People used to rave about Charlotte Church but I always said to them "just listen don't look, you won't be so impressed" time has proved me correct there. Hopefully Jackie will do better and bring us joy for decades too come.
Sumi Jo said in a Korean interview that she wants to make Koreans be familiar with classical music and be fond of it because Koreans tend to prefer pop songs. I think this was one of her attempts to bring that out and make a connection with the Korean audience. Please don't bash her for trying that.
The whole world has been corrupted by so called "pop" culture. Korean Classical arts are far outstripping Western art, beyond any doubt. Even K-dramas on TV are far better than anything coming out of Hollywood. compare Mr. Sunshine or Autumn's Concerto to any Hollywood series. You Will see. Kudos to Sumi, and all the other truly talented Korean artists deing such great work. Just one American's opinion...
@@duyminh5219 True, very true. Not everything coming out of America is horrible. A lot of it is due to the American preferred format. Fifty minutes can't develop plot lines and characters. Story details are totally absent. Wiki defines vignettes as ... "more focused on vivid imagery and meaning rather than plot. Vignettes can be stand-alone, but they are more commonly part of a larger narrative." American TV series are almost all vivid imagery without much meaning or plot. But the Industry made that choice! Yes, her operatic pieces showcase her voice much better, and I definitely prefer her opera. BUt the vocal control she learned as an opera singer allows her to sing this song with effortless feeling and beauty.
@rmcinuk We can all enjoy all types of music. Although I find hardcore classical fans arrogant most of the time. I thought you're one of them. I like Sumi when she sings operatic arias. Sumi Jo is the operatic voice of the movie daughter of Kate Winslet in the recent HBO miniseries "Mildred Pierce". Mildred's spoiled/evil daughter, Veda, is a classical pianist who becomes a famous coloratura soprano whose exquisite operatic arias are dubbed in the movie by real-life international soprano, Ms. Sumi Jo.
Ah, did you hear the Ave Maria which she sang just after her father died? Its sublime. I do agree she sounds better in operatic pieces and classical songs, and certainly her vocal talent is much better displayed in that type of music. cheers

@dnmurphy48 I do not think Sumi's voice is suited for this song, although the lighter orchestra suits her voice. Céline never re-recorded the song and what some other people don't know is that she never re-recorded it. Live it's different because you've been singing all night and it's not usually the song that she finishes shows on. So I don't think you can class in as shouting.

I can also call Sumi's singing as squealing you know. But I won't. Each singer has their strengths and weaknesses. Sumi cannot belt, but she can sing in head with great control. Don't be blind. Sumi would do And I Am Telling You and you'd probably think it's still great when it's not, lol. Blind fan :)
it is so strange but when I watch the credits of the Johnny Depp movie, Ninth Gate, I get goosebumps hearing that soprano doing Vocalise... and voila, it was Sumi Jo singing the aria! Go figure! LOL!
@dnmurphy48 Céline in no way shouts the song. Céline has had classical training on her voice and had done a little bit of opera here and there, on certain songs ie La Diva on her French album D'Elles. Sumi does have an incredible voice, but you miss the fact that there are many ways to sing a song. I would think that Céline would know the difference between shouting and signing, as many of her fans would. She's done it since she was little.
@chonaV I think you are confused, many people think shouting more or less in tune is singing! Sumi Jo has interpreted this in her own unique way and has made a superb job of SINGING something that requires skill far below her level. I too prefer her singing work that allows her to show her unrivalled perfection but I will joyfully listen to this, the best version I have heard, in fact the only version by a true singer!
Both Sumi Jo and Brightman are classically trained and established. The music genres are different and require separate interpretation of the music and use of thier respective tools. Both ladies are gifted in the classical arena.
She is one of the few opera singers who can sing pop if she chooses. This sounds 'restrained' because celine shouts the song and a great many people equate loudness with emotion. I would rather listen to this than celine. But I would rather listen to her singing classical.
What is up with you people? This is legit pop singing. I am a classical singer, and the big climax is NOT straight up head voice. That is belting. It is not as big-screamish as most pop singers because Sumi is a light-leggiero coloratura instrument. But it is spread, and it is belting. She does then go into a head voice ending resolution to add a personal touch. She's an artist. Sue her. So she doesn't sound exactly like your favorite Celine Dion. She's not Celine, and she's not trying to be.
She blew the "near...far" part. The heart of the song. Couldn't listen to another word after that. Celine, in the Titanic recording, is the only one who ever got it right. And so far, the only performance of this song I can stand.
Felt like she could have picked a high key to sing. As is, it felt like someone put a rev limiter on a Ferrari, so the engine could only rev to 3000 rpm.
I was thinking the same thing, haha. I was like...she's pronouncing it correctly, but it sounds bizarre to this song if you compare it to Celine's pronunciation.
I would say she is still too young too be assured of an outstanding adult voice, however I believe in a positive outlook. I bow to your greater interest/knowledge regarding Jackie and fully hope you are correct :)
