Liquid Level Detection on a Coagulation Device

This device is a liquid-level detecting probe that is used for a coagulation analyzer. A coagulation analyzer is used to test a patient’s blood clotting properties to allow for screening and treatment. This device would detect the blood sample level in a vial and aspirate the necessary amount of blood for the required tests. The current device does not have a 100% success rate in detecting the level of the liquid and can be falsely triggered by a liquid bubble or foam on top of the sample. This causes the probe to aspirate air, leading to incorrect results from the blood tests. The goal of this team was to improve upon this current design so that the probe accurately detects the level of the liquid level in the vial and aspirates only blood with a 100% success rate.
