This is really great. People are scared of torsens due to them not working when one wheel has zero traction, but with skilled braking, you have shown that people can really make them work well.
Better yet if you have aggressive traction control like a Land Rover and it grabs only the spinning wheel immediately then it's even better because it will torque bias that gripping on the spinning wheel instead of pushing the brakes on all the wheels and then you're fighting brake Force plus gripping
Second vid I've seen of yours and it is outstanding. Just when I was thinking of installing a TrueTrac in lieu of a selectable locker... Thanks for your content!
Oh man, how I miss St. George. As soon as I seen that ram on 40s and that red dirt I knew. I miss living there. SLC isn’t the same, doesn’t even hold a candle. I used to go on those same little trails in my old 92 Toyota pickup
It looks like you have bucket seats. How did you replace the bench with bucket seats? I've been trying to replace mine, but can't find bucket seats for less than $1000 anywhere.
Swap in a rear axle housing from a third gen Tacoma with elocker. Strong and not as many issues as air lockers and then sell your current third, typically can't get as much for a whole housing since they are a pain to ship to people. Be worth more to separate if you do go third gen Tacoma route.
I just bought a 2014 base 4x4. It’s completely stock and in good shape with the exception of high mileage. I figure I can have fun with this truck while my Jeep is in the shop.
Planning on putting a truetrac on 3rd gen TRD off road since I don’t see myself ever using the e locker. Not to mention being able to do actual burnouts is always a plus especially with the manual 6 speed.
If you have traction control it really really works well with it. I have it on my own Land Rover and I think the Toyota a track is pretty similar to the Old Land Rover type. Maybe less aggressive but still if it grips just the spinning wheel it helps even more cuz then you don't have to tap the brakes and apply it brake Force to all the wheels which is kind of counterproductive
Thats the same set up I've been thinking about for my old Ram 1500 (1998). The torsen is available for the Dana 44 in the front but not for the Chrysler 9.25. I think the actual torsens lock up a bit better than the trutrac. I was debating doing a selectable locker in the front but I'm nervous about all the maintenance and this will not be a rock crawler, more of an aggressive overland.
If you tap the brake or pull the parking brake on open diffs, it will also act as a pseudo locker. The locker obsession is a function of the loss of skill in the ‘sport’. Most off-roaders don’t need lockers - they need to learn how to use their brakes in a pinch. Also, you’re sitting on a little legend with this truck. It’s the last Tacoma that’s similar to earlier trucks that were off-road centered, rather than mall and street centered. The 109” wheelbase is the only wheelbase in the Tacoma line that matches Jeep LJs and XJs. It’s a huge sleeper.
My dad used to do that with his open diff Mazda (Ranger) for years in winter weather. He was a postal worker and always had to respond, only couldn’t get to work once.
Awesome truck man! Glad to see you posting again! Building a 2014 clone of yours. I know on the front you had Bilstein 5100’s, are you using the stock springs or aftermarket springs? Sorry if you’ve already covered this in other videos. I must’ve missed it.
Thanks, yeah stock springs, I’m considering dropping the the 5100s from the top position to the middle. I don’t feel like I need the height and would like it to soften up a little.
Have you had any issues with grinding noise/vibrations when letting off the gas pedal? I believe it has to do with the drive shaft. My reg cab just started doing this in 4th/ 5th gear mostly.
Yes, I added grease at all the fittings, it helped but didn’t fix it. I recently put a dual transfer case in so I needed a shorter rear drive shaft. I put in a double cardon shaft, it fixed the vibration. I also shimmed the rear axel will a 5 degree shim. I would first research drive shaft angles to see how much of a shim you need, if that doesn’t fix it then a double cardon shaft probably will.
@@predictionpain2632 that all makes sense and lines up with everything people had mentioned on the forums. Where did you wind up getting the new drive shaft?
Awesome truck. I want to do the same with my 14 Regular Cab. Can you possibly do a review of its street manners with the front Torsen? Did you delete the ADD?
In two wheel drive the Torsen is completely undetectable. The true trac in the rear will chirp if you gun it around a corner. In four wheel drive the steering stiffness up because of the Torsen, I like how it feels though. No complaints on the street at all.
Hey man love your content, I just wanted to ask for dutchies if it’s okay to get a puppy ? I have a 2 yr old Dalmatian and would love to add a puppy to the pack I’m an athletic young guy and I think I can handle it but would love various opinions on it my dog is trained well.
Things were a lot easier with one dog. Adding another dog will take a toll on your wallet, patience and house. Also, It may stress out the dog you already have. That being said if you have the time, energy and resources, it may be a great fit. Socialize the puppy a lot, and take it to obedience school, also get an e collar to train it.
How has the handling with the front torsen been? Do you ever notice any sketchy handling characteristics or tendency for the wheels to pull while in 4hi/4lo ? I’m debating between a front torsen or front locker for my 4Runner.
Glad to see you back after a long time. I lobe your truck. I have the same exact truck. I noticed you got a new rear bumper where can i find one like it. It looks sick! Are you going to replace the front bumper too?
I appreciate that, I made the rear bumper out of some square tube. I filmed most of the process and might put a video out about it. I will do something to the front eventually, I haven’t damaged the stock one up too bad yet, I’ll probably make one if I do anything.
I have driven in the snow with the trutrac and MTs, it felt fine but I took it easy. I wouldn’t worry about it especially if you have decent snow tires, it does donuts like no other.
Yep. Very confusing video. It paints a picture that the Torsen he has is more capable than the Truetrac. I wonder if he maybe has a Track-loc instead??? Those do kinda suck.
Yeah they are both mechanical limited slip, I’m not sure what brand the front is, that’s why I called it a Torsen. I favored the front because it locked when adding brake pressure, I couldn’t get the rear to lock using that method.
@Predictionpain I wondering it's a drum brake issue (way more brake goes to the front, so it's hard to get resistance to the rear wheel without putting up road blocks to the front wheels? That sucks though. I've always had no problem with my truetracs in front and rear.

I've been wondering about your channel recently, so glad to see you're uploading again. Can't wait for dog content!
I appreciate that! Will post dog content soon👍
Regular cab trucks are bad ass! I got a 2022 trd off-road in access cab. I’ve had a few Ford pickups with the regular cab.
Great videos
Great explainer and demonstration! Thank you for mentioning my shop... Glad you are enjoying your rig!
Absolutely! I appreciate your help and look forward to working with you in the future.

Yeah it’s better down here lol
Sick, Love the singlecab
Love the setup!
Hi, great video! What does your rpm sit at 70 mph with your set up?

Will the trutrac work better with new vehicles that have brake lock differential traction control?
I just bought a 2014 base 4x4. It’s completely stock and in good shape with the exception of high mileage. I figure I can have fun with this truck while my Jeep is in the shop.
Your vid of the puzza cutter 255s helped convince me to get 33s...now youre gonna make me spend thousands more for a regear lol

So in fact both diffs are TorSen type diff's now.

Pros a cons my friend… both are better than nothing, you can change it later on if you want, it’s only money 😂

I love trucks and malinos
Where's the dogs ? Good to see you back 👍
They’re still going strong, I plan to make some videos with them this year. Thanks for the comment brother!
@@predictionpain2632 awesome look forward to it 👍
Where did you get your torsen for the front differential?
Thanks for this
👍
keep up the toyota content
Is the Detroit truetrac differential a helical torsen differential?
It’s a different setup with gears, but they function similarly. I don’t think you could tell a difference between the two when driving.
What brand steel rims are those?

Thanks for sharing. Did you get any gear whine/howl after installing those 4.88s?
Yeah I noticed a very small wine, it went away after a few days.

In 4wd the steering is more firm but I really like the way it feels. I’m happy with it.

Nice truck. Do you still have it? And where did you get your rear bumper? I've bin looking for something like that.
He welded it up himself.
How do those 255/85/16 work on that red sand/dunes?
They are definitely not the tire or size of choice for sand. But I never got stuck, the truck is relatively light it’s not a problem.
Do you know what the largest size that fits in the spare tire location?
You can stuff a 33 that’s max though
is it possible to share the front lsd part numer? the axle does it have 30 Spline ?
No reply after 5 months?!
Please where did you purchase and part number!
where'd you get the front Torsen?

Please make a video on it. I want to do the same bumper for my 2nd gen 4runner. Looks simplistic and functional with tons of clearance
Is there a difference in Torsten and true trac
They are both helical type LSDs.
I have a 2nd gen 4 banger std cab 4x4. I can barely do 80 with stock gears at sea level! If my speedo is off at 80, I'd never know. LOL!
Is that a custom rear bumper.
Yeah a little driveway DIY project
You could have bought a Eaton E-Locker. They are reliable. And id run 4:88’s with 33” tires.
This is one of the best reviews of a truetrac that I have found. Thanks. Have you driven in the snow with the front trutrac ? Any comments on that?

Why get such ridiculous gearing for that small of tire? It's like hey what's the most ridiculous I can get
Could have gone lower, I might in the future 👍
