I just bought a 2009 D-15 that has been stored in a case for 11 years. The pick guard still had the plastic cover on it. I love it, the more I play it, the warmer it becomes. While I clearly have G.A.S. (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) it's going to take a lot to come up to the quality of my Martin. It will never be sold and I hope that someone in my family will continue to love it after I'm gone. Not the most expensive Martin for sure ... but what a lovely sound! Enjoy your videos!
D15m is my first and only Martin so far. And I liked the first guitar for the Sitka until you strummed a few notes then I was thinking it was the second one for the Spruce. But in all I’m shocked at just how bright the D-15m was. That’s amazing as it was so close to the Sitka.
Just bought what I thought was a D-15m on reverb but after looking closer at one of the pictures I noticed it had a paper label that said D-15 (no m) . Happy to see all of the positive comments about that guitar. Thanks for the video.
I once did exactly the same, I contacted Martin with the serial number who told me that it was actually Sapele a member of the mahogany family, it was one of the best guitars I ever had and I sold it due to me emigrating and didn’t want to put the guitar through that. A few days ago I bought the D15 street master and it’s pretty good, not yet on a par with my original as that was more broken in, though I’m looking forward to putting a new set of strings on it and I’m going from the 10’s that are currently on to 11’s … looking forward to that 😁
Street master sounds cool. The D15 I mention above ended up getting lost in the mail. Took well over a month to get my money back from Reverb. Lesson learned. I ended up buying a new D-15M and my son loves it.
@@JamesGodish Yes they are really good guitars. I’m finding it difficult to put it down. Shocking that yours went missing but at least you ended up with the true mahogany 😁 The street master is nice, literally cannot wait to put new strings on moving up a gauge but the current strings are still pretty decent so I’ll wait 😁 happy picking my friend 👍
I liked the tone of the 1st guitar the most , followed by the 3rd... I thought I was gonna prefer the tone of the original D17, but it came in last....thnxs for another cool video Jeremy, I really enjoyed it👍
I have a D15M Streetmaster that sounds amazing! I ordered it from C and M Music in Lafayette, La because I couldn’t find one locally last spring because of the pandemic. @@JeremySheppard You know, I got to play a D-15 from the year I was born today, gotta say that I actually think the new ones sound and play much better than the old ones in my subjective opinion.
I agree 1,3, 2, but the differences are subtle to me. Possibly the use of synthetic nuts and saddles plays in as well as the spruce top. Good value for an intermediate instrument.
I knew the D17 was #2 right off the bat. I wasn't sure about #1 and #3 at first as both have a brighter sound than the D17. At some point when you let a strummed chord ring out a bit, that familiar resonance of the D17m cut thru me as it does. I don't know what it is about that guitar. Pretty much the same as a D18 with spruce top and Mahogany back and sides, but even over RUclips vids, there's something about that the natural frequency of that thing just makes my internals resonate. For whatever reason, I never got that same vibe from the D18, not that it doesn't sound great too.
Hell yeah, i came just to listen to the D15M and get to hear some Isbell out of the blue; sounds great, thanks. "If We Were Vampires" by Jason Isbell for those who don't know; at 3:36 one of the best lyrical singer-songwriters alive right now, no doubt.
Thanks, Daniel! It makes it so much easier to really spot differences. The insane part of this is that I didn't use a click track and I recorded these over about a 30-minute stretch. It's kind of crazy how close the tempo is between them.
I'm glad to see that most people seemed to like the D-15 the best. I'm not going to comment since I was listening on my laptop and the speakers aren't good enough for a fair critique. Also, I picked up a used 2000 DC-15E (cutaway version with onboard electronics) about 10 years ago in good shape for $300, so I'm probably biased towards the D-15. Although I prefer a spruce/rosewood body guitar, the mahogany top, back, and sides does have a warmth that works well for some songs. I don't think it's a good/better/best situation, they're all good and it just comes down to personal preference.
I have a D 16GT. Gloss Sitka Spruce top, satin Mahogany back and sides. It is a monster! I took guitar lessons in a class with 12 other students and it cut through them all. It is a love at first sight and sound guitar. A friend for a lifetime!
Would suggest that letting the guitars show their relative volume is a good thing for those of us who play acoustically with other folks. I happened to pick up a D17 by accident; I thought it was a D17m but the seller was mistaken. Not sure if I'll keep it or not as I have 30 days to decide. Thanks for the video.
I liked the D15 the best by far... As far as second and third, different things I liked about each depending on what you were playing.. but I liked the D15 best in everything you did.. I own one so it fit my era and I could tell which one it was, even when I closed my eyes and did not watch what was on the screen.
Bought the D 15M before I watched your shoot out, for me the D15 was the best, D17 next and then the D17M, all had a great sound but for me the D15 was the best sound glad i bought it now, thanks for your video.
Liked #2 the early 2000 D17. I have one and they just sound richer to my ears. There aren’t many around . Martin HQ sent me this info on them: “ Good Afternoon, Thank you for contacting Martin. In 2001 we made a total of 151 D-17’s. We made this model from 2001 thru 2005 and a total of 1,115 made. The price list in 2001 was $1,650. Here are the specs below. Enjoy Best regards, Paula Primrose”
I got it really wrong. I picked 1: D17M, 2: D15, 3: D17. The overvtones the D15 had were far more complex, so my biases figured that it was the s price top. The D17 was the most muted of the three, with far more fundamental and the fewest amount of overtones. So I presumed it was the matte finish D15. The D17M was definitely the middle ground, sonically speaking. If I had to pick, it would definitely be the OG D-15, for clarity, focus, and best top end.
Last week, with pain in my heart I traded my first Martin DM from 1996 (laminated back and sides) for a 2013 Martin D17SM (both have an A-frame bracing under the top). This D17SM for sure is an amazing good sounding dreadnought. Though I like the warmth of a mahogany top, I prefer the spruce top for the more bright tones. Buth all the three are very good guitars. Thank you Jeremy for this video.
Cool. Were the strings all exactly the same kind, the same size gauge, and tuned the same? It’s like getting 2 A*’s and an A in school. All nice guitars.
#1 gave me that mellow mahogany sound. #2 sounded brighter and less like I think of a mahogany top sounding. #3 sounded pretty similar to #2 in my cheap headphones - perhaps a little less bright than #2.
I have dc15me from 2004 that seems to have a couple of things different than your 15 besides cutaway and lr bags pick up. I find it strums great but I don’t usually like to finger pick with it. Great for Johnny Cash. Loved the reviews very helpful and I am glad I have one just happy to have others as well.
I bought a D15, in 2004, and still play it, regularly (Though, I've been getting some rattle out of it, lately...). I first thought the D15 was Number 2. Then you strummed them toward the end, and I immediately heard the D15, as one. I liked the D17M second, and the original D17 third. But Iguessed them incorrectly! Thanks for the videos!
Got a question for you cause I just got a D-15 a few months ago. Have you noticed the guitar open up in the years youve had it? If so how noticeable is it and when did you notice?
@@pecosnick45 That's Kind of a tough question, for me... I would say yes, the tone has opened up, and gotten sweeter. My ear was probably not as good, when I bought it, in 2004. As for when I noticed, I'm not sure I have an answer. My guess would be a year, or greater. I have a spruce top Martin GPCPA4, that seems to have "opened up", more than the mahogany. But the D15 is still my first love. Hope that helps
Guess #1 correctly, mixed up 2 and 3. I thought for sure the brighter tone on number 2 was spruce. I own a 2010 ooo15M and I could hear similarities to the original D15. Tough call but I think #2 was my favorite based on your recordings, #1 was a close 2nd for me though...really depends on the song/chords.
I was dead wrong, I would have never guessed 3 was a Sitka top, I heard more deep low end than I would expected. Guitar two seemed to have the full package of nice low end complimented with some nice bright highs. Great video
One & two sounded very similar to me. Three was different, and I liked it least. However, I would like to know the age of all 3, and what strings were on each. In my experience satin finish guitars open up sooner than gloss. Therefore, on a new guitar, or a kind of recently made guitar, I would always take satin over gloss. My wife has a slot head 12 fret 15 series guitar from way back when, and I have a 15 series 12 string. That's right a 12 string They haven't made a 15 series 12 string in many years. They are both satin, of course, and sound excellent.
So, I keep coming back to this video because that D15m sounds so good and I have noticed that it appears to have different bridge pins than the other two (white plastic, bone, or Tusq), while the other two look like ebony, maybe? Can you confirm? My D15 Street Master has ebony and I feel they may add too much additional warmth to an already warm top.
I personally loved #1 (the OG), I loved the detail it had with the top end. Question though, so I'm about to be in the market for a new acoustic, which would be used not just for personal but recording as well. I personally love bright and open sounds that are full (I know the first instinct is to go TAYLOR!! but that's a little too brittle / bright sounding as I want body and warmth as well). I've gone out and tried Martins, and I still have the exact same problem I've had with them all my life whenever I've tried them. Something about the way they're made makes them incredibly difficult for me to play. For a lack of a better way of describing it, the finger board always feels sticky... and cumbersome... like I'm fighting the guitar to get my fingering right or glide across the fret board (and this is also on Martin's with new strings). Every Martin gives me this vibe, which makes me wonder if this is actually a thing with Martins that some people experience? I don't get that with Taylor's, Breedlove's, or Yamaha's.... But I do also get this same issue with Takamine come to think of it.. But I figured I'd ask if you've ever experienced this with certain guitars? I've had the uber nice guitar in that I had a Breedlove Northwest Classic from 2007 ish, but I sold it a while ago, so I'm not really wanting to get into that kind of money again. Current favorite is a Breedlove Organic series, the Artista I think? The playability was great, and the sound seemed to have all of what I'm after. I've also heard a Yamaha LL16 would be a good choice? But can't find any in stock to try. I would LOVE to try a Guild, but those are also hard to find in stock. Anyways. Great video and channel!! :)
Do you know what neck profile the Martin guitars had? Martin guitars have 12 different neck shape/profiles. I've experienced what you describe with classic (bat), v, and oval (D) neck profiles. I like the (asymmetrical) neck profile on the Martin Modern Deluxe line. I also like the Martin modified low oval profile neck, and won't get a Martin without it. The other issue is if the neck is gloss or satin. Hope this helps and you find the neck profile you like and play easily. As for a guitar that's bright and full, I'd suggest a Martin 0000-18 or 000-18 VTS with the new profile above. I also like the 000-28e Modern Deluxe to sing with (tenor).
A lot of people love the 15 series because the mellowness means you have to do less EQing post recording but since you said you like bright I wouldn't go there. I own a 000-15m that I love, but I like that it has that mellower sound that all mahogany is known for.
@@texhaines9957 Unfortunately I don't, I was just trying different Martins from varying price points (like... $500ish to $3000ish). That's great information to know about the neck profiles, I'll get out and try some more and keep an eye for what neck profiles they have! :)
I'm always amazed that the original D17 (the full mahogany) isn't closer in sound to the D15. For me the D15 wins every time. The spruce top D17 is a curious development and a strange one considering the popularity of all mahogany guitars. I recently purchased and then sold a Martin DSS-17 (what are your thoughts Jeremy). It was a nice guitar but seemed more comparible to a Gibson. Again spruce top. I never really got on with it so ended up selling. It was a very good looking guitar though.
1-was my favorite. It had the best high string sounds. 3-was my second favorite. Had the best projection to my ear. 2-was my third favorite. Sounded a bit dull compared to the others
Got it right straight away. Nice video. I own a battered 1999 D15 which sounds amazing. Is there any evidence for Martin using ‘older’ woods on the D15 before 2000?
I agree with Tin Man. The original D-15 sounded better to me. I was listening to the playback through a nice audio system. The sound was richer and more full. The highs sounded cleaner and it was just an overall better tone.
Great video as always! I got it right but I have experience with a couple of those models ;-) I watch on a PC with Bluetooth out to a Positive Grid Spark. I could absolutely hear the differences. The D-15 had a boom to the bass string. The D-17 had tonal similarities to the D-15 but sounded more balanced. IMO, the D-17M was more D-18 like. You could hear the crispness and tone of the spruce top.
actually you can see which guitar is which when you look closely. however i actually liked the 17M the most i am a spruce top guy i'm sorry ;) but Jeremy thanks as always for the video, yours max
Guitar 1 - D17M - it just sounded newer. Guitar 2 and 3 sounded very similar to each other, I will go with Guitar2 as the D-15 and Guitar 3 as the D-17.
I love Martin, I only own one, a GPC28E. I do like the sound of the mahogany ones as well. However if I ever get one more it’ll most probably be one of the 000’s 🤙
I really liked the 1st one myself it is warm, The second one sounded really good only sometimes I think and I think I liked the 3rd alot too but sounded to pretty though
Guitar 3 is/was like a D-18 so maybe that's the spruce top D-17m. Guitar 1 sounded older maybe D-17? Were the same strings on each Guitar? Just tells me that a D-18 or 000-18 may be better than what Martin has now
I have a D15 and I love love love it 🤗❤️ it needs work but is still amazing, I will never get rid of it...I wish I could actually get another lolz - Miss Anna
@@JeremySheppard Love the content! keep it up :) That real "D-17" the second one is my favorite of the the 3, but I would probably have more use for the D-15.
@@RogerThat902 Thanks! Yeah that's a great point! :)
Well, I got them all! D-15 or original D-17. I’d be very happy with either
The highs
sounded cleaner and it was just an overall better tone.
1 and 3 my fav. Glad i have a D15M
Great video as always! I got it right but I have experience with a couple of those models ;-)
I watch on a PC with Bluetooth out to a Positive Grid Spark. I could absolutely hear the differences. The D-15 had a boom to the bass string. The D-17 had tonal similarities to the D-15 but sounded more balanced. IMO, the D-17M was more D-18 like. You could hear the crispness and tone of the spruce top.
My guesses were all over the place and I own a ooo-15 and a D18 retro lol awesome video though I watch them all! God is good
actually you can see which guitar is which when you look closely. however i actually liked the 17M the most i am a spruce top guy i'm sorry ;) but Jeremy thanks as always for the video, yours max
Number 1 is beautiful, number 2 very nice, number 3 a little flat to me. Thanks for the review.
What strings you using on that d15, sounds great!
I thought the first one was the D17m
Guitar 1 - D17M - it just sounded newer. Guitar 2 and 3 sounded very similar to each other, I will go with Guitar2 as the D-15 and Guitar 3 as the D-17.
All wrong, but at least the 2 that sounded like each other were the D17 models, and the newer sounding one (to me) was the "cheaper" option of the 3.
Great video. Hey I was wondering I play in d standard so a whole step down would the d 15 be a good choice for that tuning thanks and God bless
It would sound wonderful! I play in DADGAD and mahogany guitars come to life in lower tunings
You should do this again, but add the D-15S to the mix.
That would be excellent! I use whichever guitars I have around and all of these are gone now.
The D15M is the most underrated guitar in the world!
I love Martin, I only own one, a GPC28E. I do like the sound of the mahogany ones as well. However if I ever get one more it’ll most probably be one of the 000’s 🤙
Speaking of high quality all mahogany Martins - Martin D15S is like a D15 with extra warmth!
Congratulations! It's an amazing comparison. To me, D15M is better.
I like 2 best, then 1 next and 3 last.
My D15m ..The best guitar I've used 👌👌🌝
If only we were vampires. Thanks for playing in drop d by the way.
I really liked the 1st one myself it is warm, The second one sounded really good only sometimes I think and I think I liked the 3rd alot too but sounded to pretty though
Isn't a spruce top mahogany body guitar a D-18? Anyway, I liked it best.
Guitar 3 is/was like a D-18 so maybe that's the spruce top D-17m. Guitar 1 sounded older maybe D-17? Were the same strings on each Guitar? Just tells me that a D-18 or 000-18 may be better than what Martin has now
All had the same strings. Dadarrio EXP16's
I have a D15 and I love love love it 🤗❤️ it needs work but is still amazing, I will never get rid of it...I wish I could actually get another lolz - Miss Anna
#2 D-17.... hands down and very hard to find these days.
I'll take Esteban for the win! Is that last riff the Guitar Hunter theme song?
Thanks
I correctly identified the Spruce top guitar
Number 1 was the very best👍🏻 then nr.3,and at last nr.2😉
I liked number 1 D15M best. The bass was more pronounced to me. The spruce top was my least favorite.
Very strange! I play a 1992 d15 and for some reason I thought it was #3
Guitar 1 is my choice sounds more warmer
I'll take one of each ....please. they are all beautiful!
Yeah got it right!!! :) Love em all!!!
Impressive!
@@JeremySheppard Love the content! keep it up :) That real "D-17" the second one is my favorite of the the 3, but I would probably have more use for the D-15. My acoustic line-up consists of a 2007 D35, 2016 J45 Standard and a Taylor GS-Mini Walnut e. Something like a 000-15M would be sweet to add. Cheer!!!!
It was fairly apparent. The real D-17 sang right through.
#1 spruce the new 17 #2 sounds like the older d 17 and #3 the d 15
I liked #1 best
D-15m "fills the room" if ya know what i mean
Wow missed that one lol and I own a D 15
Esteban!!!! 🎸🎸🎸
I love mahogany. I have a D-18
1,3,2
It’s 10 of 4
1-3-2
I own a D15, and I've never played an acoustic guitar I like better... I love the rich. warm tone....
I know I'm late to the party but which strings do you use on your d15? Thanks
D15 m....4 sale !
6 yrs old..
D15m is my choice.
D17M takes it by a mile
2-3-1
One and three simular. Two a little dull.
i am selling my d17 soon if anyone is interested UK based
The D17M was not as rich sounding.
I don't like the sound of any of them. I'm sure my Orangewood Hudson sounds better than all those put together.
