We call these as 'Undraalu' in telugu states, which are specially made on Vinayaka Chavithi. We also have it as a snack where we just follow the above process till the steam part and then have it with a spicy pickle(aachar). It tastes delicious 😋😋😋
Thanks, tried this today and this is good idea in general. Looked excellent and reasonably spongy (although not as good as shown here and mostly need to add more water while kneading) but taste wise not so good unless eaten with condiments, no where close to normal Idli fry taste, which is expected of course. This is despite having used fresh and good quality rice flour. This has to be eaten with sauce or chutney that is shown in recipe as it doesn't taste as well on its own even with tadka etc.. Also eat as soon as possible as these ones hardened very quickly, microwave didn't help later on with texture. Going to experiment with spicing up the dough before steaming next time around. And maybe will try putting fermented urad dal mix to improve taste.
Actually u must gather the cooked rice balls and add it to the following tempering: in a pan add two to three spoons of seasame oil splutter mustard seeds and add a tspn of split urad dal, 2 slit green chillies, hing powder, few curry leaves and then either idli podi.. or red chilli powder to taste and saute the rice balls until the outer is little crisp. This serves as a very good teatime snack.
Actually the secret for the best output is on the quantity of water that gets added. Rice always tends to absorb lot of water & gets harden fast. So for better output the water quantity needs to be increased & the consistency of the dough has to be soft when you press it with ur fingers. Added to that coconut oil adds a lot more taste when you add it while mixing the dough.

A cool mouthwatering 'Goli idli'. We call it as 'ammanik kozhukkattai' and make it with left over dough during Vinayaka chathurthi. My friend used to keep a well soaked kabuli chana inside every ball before steaming them. She would offer it as a 'neivedhyam' in our local Vinayaka temple. Some others place a small piece of coconut (the size of a human tooth) inside every ball. They both taste very good. It also aids in the perfect cooking of these perfect balls!
