I took the shsat last year and unfortunately failed with a 471, and I just wanna say that although you may find practice tests easy and what not. You will be nervous on the day of the test and I just wanna say that you shouldnt let it get to you.
PhantomxThief Did you know about the Bell Curve? Did you also know that you get a higher score when you have 1 wrong in Math and 15 wrong in ELA than getting 8 wrong for each?
@@ladidodi8912I took it just a few days ago! I was a bit stuck on some of the ELA but the math didn't feel that hard. Really hoping for Stuy this time 🤧
Thanks for this! I wanted to grade my own practice test I took and I got a 640. (If I did the math correctly) I'm taking the test this year and I want to make it to Brooklyn Tech. I'm taking a prep over the summer from Mon-Fri. I hope I get in!
xxs s well consider distance, size, and Brooklyn tech has 5000 kids and an old building, lots of stairs And you Can't go out for lunch. But more diverse, more clubs and stuff. Stuy has a better building, higher scores, not Rlly diverse, college like, can go out 4 lunch. But also a lot more stressful, like at least 3 hrs of hw a night, up to 8 probably. So it might be considered less fun or enjoyable. And I think BTECH is a good place for making friends since its so big, but idk
xxs s rumours r rumours, but also have some truth. I'm sure there r depressed kids at stuy and kids who take drugs their to do the workload too. And same for bronx. Stuy is an hour away from me which I can handle. Bronx is an hour and a half, which idk. And tech is 30 mins. Tbh not sure if I will end up going to a specialized hs, I Rlly do like bard and beacon, public schools, but I'll see
i have a question: since there’s different forms of the tests given out on the two days, wouldn’t the people who got the easier tests get a higher score?
yes, they would get a higher raw score. they would then get "curved" downward to be in the same range as kids who took the harder test look at 3:34 in this video for the breakdown 👍🏽
Tyler Tutor hi again, im here to ask what is your suggestion for Staten Island Tech? what im asking is what range should I score in to get into that school (out of 114 questions) thanks
So if I get a 100 on a easy section, and then it is calibrated down to a 85, how is that fair? I could have gotten a hundred as a calibrated score if I did the hard one.
Tyler do you think the cutoff score for Brooklyn tech would be higher, most of my friends said it was easy and since the ELA section was changed do you think the cutoff score would be higher for Brooklyn Tech?
very likely. If a bunch of kids crushed the test this year, schools might raise their cut-off. Alternatively, the city might curve everyone's test grades down a little bit and the cut-off scores stay the same
It’s 2/6 and 3:45 midnight. I am getting my results in March. I am really nervous and I don’t think I could get in. I still had hope and hopefully I could get in the high school that I wanted☺️
I’m currently a 8th grader and I’m staying at my school for 9th grade. My school is in the Bronx. I want to transfer to HSMSE because I thought more of my future and my school is really boring. I feel like my school is not preparing me for the future. Is there any way I can transfer?
Awesome, yes, you need to sign up, study for, and take the 9th grade shsat. It's more difficult than the 8th grad version but definitely doable if you work hard.
Totally. It's the same in a lot of ways, but in others, it's much harder. click this link and scroll to page 143 schools.nyc.gov/NR/rdonlyres/39E5EC65-FA08-4A2A-91AD-9F7334670B3D/0/20172018SpecializedHighSchoolsStudentHandbookENGLISH.pdf
Great explanation! One comment: The purpose behind the experimental questions is to gather insight into which questions are easy/medium/hard with an eye toward using them on future tests. One question: Is it true that, for example, a 35 + 35 raw score (70 total correct) on the two sections will not produce as good a composite score as, say, a 25 + 45 raw score? I've read that really excelling in one of the 2 sections gives your composite score a big boost
By one of the two sections, they meant either the Ela or Math sections. If you did really well on one of the two sections, it really boosts your grade.
This is true, having a 35 and 35 is great but not as great compared to getting a 25 and 45 because of the fact that there is a thing called the bonus section where if a student gets really really close to the perfect score section like getting 42,43,44,45, or 46they will get around a 10-15 point bonus as compared to being at 35 correct you would only get 3-4 or 6 points.
Did you use Kaplan yet? And yes, I agree the Shsat handbook was for me "easy" though I struggle in ELA mostly while math I just made 1 careless mistake. I suggest using Kaplan if you want. I'm currently reading it to prepare me for this October. Just some advice.
Hi Tyler Tutor, I want to get into The Bronx High School of Science, so what score should I get in minimum in order to get a good score to get into Bronx Science?
Those are hard schools to get into, but you can totally do it. First, before you make a plan, you have to know where you stand. Take a diagnostic (if you haven't already). Click the link below, and scroll down to page 40. There you'll see a full length SHSAT. Take the test, grade it, and come back with a score. Hey Tyler! I'm taking the ninth grade shsat's and after scoring myself using this method, I figured out that my average scaled score was around 732 with practice tests. It’s all about which school you put first and how many questions you missed. You can estimate that you could only miss about 10 math questions, assuming you’re a relatively smart student. If you missed more than 15 math questions, say goodbye to Stuyvesant. If you missed more than 20, say goodbye to Bronx Science. If you missed more than 30 questions in the math, you’re not getting into a school. And that’s assuming that you only got 10 ELA questions wrong
Sorry dude. You should've have done what you're comfortable with. I always start with math first as their is always one answer( besides fractional/decimal/percentage form) The ELA which I struggle the most, I always do last since the practice tests I took, I always plan 1 hour for math and the remaining 2 for ELA. Correct, wrong answers are scaled differently depending on how many you miss. However, they make missed questions more valuable on the top AND bottom of scoring. For example, the first and 20th question you get wrong might be worth 10 scaled points- while the 8th question you get wrong might only be worth 3 scaled points.
