Finally! I knew you would love it. This was the book that introduced me to RPG Lit I originally picked it up way back as an audio book to help me fall asleep, it was long, it was the nerdiest school of magic book I have ever encountered and I liked the narration. Corin is so quirky but relatable. He and Keras are my favorite characters. Fast forward, I have since read through Arcane Ascension book 3, then I skipped to Six Sacred Swords (Weapons and Wielders) which is literally a story that is being told off screen during AA3. But that made think I really should read War of Broken Mirrors first before I go any further. Andrew's wordpress page has different suggested order options and I think I want to read in crossover order so I am currently on Forging Divinity. I am glad I started with the Arcane Ascension books though because I like only knowing as much as Corin knows and as he find things out. I highly recommend the audio, Nick Pohdel is amazing. With his narration, he has created very distinct voices for each character and it is consistent across books and series. He is my new favorite narrator but also now I can't read these books to fall asleep lol. Andrew Rowe is amazing, I hope he keeps writing and writing in this world, like Brandon Sanderson with the Cosmere universe.

From what I can see there are a bunch of new stories set in the world. There is so much to explore and I’m excited to do so

If only schools let you pick books you wanted to read instead of forcing specific ones. I thought I hated reading but no. I simply hated books that weren't meant for me(cuz let's face it most books you read in school are meant for adults, not 12 year olds). The first time I really read anything was when I caught up to the Mushoku Tensei anime and wanted to continue reading, read the manga caught up to it, and then I had a choice, do I wait years or read the web novel. I decided to read it. That was the most I have read and I realized I liked reading, so when I finished that I decided to start reading the Re: Zero web novel and quickly realized that I don't enjoy books written in 3rd person I much prefer it when written from the MC's pov.
Some extra background, I'm a software engineering student and currently working on a new algorithm that involves a lot of research, and I wanted a book/anime/movie anything that would scratch that itch of not just accepting that magic exists and we can use it but I wanted something where the story focuses on someone who is actively doing research into new types/uses for magic. I checked what people were recommending and decided to start reading Sufficiently Advanced Magic and I wasn't disappointed. Sure Corin may be just learning already existing magic, but whenever he looks at something and just thinks, wait, couldn't I do x/y to make that work? I enjoyed a character who doesn't just take the state of things as they are currently and accept them but tries to think of new ways to use the magic they already know.

I agree schools could definitely do a better job making reading more fun. I’m glad to hear you resonate with Corin! He is an awesome character

Oooh, it sounds good. Which is a good thing, because I backed the Kickstarter while knowing almost nothing about it. I'm trying to read more LitRPG, because of Dark Town. -Palmer

Honestly when it comes to Progression Fantasy books, from the ones I've read I'd have to say that my favourite is Lord of the Mysteries.
It's a chinese web series with some of the most intriguing and immersive world building that I've read in the genre & the power system itself is also quite interesting and fun.
It's planned to be a three book series with the second book currently being written & as such the series still holds a lot more potential to show us even more of the world that perhaps our limited perspective through the lens of the main character in the first book would be unable to show.
I'd recommend giving it a shot if you're not repelled by the first book's over 2 million word count & are in any way interesting in what I've described.

The MC in autistic AND ace?! Every time i i hear i talk about this book, you're selling it to me more.
I haven't read any progression fantasy though. Would you say it's a good starting point for the subgenre?

Thank you for this review Andrew! I’ve been on the fence about reading this one for years. I will probably still read it, but not sure it will click with me.

Just binged the books in Arcane Ascension. Sadly, they seem to peak at Book 2 for me at 4* max. 3 and 4 feel like fillers, and 4 has parts that are straight up sermons. Also every book has virtually the same plot beats, and by book 4 I stopped caring.
For example, we are expected to believe that 2 equally powered people nearly kill each other, but a 1,000,000x more powerful entity fails to do any serious damage to them, and they even beat it. Okay, maybe a sliver of damage, but still... With the amount of OP characters our protagonists have to fight, you start questioning the logic behind it all. And you get to hear sermons in the meantime.
But damn, the world is interesting...
I also like Corin, he obviously has ADHD, I wouldn't say he's asexual though, seems like he's had some traumatic experiences that have sheltered his sexuality (happens surprisingly often).
The one thing I never got though was his quest for his brother and wanting to reunite the family. Mainly of all the revelations in later books, but also because Corin basically takes all the time in the world. Somehow doesn't seem realistic.

Hmmm well I am reading the second book next month and I can def see how all that could be frustrating. I plan to keep reading the series for now but as always if it isnt working for me I will gladly move on. Thanks for your thoughts :)
