Bill Bryson is indeed a legend. I get the impression that he is a dying breed though, from another era, where facts, critical thinking and humanism mattered.

For all the people who don’t like context, lol.
Still I think videos should list the times of each speaker for those in a hurry, so thank you.

Guys like Jimmy Fishcake should stick with ESPN and leave science to the adults. This is an awesome lecture and I immediately ordered his book.

I love his book a walk in the woods, I wish the Appalachian region would take into consideration the natural beauty like he points out. I can't go there anymore hardly without looking at the tourist trap it has become on the Tennessee side. It is this country's only sub tropical rainforest, other than the Washington state region. Hundreds of species of trees, ferns, and other flora. Nobody even stops to look at the hundreds of hummingbirds that visit these red wild flowers, or the butterfly's.

According to bill at around 23:46 the French admired Franklin for his understanding of science. However I read in Dale Carnegie's 'how to win friends and influence people' that the French loved Franklin because instead of scoffing at their social norms/values he was able to mold himself according to them and win them over as friends... if there is Anyone here who knows more about American history, I'd like to know what they think about this...Why was Franklin able to win the French over?
