I love my Sideshow droids...however,for the money,this figure kind of bummed me out. I have $10 hasbro R2's that have more sounds built in. I'd eventually like to see a deluxe body (opening panels, etc) with an aluminum dome and sound.
I got my Sideshow one from Ebay for 160$ CAN last year. They start at about 190$ CAN these days. If I want the Hot Toys one I need to spend at least 325$ CAN to get one. The Hot Toys one really does look amazing but I wouldn't expect anything less especially if you compare the price. I can't justify 325$ to get a second R2 just because it look better.
For same amount, Buy Sphero R2D2 instead. It is wort only US$199.

Danoby! Oh man, loved that intro..!!! You put such great effort into your vids which I wish I could do in mine, but maybe someday. Never realized how much Vegas looked like Tatooine! Haha..! The garage door scene was the best and had me cracking up! Genius work! Just on point! Haha..! I miss my Tamashii C3-PO now. I sold him off before I moved overseas because he just didn't seem complete without an R2, but hopefully I can still find one at a good price later on. I didn't realize R2 came out already. Was holding out for a good one and Hot Toys seems to have made the one I was waiting for! Great review and comparison! Thanks for doing this! :)
Like I said in the video I have a fondness for the droids and and will most likely get the Tamashii Nations R2 that just went up on preorder. The Tamashii Nations C3PO is by far the best interpretation in 1/6 scale. Sideshows version couldn't come close. Thanks for watching!

I agree with you about the Tamashii 3-PO! That thing was a beauty and I even did a slight mod on mine for the eyes, but oh well... Like I said, hopefully I can still find another later on at a decent price now that there are 1/6 R2s out that will look nicely paired with him. For sure the Tamashii version will be a beauty too!

Tamashii R2 has rivets on his chest which is not visible on the screen. Otherwise it is near perfect.
Great review! Thank you! I'm late on the bandwagon to getting one of these. Mainly because I have so many R2s it's ridiculous. But this one just looked too nice to pass up so I finally got one.

I was deciding on this one and the Tamashii Nations and went with the Tam R2. I think it will supplement my Tam 3PO perfectly. Are you planning on picking this one up to? As always great video and loved the intro.

I wanted the hot toys version, but i got the sideshow version for 120 dollars, so i couldn't find a real reason to spend an extra 100 dollars. After watching your review, i wonder if i made a mistake.

not very often, plus i am displaying him with the tamashii nations c3po and my hot toys luke, with his hologram table out. I think it is fine for me.

Looks good. May have to pick one up. I have a the unpainted version by Sideshow and it's probably the worst quality 1/6 figure I own. I'm in need of an upgrade.
Thank you for a great informative video and review.The comparison is night and day, the Hot Toys version is far superior, better quality by far,better paint apps, no awful seem marks and aesthetically far, far more pleasing.I cant wait to receive mine next week😀

Dude your hands waving are so annoying I can't watch
Ok first off, I hope the "kicking the dog" thing was a joke because that's animal abuse. Second, those are holographic projectors, not eye pits... The big black circle in the middle of the front of R2's face is his eye. Third, if I wanted to pay $225 bucks for an R2, I would have gone for the Perfect Model R2-D2 over this. This just isn't worth the price. Don't give me wrong, it looks amazing and I love the look of it but I'm perfectly happy with my Sideshow Collectibles R2-D2 because you get what you pay for. Is it perfect? No. But the only reason why people give it the "it's cheap" crap is because people probably aren't trating it like they should. But that's just a guess. I mean I've had my SC R2 for almost 3 years now and I've never had any issues. Maybe I'm just a 1/12 scaled collector so I don't know, but it's just a good action figure scale fit for me. I mean I know we don't agree on everything and some of the stuff I see here is cringey to me, but this was a pretty good video! And I only watch your videos if it's something interesting, or it's about an all time favorite character, or it just has my attention where I ask myself the following on stuff such as the Phicen Suicide Squad Harley Quinn:

I know exactly how to treat my figures but i have never came across such a piece of cheap feeling tat as the Sideshow R2,i mean seem joins on the dome.....please!!! Yes it does come laden with a lot more features but honestly would i have my R2 dressed to kill on Jabbas Sail Barge........Nope!
Yes the Hot Toys version is more expensive but its the quality, attention to detail and over all look of the figure that your paying for.
IMO the Hot Toys version is far, far superior.
It really is a better looking figure. The attention to detail on the Hot Toys version is simply stellar. The The Perfect Model from Chogokin is a fantastic looking piece. but again, you get what you pay for. $300.00 bucks compared to Sideshow version retail @ 150.00. from what I understand the second hand preowns are going for 50-80 bucks on eBay.
Yeah i sold my Sideshow version on as soon as i seen the preorder for the Hot Toys version. So pleased i sold when i did as i got a good enough price for it which paid for nearly three quarters of the price of the Hot Toys version. Mine should arrive this week, happy days😀
Danoby2 well, I would have waited for the Perfect Model R2-D2 because you get a lot more diecast, lights and sounds, a Computer Interface Arm that folds out and extends from R2's right panel, a Fine Manipulator Arm in R2's left panel, his charging bay opens and his Spacecraft Linkage and Control arms (blue chest panels) open up. Plus, you get the Kenny Baker leg covers! If you think the Hot Toys R2 is better than the PM R2 then I'm sorry, but you're crazy. Lol! I mean we all have our personal preferences but this is not worth 225 bucks! I can name plenty of other things that's worth 225 bucks. If they wanted to make it 225 buck, they should have made an R2 that was based off of the Prequel or Original Trilogy R2-D2 or combine the two into one figure. But that's just me. I'm a bit nitpicky when it comes to certain R2 collectibles because R2-D2 is how I got into Star Wars and I can also be a bit biased. R2 is my all time favorite Star Wars character.
