- Maybe I took the ARRL summer "Field Day" a little to literally?.. LOL.. We get the ole 1938 JD Model A tractor out once a year and put her to work for a few hours of "old time" fun, so I took the IC705 and back pack along to make some calls.. This hobby is more fun than I could have imagined.. LOL
Thanks for stopping by and watching.. 73
I loved this video, especially the music and your expression when you made the first contact!
Hi Steve.. Thanks for stopping by.. Ya, after my Bikes on the Air failure and that dry spell, I got a little excited when someone actually repeated my call sign and gave me a good signal report.. It's just the simple things in life that make me happy, LOL ! !... Thanks for watching and commenting.. I appreciate it.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb

Ken, I love this video. Thank you for the QRP call. My first Tractor on the Air! 73! - Bill
Hi Bill.. and thank you for pausing and asking for QRP stations.. I would not have made it in, were it not for that.. It gives us little guys a chance to make it on the logs.. Hope to catch you again on my next adventure.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
When I was a 15 year old kid I drove a John Deere A and started it by turning the fly wheel exactly as you did it this video. Will be 79.
Hi Jan.. Thanks for sharing that.. I hope those were memorable times for you.. I started driving tractor on a JD 3020 diesel in the 70's, so the 2 cylinders were gone by then.. Its always fun to get the A out and put her to work, but I will admit, my body was a little sore last night after pulling on the fly wheel and crawling up and off the seat several times, LOL.. Thanks for watching and commenting.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
👍👍👍👍👍
Awe man, my Grandpa Bell had a John Deere Model A, back in Bloomington, Illinois - where I grew up!
Talk about a "Field" Day - Awesome!!

Hi Rodger.. Those old memories from that era are the best.. Things just seemed more "normal" back then, LOL.. Thanks for watching and commenting.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
Enjoyed this video so much! My grandparents were North Carolina produce farmers and I spent all my summers growing up on the farm. I’ve spent many hours behind the wheel of our little McCormick Farmall A and sometimes up on the big International 504. Great to see that old John Deere still rolling! 73 my friend!
Hey Walt.. Thanks for stopping by.. Sounds like some great memories growing up.. Those little Farmall A's were a very popular tractor.. Almost everyone had one.. Thanks for sharing and watching.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
Nice video, n good farming 😊👌
Hi Kishh.. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.. Glad you enjoyed it.. Thanks for watching.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
Awesome! Spent many a day riding on the plow behind my grandpa on an old JD, fond memories. 73, KC4BB

Hi Orlando.. Thank you for your kind words.. I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment.. Glad you enjoy the videos.. Greetings from Iowa ! !... 73, Kevin ~ k0klb (sorry, that previous entry was from another channel I manage.. opps)
Great 1st contact. Enjoyed the qrp net Sat night at 8est !
Hello conchd.. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.. That 1st contact came after a long dry spell of no calls and utter "Failure" during the Bikes On The Air video I did a few days earlier, so I was pretty darn excited to hear someone finally repeat my call sign, LOL... Thanks for joining the QRP net.. We have a lot of fun listening to other operators play "how low we can go" with their radios.. It fun to "stress test" those antennas and make them work for those calls.. It just amazes me what ppl are doing and its fun to be a part of it.. I hope you come back regularly and play along.. Thanks for watching.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
Kool....Field Day from the Iowa field on the old popping John tractor.
Hi Ken... The ole Poppin John.. That's what my Grandpa used to say too, LOL... Glad you enjoyed it.. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.. I appreciate it.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
@@hamradioqrp-k0klb That ole John Deere was made the year that I was born.....Yes, I'm older than dirt...too.
Hi Ken.. That's something to celebrate.. well done !...
Love the tractor!
Hey Carson ! !.. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.. 84 years old.. She's a little dusty but can still get the job done.. Thanks for watching.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
That is awesome Kevin. I spent many days/hours on a 3020 gaser and a 6 row cultivator. Loved cultivating! If only I’d been a ham back then!! Thanks for the video! 73
Hey Thor ! !... I know, right?.. Mee Too.. 3020 diesel, 6 row RM cultivator.. Sun up to Sun down (with cattle chores in between).. Had to do every field once, then again a second time to "lay it by".. I can't imagine the hours spent doing that all summer long.. Thanks for your comment and great to hear from you again.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
@@hamradioqrp-k0klb Boy..that brings back memories! We tried to get through everything twice. I thought we really made it big when we added a second tractor and cultivator. 24 rows a round!! Wow!! Then added rolling speed shields too! LOL! I miss those days now…
Very awesome Kevin!
Hi Curt ! !.. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.. I appreciate it much.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
Very nice video. Keep them coming
Hi Bradley.. Thank you for your comment.. I appreciated it and I'll keep trying.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
Hi just found your channel. I am not on Facebook. I plan to run QRP in the UK. Will listen out on Friday just on the chance I may pick up you guys signal. Cheers from old George in the UK 🤠👍🇬🇧
Hi George.. Thanks for your comment.. I see here that you are not on facebook.. I responded to another message with some FB info, so you can disregard that and follow the frequency suggestions I mentioned.. The two control stations (myself in Iowa and the second station in South Carolina) operate at 100w so we have the best chance of folks hearing us.. Hopefully you will be able to catch one of us and check in.. Use what ever power you need to come in and we can work down from there if conditions allow it.. Thanks for stopping by.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
Good to see the mad Scientist in Action. Great stuff Kevin....💯👍👍👍🙋♂️

Great job Kevin. You got out there on a great day as well. What a view except for those nosy neighbors. Mine started out nice as well and you’ll have to see how it ends up when my video posts around 11AM Monday. Thanks and still trying to get to Iowa for a mutual activation of some sort. Ham-Solo K0FYR
Hey Mike.. haha.. I swear, when I'm out there doing something with an antenna and radio, every neighbor in the hood drives by, slooooooowly, LOL... Always look forward to your vids.. Will check it out today.. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
You could bury the radials/counterpoise as you drove around with the plough :D Excellent video as ever - thanks for the giggles and lovely video, llove that whip atnenna on the IC705 bag, great idea.
Hi Alze.. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.. I appreciate it.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb

TOTA - Tractors on the Air ;^)
Hi Doug.. hahaha.. That would work, LOL.. there are so many OTA's now days.. Its funny what folks come up with.. Thanks for watching and commenting.. I appreciate it.. 73 Kevin ~ k0klb
Hey Kevin, well you made the start of my day with a smile on my face. Love the JD and combo Ham Radio especially QRP Field Day. So Kevin, may I ask what you setup is for this video. I see you are using the I-705 but what is the backpack and the antenna and do you have a battery. This looks like the perfect setup for when the SHTF. Thank you for sharing Kevin, you are both entertaining and educational. Jan 73
Hi Jan.. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. Yes I have the ic-705 and have it in the Icom LC-192 backpack which is built specifically for the 705.. It's a little spendy, but I like it cause they made great use of velcro and I can route all my cables internally and keep it all contained and has room for my mAT-705 auto tuner.. There is a nook and cranny in every corner to run cables, etc.. Its light weight and works for what I want to do.. My only beef with it is it could be a little larger for packing.. While it does hold all my tools and wire accessories, I suppose they kept is small so I wouldn't try to pack the whole shack in there and have it weigh 40 lbs, LOL.. I mounted a coax/mirror mount on the hard plastic side of the backpack and I can use any hamstick of any band on there.. I do not have an external battery, but a small bioenno 6ah battery is on my list to get and pack inside.. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.. Hope I answered your questions.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
@@hamradioqrp-k0klb Thank you so very much for replying Kevin and yes, that did help. 73
nice
Not being able to play radio while cultivating is probably a good thing so you avoid getting iron blight in those beans.
I’m sure they rectified that with auto steer and such.
Hi Brian.. boy, you got that right !!.. Trying to explain the ole "iron blight" to Dad was not fun.. Especially in the fall when he did all the combining he would find EVERY spot, LOL.. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment,... 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
@@hamradioqrp-k0klb you were smart and left yours in the middle of the field. Mine was always at the headlands for Dad, Grandpa, God, and all the neighbors to see!
@@BrianWM8G hahahaha.. Oh trust me, I had those on the end rows as well.. curved rows on a side hill were the worst !!!... LOL
I could tell you were having fun and that you were excited to share the fun with us. You are the Cool Ham Op! I remember working out in the fields with the rotary hoe, belly cultivator and the modern 3 point hitch rear cultivator. Our family was raised on Oliver Tractors. Did you know Oliver invented the color blind plow? That plow would work with any brand of tractor. Oliver was the first to build a plow that the rear lift wheel is steered by the 3 point hitch to follow within the rear tire tracks of the tractor during end field turns. Dad had a 6 bottom oliver plow using an Oliver 1950-T tractor. The T stands for Turbo. See what happens when you bring back old memories with an antique tractor! lol! Thanks again for an interesting video, I enjoyed it as much as you did. 73 Neighbor! This is an old video from the 60's of the color blind plow if you were interested in seeing it. ruclips.net/video/1m124FlhHDo/видео.html
Hi Ferrell.. Yes, after my Bikes on the Air failure.. I was super excited that someone finally answered my call.. It was a breath of fresh air and it felt great, LOL.. and then a 56 signal report with my 5w was icing on the cake.. It sounds like you have some field experience too.. We did the rotary hoes too and boy that was a dirty, dusty job.. I remember coming home, taking a shower, washing my hair and the water just turning black and muddy as it went down the drain.. Thanks for the video link.. They put a lot of work into that color blind plow advertisement back then.. I had never heard of that and it was very interesting to see.. Thanks for sharing, watching and leaving a comment.. I appreciate it.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb

Hey Don.. Thanks for watching and commenting.. Glad you enjoyed it.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
nice backpack
Hi Craig.. It's the icom LC 192 backpack.. It's spendy (but what isnt these days) and it fits everything I need to take portable.. It has nice hidden openings, secured with velcro, to run cables and the mic cord through so it's very well thought out.. For me it's worth the ca$h.. Thanks for stopping by and watching.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
@@hamradioqrp-k0klb i really enjoy the kind of radio youdo
Thank you Craig.. I appreciate your comment.. I kind of hit a dry spell with my Bikes on the Air video so I was surprised and got a little excited when someone finally responded to me with a good signal report from the tractor on the first call.. What a relief, LOL !! ... Thanks again.. k0klb
Enjoyed the video. What rig were you running and is that an resonant whip?
Hi Warren.. Thanks for stopping by.. It’s an ic705 with the ic192 backpack.. I use a mAT705 tuner to the hamstick.. the hamstick is tuned as best I could and the tuner matches the rest.. Thanks for watching .. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
So I guess you were portable mobile?
Hello yinglyca1.. I'm thinking something like that too, but I dunno.. I think there are a few ways we could say it but I like Portable Mobile.. Thanks for watching and commenting.. 73 Kevin ~ k0klb
