thousands of fans that watched there/around the town was amazing but can't fathom how much better it would've been had I actually see it in person lol
So cool. Great memories
So jealous lol I’d love to see round 2 hockey. Pls wish me luck
@@yenohtnA It will be your turn someday I promise. If you’re talking about the lease the only thing they did wrong was playing Tampa in the first round
Should've used Doc Emrick's call of the winner. An absolute classic
Came here to say this. Way better call.
No…
YES
"Great save" [followed by Kings scoring off the rebound of the "great save"]
For real..I assume that was the Kings home commentator but what an awful call
Secret Base: *plays video involving the 2013-14 L.A. Kings
Every San Jose Sharks fan: “Ight, imma head out!”
Pain
Heh
Thank you for making this video. For years this event has haunted my mind, being a rangers fan since the 2012 playoffs. It was Henrik who made me fall in love with this team, and this amazing sport. This video has given me closure on this haunting game. It’s helped me feel a feeling I haven’t felt about this game before: acceptance. Thank you secret base.
Couldn’t have said it better myself
I’m never gonna have closure or acceptance of this series. We should’ve won 4-1.
@@seandillon1359 same the refs ruined henrik’s chance of being crowned
My dad still hasn't gotten over this series, and he hopes they finally get it done this year
@@thylacine519 hopefully. It’s absolutely possible, we just have to play hard each and every game. We also can’t just give up 50 shots a game and expect Shesty to bail us out each time.
it really is a shame Lundqvist never got a ring, he absolutely deserved one, and that's coming from a Flyers fan.
He definitely deserved it and I feel sad 😢 he didn’t get it
This takes me back. Still can’t believe Brown is retiring. 20th greatest American goal scorer ever in the lowest scoring era on the most defensive team. And people barely talk about him.
First American captain to win the Cup IIRC
@@scrub_jay second
@@captainjelliemull7895 Good catch. Credit to Derian Hatcher!
And the all time hits leader
That stretch of years with the Kings and Blackhawks being the top 2 teams in the league was awesome. Their series always felt like the Cup Finals.
I remember watching like the nhl network or something and them saying whoever won the conference final between the hawks and kings in 2013 and 2014 would win the cup, and they weren’t wrong
Man as a Kings fan, those cup runs were really awesome to watch!
Great memories happy you
im a pens fan, and even i still get such a heart wrenching feeling watching hank just lay out on the ice completely defeated. cant imagine how devastating that must have felt.
henrik deserved that cup
I’m a kings fan, and although I am happy the kings won, I always feel bad for him when I see the picture, because he definitely deserved the cup at some point in his career
I remember this day like it was yesterday. I wasn’t even nervous at the end anymore, just relieved. I remember in the post game, the analysts talked about how the king’s core was still young enough to win more cups. Didn’t happen unfortunately, but I’m happy they won those two.
Funnily enough I remember having the same reaction but on the other side, pure enjoyment that Hank made it to a cup but also being able to acknowledge the kings as well
This series broke my spirit.
I am with you on that. watching this breakdown pained me almost as much as watching it live did just heartbreaking.
i'm just looking at the comments. I still don't think i can actually watch the video. Too heartbreaking to relive
Those Kings teams were so magical but it all seems like a fever dream now. Watching this reminded me of so many little details I had forgotten. I watched this game live in my weird little store front apartment in Echo Park. My wife who was pregnant with our first child had invited some people over to hang out after the game. I never thought this game would last so long so here I was watching one of the most thrilling games in NHL history on mute while trying to explain its significance to my wife’s friend’s disinterested boyfriend and brother. There are some diehard hockey fans in LA but they are few and far between. So as a Kings fan you always have to justify your passion for this team and this sport. To this day I still hold a grudge against those people in my home who were dead silent when Alec Martinez sealed the deal in one of the greatest moments in LA sports history. I was freaking out but I had no one to share that excitement with. This was just a few months before we moved out of that funky little storefront and fatherhood changed my life forever. But I’ll never forget that glorious moment. Go Kings, go!
An extra note: the call at the end was from the CBC broadcast. That was the last NHL game CBC will produce until at least 2026 (year when the current tv deal expires). The next season, 2014-15, Rogers Sportsnet took over the national tv rights and Hockey Night in Canada broadcasting. And while CBC still broadcasts HNIC, they are doing it under a sublicense deal with Rogers. So yeah, for Canadians this moment has an special meaning because it was the end of an era for Canada’s biggest sports tradition in television.
And secret base butchered it with horrible editing.
Kings fan here. I remember crying when I saw this live
The series vs the Sharks was one of my favorite times in my sports-watching career.
Marty St. Louis’ goal on Mother’s Day in that Pittsburgh series deserves it’s own rewind
The slander Henrik gets is astounding. Covered the deficiencies of mediocre teams to deep playoff runs several times
2012 and 2014 were great years. As a lifelong resident of Toronto, I was never a Leaf's fan but had loved the LA Kings my entire life. Even know I have an old Gretzky jersey, the royal purple and the newest black and silver in addition to other memorabilia.
Seeing the Kings win with stellar precision in 2012 and to win again as the ultimate underdog in 2014 was incredible.
GKG 4Life.
The Doc Emerick call was probably my favorite of his memorable calls
ALEC M A R T I N E Z
Only the best announcer of all time!
Too bad they didn’t use it in this vid
No… Don’t understand the infatuation with that guy. Good yes. Great no. When he’s used the expression “Knifed his way through the defense” for the 15x in a game, I’d beg for him to find another verb…
@@BTBEV3469 his vocabulary is way broader than anyone else you are absolutely nitpicking.
Those LA teams were so good
Slava Voynov's stick save at 10:52 still gives me chills!
I would love to see a rewinder of the 2017 Eastern Conference Finals game 7 as a sens fan it scares me to this day but I would like some closer on that game
As a Lightning fan, it still makes me sad that we traded Marty to the Rangers even though the Bolts would ultimately end up winning this trade.
Sacrifices unfortunately are inevitable. You all are at least two time repeating champions and looking for a third. My Caps got knocked out again in the first round when we should've put Carolina away.
*And eventually 2 (possibly 3???) Cups in the future.
Did you guys really win this trade tho? Callahan didn't do anything for you guys lol
@@heyitsbranigan I'd say so. 2 ECF's and a Cup Final with Callahan and TB compared to the 2 year run with Marty and the Rangers. Plus the trade tree for Tampa is more fruitful and successful in the long run with one of the assets turning into Anthony Cirelli and a future 6th round pick for this year. Rangers don't really have any of the pieces left from that trade, and if they do it's probably depth in the minors.
You won a cup with Marty and then BACK2BACK cups without him! You’re not allowed to be sad about anything ever! You’re basically the luckiest fans in hockey in this century.
I remember this breaks my heart as a Rangers fan! This was our best chance to win the cup for the first time since 1994! Sadly I was born the year after they won it so i've never got to see them win it in my lifetime. :( It's a shame that Lundqvist never got to win a cup as talented as he was!
As a fellow Rangers fan born in 95’, I feel your pain.
One of the most brutal goals in nhl history. The Rangers couldn’t cover there man on the odd man rush and perhaps the greatest rebound of all time ends an otherworldly run by the King, to the Kings.
It's important to remember when Quick was good, he was one of the greatest of all time in the playoffs. 2011-2012 season had quick at a .946 save percentage in the playoffs that led to a cup. That is other worldly...
As a rangers fan I didn't need this
We're already getting smoked by the canes and I still can't belive we lost 4 times in overtime and 2 of them were in double
Big win today they are still in this just need to keep the momentum going and steal one in carolina
Best kind of poorly aged comment. No quit in NY baby!
I love this series and watch every single one…but this one hurts 🥺
“What do I do with my hands!” Love the Kings! Go Kings Go! Great Rewind.
Almost a decade later, this hurts so much as a Rangers fan. I'm still haunted by the Kings goal horn.
This is the video that ive been waiting for from your channel literally for years, this is the greatest goal of all time
Quick vs Lundqvist will always be a historical matchup one was always so motivated to outplay the other and it was amazing to watch
Coming from a kings fan, we have watched this clip at least 30 time together as a family.
This Kings team gets overlooked a lot despite an amazing playoff run, which this video demonstrates very well. They won three game 7s on the road! That had never been done, (if not mistaken). Also down 3-0 in the first round, it was an unprecedented run and should be remembered by hockey fans. Thanks for the rewind. Well done!
As a Rangers fan, I saw this video pop up but I wasn’t ready to relive the pain. Great recap, but it still hurts lol
I'm from Alberta Canada but was in Seattle Washington watching this game on TV with my wife's American family.
Random memory of this game. No one other than us Canadians were interested in seeing it. 😆
Avalanches 3OT win over the Panthers deserves a rewind. First Stanley cup for the Avalanche and Patrick Roy was perfect as a goalie
1994 ECF finals Game 7 needs a rewind in future as well
Genuinely love these videos so much! Absolutely stunning content
Oh man.. reliving this through this video just brought back so many emotions.. so many highs.. so many lows.. what a wild ride these playoffs were
I love you Secret Base. Thank you for hockey content.
As a rangers fan this is pain… God man I wish we got Henrik that cup :(
Oh man. I was on a late flight from Vegas to NY when this was happening - full plane, tons of people watching - cheering and booing happening all up and down the plane the entire flight. Was one hell of a way to watch a cup game.
Love the new animated graphics!
I've always wanted a rewind of this moment!!! Thank you Secret Base!!!!
2008 National Championship. Kansas vs. Memphis. Mario's Miracle deserves a Deep Rewind video.
As a hawks fan this video brought me eternal pain
Alec Martinez
Denied us a 3 peat and I hate them for it
Dude I can’t believe you did a video on this!!! By far my favorite sports moment of all time. This is the type of goal every fan and player dream of, double overtime at home to win the cup. That whole run was insane and hard to enjoy as it was happening because of all of the overtimes and game 7’s they needed to get there.
This goal was the first ever RUclips video I watched, and definitely my favorite sports moment of all time as well
No playoff run will ever stress me out more than the Kings 2014 cup run. I don’t think we’ll see another one like that for a long time.
Great narration, thoroughly enjoyed.
It pains me we never got henrik his cup he deserved it he bailed out the team consistently just to get let down by them every single time
As a Rangers fan this Finals was honestly the greatest and worst trip that the franchise had ever experience. If a few extra calls were actually whistled and if the defense didn't collapse this outcome would have looked so different
"that this franchise ever experienced"... Ever heard of 1950 ? 1979? Hockey haven't been created the day you were born
@@MonTube2006 Well I'm obviously overexagerrating so you don't need to sound like a know-it-all. You go to a bar and try to find a fan saying "Aw man I wish the Rangers won the 1950 or 1979 Stanley Cup" and let me know when you're successful lmao
What about expressing yourself in a more accurate/direct manner ? In that way you wouldn't have to justify yourself
Btw I'm not a "know-it-all" kind of guy you want to portray myself. Better luck next time 🤷♂️
@@MonTube2006 Okay...if you want your "you're right" cookie have a bite. I'm not gonna try and dictate myself in a better manner because some random mfer online told me to. Carry on with your day good sir
I’m enjoying the hockey content
Yes. More Puck please.
I'm thoroughly enjoying this influx of hockey content 🔥
Stephane Matteau’s double overtime game 7 goal needs a deep rewind
This⤴️
The Kings comeback in the Sharks series down 3-0 is still the craziest comeback I've ever seen. Not just because it was a 3-0 comeback but the Kings actually took complete control in every single one of those games they won. They completely manhandled the Sharks with a combined score of 18-5 in the last 4 games that you almost forgot they were the team that was down 3-0 lol
That Chi v. LA game seven deserves a deep rewind. That series was the best of the 2010s between the two most dominant teams of that decade.
Really liking the new hockey content!!!!
YES. I can’t remember how many times I’ve requested y’all doing this moment and u did. Very happy rn
the animations on the plays were sick! more of those would be amazing
Beautiful video. GO KINGS GO
Thanks for breaking back such painful memories, but great job! One nitpick is that it was Brian Boyle who scored the shorthanded goal for the Rangers in in game 5. You guys have it listed as Marty St. Louis
Awesome video, GKG
The kings 2012 run and 2014 runs where amazing
Please do Rangers-Devils game 7 in 1994. Please? As a Rangers fan, I feel like I deserve that after watching this
2002 Avs also played 3-7 game series, before losing game 7 of WCFs in Detroit...running totally out of gas,& losing 7-0. But they had made at least game 7 of WCFs-4 straight seasons.(winning the Cup in 7 in 2001)...& played in at least game 6 of WCFs...6 of 7 seasons...talk about a lot of hockey. (won another Cup in 1996,at the start of that 7 year run)We haven't been back to WCFs since.
Immaculate timing as always yall
Being born in the Central valley of California , I never really played or followed hockey growing up. Then I met a friend who moved from Canada while I was in highschool and his family and I watched the 2010 winter olympics. I remember watching Team USA vs Team Canada and saying whoever this goalie on Team USA I will follow their because if that's their goalie they'll always have a shot. Turned out to be Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings. Me being a Laker/Dodger/(LA) Raider fan i was shocked/ecstatic. After reading/watching the early Kings history it was crazy to see this team go on such a run. It was like I was meant to be King fan and now I follow them till this day.
it's cool you folks are doing more NHL stuff
This moment never gets old.
No one will ever repeat the crazy playoff runs the kings had in 2012 and 2014
2012 they went up 3-0 in every series as an 8th seed and only lost one road and it was game 5 of the Stanley cup finals
Then 2014 down 3-0 in the opening series vs. the sharks and come back with the reverse sweep. Then in the conference semi finals Down 3 games 2 to the ducks and came back on them. And then that series vs. the black hawks. They never had the lead in game 7 I remember going crazy at dodger stadium with my co worker, we also worked at staples center at the time, when Martinez scored that OT winner. And then all those epic OT games with the rangers. I don’t think we will ever see a team win 3 game 7’s all on the road. I was in the building at staples center working for both Stanley cup clinching games. I’ll never forget it !
As a Ducks fan it still breaks my heart the Ducks could’ve very well been on the other end or on the same trajectory as the Kings if it wasn’t for those 4 Game 7 heartbreaks as much as it would hurt I would want to see a collapse on those 2013-2018 teams soon
Well on the bright side at least you got to see Selanne and Getzlaf/Perry win a cup with the team. Could be worse, you could be the Sharks. Years of failure with one of the best teams in the league and now they are signing older players to ridiculous contracts when they should be trading them away for assets. Ducks current trajectory isn’t too far off of becoming a playoff team again. Hopefully we’ll see another Freeway Faceoff series again soon.
2015 has to be the most heartbraking out of all of those years. We were one damn game away from the cup finals and we had so many chances to win those OT games vs the Blackhawks that we lost. I think we would've beaten Tampa that year, too. That was easily our best team ever besides the 07 team.
@@davidlaurence216 I still unfortunately give a slight edge to 2014 but not by much just because it was our arch nemesis I can’t even count how many times the Ducks hit the post in Game 1 and it definitely didn’t help how much lack of faith Boudreau had in Andersen if he starts instead of Hiller and Gibson I truly believe Ducks win that series
@@davidlaurence216 I remember just feeling crushed that Game 7. I firmly believe we would've won the cup that year if it weren't for that loss.
Oh man, that collapse video would be 15 minutes of PAIN.
The Kings…are the Kings! 👑
Lets Go Kings 🔥
Fun fact, the pick used to draft Martinez came from the Capitals. LA and DC did a day 2 deal in the 2007 NHL draft, where LA got DC’s 2007 4th, while DC got LA’s 2007 6th and 2008 4th. LA’s pick was Alex Martinez, and DC selected goalies Dan Dunn with the 2007 6th, and Braden Holtby with the 2008 4th. Trade worked out pretty well for both teams.
The goal horn guy just wouldn’t take his finger off the button. It went on forever. Amazing. \m/ I watch the Martinez goal whenever I need a pickup.
Gaborik was clearly offsides on that Game 7 tying goal. Will never get over that
I graduated from high school the same night! One of the best days of my life!!
I love how both of the Kings cup runs were complete opposite in terms of goals scored and against.
Warren Morris walking off the College World Series with a HR (I believe the only time that's ever happened) and Whit Merrifield walking off the last CWS ever at Rosenblatt Stadium (just the sheer amount of future MLBers in that series) deserve a deep rewind
Can we get a 1997 game 7 World Series rewind, it hurts very much for Cleveland fans but it needs to be looked back on.
Yes, love to see another hockey video! Need a collapse video based on the entire (albiet short) history of the Atlanta Thrashers before they moved to Winnipeg.
That’s 2014 LA Kings team my god never forget them I remember when we were played the San Jose Sharks I remember everyone was saying they’re gonna get swept and I was the only person that says no they’re gonna come back and win the series and they did the next round against the Anaheim ducks another great series and the first ever the battle of Southern California then the greatest series of all time since the 94 Eastern conference finals between the New York rangers and the New Jersey Devils one of the best series of all time and then the kings just destroyed the Rangers in the finals and I went to every single Kings home game that year except for game one of the Stanley Cup finals
Some true poetry from Jon
This moment brings me so much pain along with the Henrique goal in 2012
I was there for this, it’s a moment I’ll never forget #GKG
W that game was so good and miss that team so much 🥺🥺🥺
I was watching this live on TV and a friend I was watching it with pointed out that Alec Martinez probably literally just lived out a childhood fantasy. Double overtime, the Stanley Cup on the line, and you put in the game-winning goal? How many times did he imagine that scenario as a kid? And he just did it.
and as a defense man too,, right?
I remember this game vividly. I was watching it at my apartment waiting for it to be over to get dinner. When the first OT ended we decided to go to a bar like a 2 minute drive away and I drove like a bat out of hell to get there and parked even though we had 20 minutes. Then ordered a burger and literally was afraid to look down to pick it up to eat as I might miss something. Place went nuts for about 2 minutes when they scored and then went back to normal. One of the best moments of my sports life.
The 12-14 Kings were virtually unbeatable and the only reason the prime Hawks didn’t threepeat if not four-peat.
There is so much that can be said about the 2012-14 Kings. Firing the coach halfway through 2012, the two massively impactful deadline pickups of Carter and Gaborik, the domination of the West in 2012, the three Game 7s and reverse sweep in 2014, the 2013 series against the Sharks and Blues featuring 11 out of 13 games decided by 1 goal... it was truly a golden age for them
I remember that game. It was so intense.
