I like the the natural pixie in her natural state. You should not feel that you need to point out that you are not wearing makeup. As if you are any less beautiful without makeup. We love you for who you are just how you are inside and out. We love the fact that you relish us in great knowledge and wisdom. If someone does not, then they do not deserve needing an acknowledgement.

I switched to Unity from KDE for that exact reason. Now that may sound a bit weird, but the reason why I say that is because KDE just feels like a steam-powered locomotive under the hood, whereas Unity is *much* faster (and actually, Gnome even more). IMO of course.

Instead of using 'cat /etc/passwd' or 'cat /etc/group' I'd recommend to use 'getent passwd' ('getent group) which also works in case you have an alternative login-mechanism set up such as e.g. ldap.

Been playing with NAS4Free. While the initial setup is a bit more than 5 minutes, the end result is better than 'buntu file sharing. Having file systems that play nice, but are different is (supposedly) also a good idea from a security viewpoin. Runs smoothly on a 4 year old ATOM 330/ION box, which is more than 'buntu ever did. ;)
There's OpenMediaVault which is built on Debian for those who need Linux.

I finally got a small server(folder share) working between xbuntu and win7. I had to view other youtube tutorials to understand how to get it up and running. the problem i was having other than trying to get it set up by pausing your video( on my desktop) and typing what you type on my laptop, was that i was busy fantasying.(lol)
but seriously youtube videos don't pause when you need them to if the video is fast.. slow down.. it's a video.. take a few minutes to explain what you are doing and let the people your trying to help follow along. Hell, it's not you're in a race to teach. you don't have to beat the other guy(s), in speed, just in knowledge.

Instead of setting a random password on the account you may want to do a sudo passwd -l sambaguest
This locks the account via setting it to an invalid string that can never be matched. This is also good for setting up accounts that you can ssh into with key auth and not a password.

You can just install ssh server and avahi daemon and setup ssh keys and your whole file system will exposed in network section of file manager locked by your login password or by ssh key.
Also ftps/ftp and webdav is nice ways to share things especialy if you have one dedicated file server in network.
All this solutions much more stable then samba. Ftp is supported by almost all platforms. I can access my ftp shared files even with J2ME cell phone.

Nixie, I would love to see you start doing more enterprise grade videos. I think you could seriously expand your audience base. Not that you need to, but I think the benefit would be all ours. You're excellent at what you do and I'd like to see more people realize that. Humor me.... (just for fun), do a video on Chef (Opscode) and see what kind of response you get. Plus, it's some great new stuff that's maturing at an exponential rate.

Well, it's 2018 now, and I had to stop as soon as I heard "Samba." It seems Samba is now called smbd and has changed.
Couldn't find either pkg by searching for software. It appears smbd is pre-installed, but... I couldn't get it to even start. It says "failed due to error messages..." tinkered for hours, based on forums saying to uninstall, reinstall, restart, reconfigure etc. Still won't run.
This crap is too hard on Linux. In OSX you just click a few things and voila! Network! In Linux, it seems there are always some bugs or changes in the newer versions that interfere with installing or running things.
Forums include "fixes" that don't work because of a missing or extra "-", newer versions with different commands, etc.
The price of freedom perhaps, but it might be too high for me. I'm considering going back to OSX.
Sad, but "I'm too old for this shit." Time is too precious to waste on things that don't work.

Unity and Gnome are DEs for the average person while KDE is not. Therefore, Unity and Gnome seem more limited. I'm an advanced user and I love Unity because it's really fast (except in 12.10; I'm still on 12.04) and it's more productive once you learn to use the lenses and other features (just remove the amazon lens and it's perfect)

After creating the sambaguest user I am able to view the account in terminal and see that it is a member of the sambashare group. But when I realized I have forgotten to set the shell as /bin/false I tried to go back into Users and Groups to make the change and the account no longer appears. I am brand new to Linux so I'm sure I'm missing something basic. I'm currently running Ubuntu server 18.04 with Mate gui. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I realize this video is quite dated but as many of your other respondents have noted, it is very well done and quite simple to follow.

Nevermind - figured it out . After setting the ID to less than 1000 the account no longer shows up in the GUI user settings program. After using the command "sudo usermod -u [UID] sambaguest" to reset the User ID above 1000 I was able to see the account again.

This worked great for months until I upgraded to 14.04. Now when I try to access the server from a different computer, it says "Invalid Username or Password. Please Try Again." Tried backtracking through each of the setting and there were one or two things that had changed i.e. the group that the Folder belonged to reverted back to the user rather than Sambashare however, I still can't figure out what's wrong after changing everything I can find back to the way it was.

Hmmm... After doing that, I am still getting permission issues when attempting to create a folder (reading a file was fine). Permissions look all fine except in the Change Permissions for Enclosed Files window. For some reason it refuses to accept any changes and will ignore any I attempt to make.
Using 13.10 and my folder I wish to host is in my home directory. Anyone have a clue what might be happening and how I can fix it?
