I used Hugel Kultur in our garden boxes and it has made a tremendous difference in the watering. It retains a lot more moisture so we can water less. We also put straw around the plants to keep them from drying out - so far it's been wonderful. We are on year two of doing this. We use wood chips around out boxes and yes, it was free. Unfortunately, this morning I found termites in one of the garden boxes so I will be putting some diatomaceous earth down this evening. I suspect that it is really from pine trees that were once on the property. We were originally going to till the garden but ran into the roots of the pine and when we unearthed those, we saw the termites...granted it's been twelve years since we found the roots, but we never pulled them out. My husband did treat it before we covered it up, but I seriously doubt it came from the Hugel Kultur. I wish we could have some chickens to pick at them but we have a not-so-nice neighbor and her friend down the street is the wicked witch of the south so they would call on us even though we could technically have a couple of chickens.
Diatomaceous earth works really well on fleas too. We have cats so we didn't want to put toxins in our home. It totally works and is all natural. Thanks for this!
Someone asked Bill Mollison about termites he said get some chickens ;-) as they are a high protein source for chooks, if you don't have chooks then people can make termite traps or inspection boxes just use a piece of pvc capped both ends (don't glue) or a plastic box place damp cardboard inside have a few small holes for the termites to enter open it up every week or two if there are any termites add more cardboard that has been soaked in water that has had borax added and it will wipe out the termite nest. Hope this helps someone.
Diatomaceous earth is one of the best things you can use for the three pests mentioned in the video. For wood roaches you can also use a combination of sugar and borax soap indoors, but not around plants as it can harm them. Peppermint oil sprayed on your thresholds and around windows and cracks can keep many pests from coming indoors. 1/2 c. water, 1/2 tbsp salt and 10 drops peppermint essential oil in a spray bottle. You could also add cedarwood or cypress essential oil 5 drops. As for mice, cats in the neighborhood take care of them. I am still trying to figure out how to get rid of moles. My dog that used to dig them up has passed away.
I have 6 beds, and never seen termites in Southern coastal Georgia or in my wood chips, but I have these massive , millipedes, TONS of toads, frogs, and lizards. I do have termite traps all around my house, the shed, outbuildings, and I keep the moisture away from them all also.
@@thenaturalhuman9568 thank you for answering the question that was my biggest concern I don’t want to kill my worms yesterday at the end of my yard by the fence I dug four holes to plant my small elderberries I noticed the dirt I was digging had a lot of termites now I’m worried about my little trees that I piled mulch around I’m also going to try another method 1 cup boric acid two cups sugar in boiling water then take outside and soak small pieces of dry wood and stake them into the ground where the colonies are at as they eat the wood they take back to colony and kill the rest of them don’t know if it works but the guy on RUclips said that’s what he did and it worked for him at this point it’s better that doing nothing and losing my trees
Well this was my final answer! Thanks!!! Do you make your own compost, worm castings and worm tea? Theres some awesome info out there about all those as well.... Nice garden you've got!!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!
As you were walking around you passed a plant several times that had green leaves that looked kind of like society garlic and had beautiful yellow flowers. Can you tell me what that plant is? I would like to incorporate some in my yard.
I had a swarm of termites come out of my wood chips this spring. It's good to know that you can kill them. I don't put wood chips near my house because I don't want them getting in my house. I don't mind them in my garden though. do you know if the pool grade Diatomaceous Earth is good for bugs to?
I did not add anything to the soil. Just cardboard and woodchips. Because the woodchips are placed atop the soil and not mixed in, it will not tie up nitrogen but instead act as a skin to the earth helping to stop erosion and retain moisture all while building the soil as the chips break down.
Hey my bro 🖖🖖 Love your ethos. Too true your words abt the powers that be, there money's made with poisons in my view. ❤❤your channel keepem coming stay healthy ☺☺☺

What size pipe, how big of holes, how many in each end and ratio of water and Borax?
Thanks!
Great info and advice as usual, Dan. Thank you for all you do for our RUclips community.
Termites help break down the wood into humus which builds soil structure with clay its aeration making the soil fluffier as with sand it thickens it

This is from LONDON ,ENGLAND . love your 'down to earth' really practical presentations
Thank you so much. My husband brought up this concern, and I'm relieved for this video.
There are beneficial nematodes that eat termites you can purchase online.
Good info Donald. Cheers!

How do your worms respond to the diatomaceous earth? Thanks
Good question…
Earthworms have a muscular body not an insect exoskeleton

I made a mistake below DE is safe for earth worms according to Google

Thank you for sharing your inspiring messages :)
I have found 3 containers that had massive amounts of termites. I was wondering about using DE. As I use it on my animals.
Thank you. I really wish that you were my neighbor or at least lived in the Las Vegas area.

Yes but it’s more expensive
Food grade is the way to go imo.
Great Information 👍👍
Do you apply just once or have to apply often?
What is the soil in your growing beds made of ???
I wouldn't just spread diatomaceous earth around like crazy tho as it also kills worms. I would only use as a spot treatment
I've been using wood chips for 3years and I've never seen a termite.
Does diatomaceous earth kill worms?
would like to know this to?
de only works when dry, doubt if it will hurt worms
I'm quite sure it does, as it is a remedy for wire worms too
@@andy6043 Then it won't work on termites either who are obsessed with maintaining high moisture in their environment.
Termites might be a good feed for free range chickens
non-sporulating corticepts works better
I love your videos
Do you add any nitrogen additive before you spread the wood chips, or do you just spread the chips on the ground?

Does DE kill worms? I don't want to kill worms
No. DE will not kill soil dwelling earthworms. They can actually digest it easily.
Like you Brother.
do not kill your naturel life you Will chok the balance of nature think you for all the video
Thanks! I learned something new today!
Wood chips are the best!
