A Day At The Shop With EricTheCarGuy

- I've had a long standing request to put a webcam in the shop so that viewers can see what goes on in my shop on a work day. I couldn't work that out, but I asked Cameraman Brian to follow me around for a day to document whatever he sees. I also told him he could edit the video. In short, I gave Brian creative license to follow me around in the shop for a day and create a video of what he saw. This is the video he came up with. I hope it satisfies the request for a shop day in the life of EricTheCarGuy.

I thought we might try something a little different this week. Don't worry, there's plenty of turning wrenches and getting dirty. ruclips.net/video/-vZf7qx_Q_k/видео.html
Although not a fan of the toilet cam, I can't fault you for trying Eric.
EricTheCarGuy I kinda like this type of videos, oh and Elvis was the best part. Stay dirty..
EricTheCarGuy All three cars look like their hoods don't fit right or are open. If they're open, because never closed up right, since it'll be worked on later, it's understandable. But if that's how they all look, I'll have to ask: Are there really so many badly fixed collision damages out there?
Edit: OK, the Nissan had a fitting hood. 2 out of three where 1 is a known collision damage, that sounds more reasonable (but still a lot).
EricTheCarGuy Another thing I notice: Why do you leave your shop doors closed while running car engines inside? Isn't that quite dangerous, even in such a big shop like the one you're in right now? Why not see if one of your generous suppliers of stuff can give you an exhaust vacuum system for the shop to install, review and keep? Just thinking abour your health there...
EricTheCarGuy I know that you have probably been doing this for years, but when you removed your gloves, you blew inside them to push all of the fingers back out. If you are using latex gloves, you are inhaling latex particles. Inhaling this increases your risk of developing a latex allergy. If you enjoy using latex gloves, I would suggest you stop doing that, because latex free gloves suck and they are really hard to use. Just a pointer, no criticism intended.
This was awesome Eric. Felt like I was watching a TV series. Would watch these all the time. We don't always need to watch detailed videos. It's nice to see "problems" come and the anticipation of the diagnoses keeps you drawn in. Thanks again and hope you do these more often. Maybe once a month or more.
Mmm, just love your morning.. Opening door, lightning up, let the keys fall on the desk, start workinng at 6:30. Just love your entreperneurship, greatings from Gotland, sweden :-)
Really liked the format of this one car guy!
RedneckRectum Yea, I guess I can fix things from time to time. :)
EricTheCarGuy I sense a little sass car guy:)
For sure its all good
RedneckRectum Absolutely. Some of the angles framed by parts of the lift or the hoods of cars was incredibly artistic.
Nice job Eric. I liked the different approach to your video this week. Fun to watch. Douglas
ERIC! ERIC! You left cameraman Brian in the shop!
supernom
thats where he live's.
supernom He also forgot to leave food and water out for him.
supernom Poor Brian :(
Guys, guys, guys......guys!!
Stop worrying, if you watch the video again Eric has a whole bunch of mountain dew in his office/kitchen which brains allowed to at least get one if he is thirsty and all the crumbs Eric leaves from his lunch aswell.
: /
Jerry Velasco You bring up a valid point. I am no longer worried about cameraman Brian.
Interesting to see what issues people bring in daily for repairs, thanks for sharing.
Eric in flat rate mode haha
bboyaddicted lol very true
kudos to all our hardworking auto mechanics that go through the trouble of properly diagnosing and fixing breakdowns. Great job Eric, I know exactly how it feels to feel "flat" at 32:55. Its hard not to get discouraged when a job doesn't get done, but just know that you do a great job, and your fans love you. Keep up the good work!
That was cool as hell.I would like to see this again sometime.
Dang, some times I feel like I want to do a road trip and drive all the way from California to your shop just to have you do a look-over of my own 00 Civic (with a Smog legal B18C5 engine). Been a long-time subscriber/follower of your videos and it always feels good to support small independent businesses like yourself. It's great to see you pull through both the good and the bad times and continue keeping your passion alive. Mad props and hope you continue to be successful in the many years to come.
What I like most about your videos is that you keep it real. You have helped me out a lot on my breaks thanks Eric keep up the good work and keeping it real
The OCD in me would have to replace both wheel bearings.
drink15 Getting ready to do the same in my Blazer
drink15 Its CDO........whew. Much better now.
mminc81 CDO?
DE Nichols
Patterns, patterns...
DE Nichols The letters are in alphabetical order now :)
Thanks...Always enjoy watching other professional mechanics...Been working in the automotive field for about 40 years and still learn things from other guys.
New wheel bearing AND rotors makes me smile. It's refreshing to look at.
A man that makes time to put his tools in their proper place at the end of a day is a craftsman. Come morning there is no searching for misplaced tools, good on you Eric. Thank you for the video.
Eric is a good guy, I just admire honest hard working people. Also love it when people share their knowledge to help others. God bless you sir.
I find time lapses of my day in the shop work well. I post up lapses of my work once a week or so. The last one was removing a dash on a Lincoln for a $20 sensor. Check it out on my channel it might be a neat thing to try I get a lot of views from them.
Amesie's Corner recommend watching this guy ^ Great videos
Awesome!!! A new show begins, Inside the workshop !!! Congrats Eric and Brian!!!
I had to rewind and double take at that wrench flip
Kyle T that was smokin
I know you Eric. Unwrapping the cartons for the new parts, like a child at christmas. Eager to get to work, solve problems and get the kick at the end. It's a special kind of feeling - Greetings from Sweden
Just a thought, but a really easy way to lightly restore headlights is with Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and a microfiber pad of some kind. 5 minutes of rubbing and there's a ton of new clarity.
Your vigor gives me nostalgia every time I see it. I had a Red one just like that and I miss it so much.
Must have been desperate if they made the trip from Oklahoma to Ohio in the summer in a car with no A/C.
And thank you, Brian, for bringing it all home. Editing can make or break the day.
Eric, I love this video! Also love the camera work! This is one of my favorite videos of yours.
You should include swearing and cursing Eric as when I'm in the shop and things are just a pain in the ass to do, I do alot of that lol
Lol me too......"fuck this shitbox" is my fave...
I hear yer man
Andrew Man I am glad he doesn't. I would unsubscribe if he were to do that.
Gabe Snode I like that he keeps his language good too. I was watching some tool reviews from RomanAutomotive that were unwatchable for this very reason. I needed the info. not the swearing. Unprofessional.
Got better chosen tools for less though.
Gabe Snode Big threat.
Eric, I really liked this video. I have to admit I felt a bit sorry for you over that A/C issue. What a pain! Keep up the great work.
I actually really liked this video! It kind of gave me a small taste of what working day to day as a technician would be like. Really enjoyed meeting you Eric! And thanks to Camera man Brian for telling me to look out for this video!
EricTheCarGuy you should definitely come out with some more videos like this. These videos are pretty interesting because you get to see and learn a little bit of everything that you fix that day in the video. Very interesting videos I think.
Eric , You really love what you do .
It shows .
you should get a wire tracker to see if the wires from the harness actually go to the source of the problem.. it tracks the wire usually by sending a tone through the wire and uses a secondary handheld device that beeps when you're near the wire...they're mostly used by telephone companies...the power probe might have a feature similar to this....wiring diagrams are a pain in the ass!
YesIReallyDoLikeZebras It's also sold by Harbor Freight Tools. (Shameless plug for the china crap tools.) Pretty cheap and a decent investment. And now back to our video....
YesIReallyDoLikeZebras Right. Briansmobile1 put up a great video about that.
DE Nichols
that's probably where I remember it from!
YesIReallyDoLikeZebras
Great minds remember alike.
How you solve these complex problems (at least to me) is amazing!
I have never seen you remove the old brake fluid before while compressing the brake caliper. That is a pretty cool trick thanks!
Eric, TY for this video, I know it's older but it put a lot into perspective for me. (My Grandfather was a mechanic, and taught me.) I've been through a lot of what you've shown...
video series. once a week. id be keen. ha
please do more of these videos it was awesome to watch. that is if you have time i love watching all the videos you post they are very good at helping out how to fix problems.
I loved watching a good mechanic work! Thanks for sharing!!!
Just wondering, what car cameraman Brian drives?
Daniele Dal Col The Toyota from the wheel bearing video.
EricTheCarGuy its what my brother did on Big Island, now he works solely on exotic cars. Ferrari Porsche Lamborghini Astin Martin BMW Audi. As I've watched over the years, its still just nuts and bolts. He told me once while doing valve seats for a Ferrari, "Man made it, Man can fix it." Thanks for your RUclips postings.
About time a Altima made its way to the shop. Wish you had filmed the front brake job, would be fun to watch you do a job I've done on my Altima.
AC work seems like one of the hardest things to do. I’ve had older cars where I have spent a few thousand dollars having a repair shop work on the AC but not completely fix it. It was an old car so I gave up. After watching you work on this, it should be the most expensive repair you did all day.
I thought this was great. Just like any other business you have a set of problems that you have to find solutions for. I think you nailed it.
youre great Eric, hi from Ecuador. (you should hire some help, at least to clean the shop, or prepare your vehicles, trust me it worths it). keep going. i have a motorcycle mechanic shop and always watch your videos. ;)
Just watched this 10 months late as it was on my birthday so missed out!
Really nice video. Lot's of education which was good.
I totally agree with your method of sorting out your tools after each job. I work in construction and have always done the same. The next job or the next day will go smoother.
Damn I wish you were my mechanic.
Car Guy, this is one of my favorite videos because of it's realism which is probably why I began watching your videos. I can relate to all of the frustrating events you go through. I look forward to observing how you approach and size up a job and try to relate that to my own experience. This is fun stuff. Keep up the good work!
Hello I am Faisal from Kuwait and wish you a happy life
7:03 That wrench twist was so slick
I did the same job on my father's old Nissan with the bearings. Living in Florida, we don't have the issue of rust locking on the bearing you had, unless you live right on the beach. I loosen the bolts and the bearing fell right off, in fact it started falling off before I could get the 4th bolt all the way off.
I notice you run the cars without the garage doors open that's not a good idea. I know these little rice boxes don't put out much emissions but still not good to breathe that in.
i noticed that too. maybe leave the door 2 feet open?
I thought the same thing. However, I came to the conclusion that there's most likely a ventilation system installed in his shop.
The sigh and hands on hips at 30:28 such an unpleasant yet familiar feeling
The amount of times I used to leave work with my PPE still on....just like Eric wearing his on the way home after closing the shop!! lol :)
Thanks Eric for sharing your knowledge on video. I just replaced the front struts assembly on my odyssey which had a broken spring from riding through a pothole, although I have done it before I like to refresh and get advice from other experienced mechanic like yourself to accomplish the job safety.. Thanks again.
Like to see more of these, just shows we all go through the same things whether it be customer interactions or ordering parts...good stuff eric keep it up!
Hey Eric, you should look into a Wonder Winder for your orange extension cord. Amazon for like $10 or $15. I have several all over my shop and love them. Cheaper and seem to last longer than a reel. You can just attach them at the outlets and have cords wherever you need one.
The best suspense I've seen: what the hell is the electrical issue on that AC! On the edge of my seat! (Great vid!)
more of this videos please eric. I liked it very much. Watching for the 2nd time now.
Greetings from the netherlands
Good to see the speed at which you work....and that you do the garbage as well....
Average, how many car you repair daily?
Netko treći that depends on the problems with the cars. some come for 2 or 3 jobs
nice job E. enjoyed a day in the life vid. typical frustrations when things don't go right! keep them coming ! 😊
Eric, you have a lot of talent and you should be proud because so many people have to rely on you because they can't handle the kind of work you do and they need help. Great job on the video.. May God Bless Your Business.
This was excellent, I think you should do one of these a week.
dude998866 I'd look that up quickly, very soon or just happened this year.
As is the common opinion, really enjoyed the video.
Nicely showed how you manage a day of work.I liked seeing the diagnosing.
Interesting that one of your customers brought the part to you. Is that as a favor to a friend?
Thank you for the well made video.
I do miss the diagnosis side of the repair business. Obviously, I don't miss flat rate. I would love to talk shop with you over lunch. We would both have a good laugh and roll our eyes at the things we have run across.
On some newer cars only switching on the ignition and air con without the engine running the air con system will not turn on so you won't be able to test the system this way, the compressor is only energised once the engine runs. 5:42
On standard use everyday cars, rubber brake hoses work more than efficiently; however just know that everything wears. Steal braided brake lines are best used when you have a vehicle you track or race. They will not expand due to increased heat from the rotors. Other than that, they only become a personal preference.
Before tackling electrical problem always look at the schematic so you know and have a direction where to go otherwise you'll be going around in the cycles in the world of electronics at least we both promote schematics from our channels good job Eric
Very honest day for honest day's work great job eric
Eric you might consider investing in an auto-ranging multimeter. Just a suggestion. I really enjoy watching your channel.
I like how you left the shop with your gloves still on.
Eric! Make this into a series!
Thank you, Eric. I am getting my self ready to go to mechanic school and by watching this video i think i will enjoy doing mechanical work. The only part i would have to get used to is the hard-to-reach parts.
Where are you now buddy? Did you become a tech?
@@knighthawk3559 tis only a dream . Hard to even get a job at a parts store .
This is my go to video i think its great
ive been a mechanic professionally since I was 21 I just turned 28 and I have honestly worked on plenty of cars trucks you name it ive fixed or replaced it except a evaporator core belive or not never once and from end of april until September its like almost a guarantee you do at least one car a day with ac issues but for what ever reason ive never had a issue kinda crazy
Hey ETCG, why not invest in a A/C machine? It'll probably pay itself off in a summers worth of aC work and will cut your diagnostics and repair time in half! Not to mention recovering the old refrigerant too...🤔 great videos by the way!
Wheel locks, incorrect parts, getting under dashes. It's nice to see someone else participating in the struggle lol.
I like how quiet the shop is my kind of environment
I always hated working on the late model Ford drum brakes. Springs for the shoes were a serious pain in the rear. :)
I really liked this style of video, would definitely like to see another one! Very cool to see a different perspective than normal.
Didn't realize how big the shop was until I was 4 cars park with space behind them and the lift empty.
He does have a torque stick js. That long blue socket almost looks like an extension that's a torque stick for the lugs.
Luckily when I have AC problems, my issues are usually obvious and easy to find. Like a clutch locking up and shredding a belt.
You have a very good camera man Eric and I enjoy your expertise.
I did the same wheel bearing job on my wife's nissan altima. Her brakes pins were also dry as a bone and rubbing like that one. Did you notice any rust under passenger floor board. Such a bad problem with those Nissans.
i think this guy its the most awesome mechanic in the world i wish my teacher was soo cool like this guy
Nice video and nice work ethics! Also great job by Brian on the camera and editing!!
This one of the greatest vids of yours ever.. well.. in my opinion :)
Yeah we definitely need more of this. Trouble is because the 'casual' viewer may have no idea what you're doing.. Perhaps leave them as exclusive only videos?
enjoyed Spending the day with you Etcg
Thanks Eric you’ve helped me in many situations that I was stuck on!
more A Day At The Shop videos!!
make more of these. Was very enjoyable. Would contribute towards Brian's pay.
Good effort, My Friend.. Truly a shame that our customers will insist on misunderstanding.... Most people believe that mechanic & wizard mean the same...
same here......busy busy......good job mate.
I like how you were uv dye glasses the whole video. lol I do that all the time at the shop man. It's summer, i know im bound to fix a/c sometime during the day in this hot Texas heat.
great video, I know I don't want to be a mechanic now. it would drive me crazy if it took me awhile to figure out a problem and expect to be paid for it and i'm thinking you don't get paid for all the time that you have to put in to diagnosing some problems. that probably doesn't make sense to most. eric your a good fit for what you do, keep up the great work!
Nice video, Eric. This answered a lot of questions I had. Would love to see more of these.
Cool video Eric.... neat idea! Proud of your techniques and religious care of your tools. Smart man. Where in Oklahoma was the Accord from? That's my home state!
Thanks for sharing the refrigerant with the environment.
Keep it up man, your channel is amazing! Electrical troubleshooting is the worst.
