Mage: The Hero Discovered and Grendel were massive parts of my young comic experience in the 80s. I was so disappointed at what I felt was a radical drop in quality and vision when the first Mage sequel came around (couldn't make it through the second volume of the trilogy, let alone touch the third part), but the first 15 issues remain untouchable. Couple that with the incredible work on Grendel by Matt, Bernie Mireault, and the Pander Bros... Very grateful for those stories and art!
Matt Wagner is so underrated and under appreciated. Thank you for this interview. I would love to see more! I fit one would love to hear more about blue line coloring and the business of indie comics.
Matt Wagner! One of the unsung heroes of the 80's indie boom, doesn't get mentioned with Gaiman and Miller but deserves to be in their company, a wonderful storyteller. Definitely need to hear more from him, as well as Chaykin, Baron & Rude, Grell, and Truman, give the legends their flowers while we can 🤘
Never heard of Matt Wagner till early this year. Saw a review for Grendel omnibus vol 1 and bought it and was blown away. Bought the other 3 omni's and felt the same way. Realised Wagner is a brilliant writer so bought the Sandman mystery theatre compendium vol 1 which became my favourite book of the year. Brilliant artist and incredible writer.
Grendel was my gateway comic. I was about 12 years old when I bought The Devil's Legacy tpb at Waldenbooks. I flipped through it and was amazed at the writing and the sharp artwork of the Pander brothers. That thing ate up a huge chunk of my saved cash, but I had to have it. This was the first time I was exposed to comics that were written more intelligently with art that had a different style from the superhero stuff I was buying off the newsstand. Matt Wagner and the Brothers Pander altered my comics reading tastes forever.
Gentlemen: THIS is the Shoot I was watching for! Been following Matt. since MAGE I; #1 and he has yet to disappoint! DEMON is one of my faves-Wagner was still in post-MAGE I art style and his treatment of Etrigan and Blood’s relationship and severing were exquisite, only to be reversed by Starlin for COSMIC ODYSSEY. Looking forward to all that is yet to come! VIVAT KAYFABE! VIVAT WAGNER!!!!!🖖♾
Matt Wagner and the Pini's were my introduction into a lifelong love affair with indie comics, which I now write. Cheers to you, Mr. Wagner! If you're at NYCC, I'm doing signing Thursday-Friday, it would be an honor to meet you in person. 👍👍
I met Wagner at the Baltimore comicon years ago and got into a nice conversation with him. Totally forgot to ask if he could sign my trade of his run on Doctor Mid-Night for me.
Mage really shook things up! I was living in Eugene when those early Comico titles popped up in the two local shops--"What the hell are these things?!" They were rough, but pretty darn cool and wild.
Sir, Mr Wagner. I got to meet you at the AZ comic con in 2008. You were kind and generous with your time. Thanks. Still buying Grendel 30 years in. Please don't ever stop.
Great job, guys! Just happened to paging through a copy of the Demon ,issue 22 from April 1992 ! Writing/art by Matt!👍Coloring by Bernie Mireault (The Jam) What a gem!❤️😎🎯👋
Another great 'shoot' interview, one of the great artists to come out of the 1980's and my childhood, loved Grendal. Has anyone ever met him at a convention?
Oh, wasn't expecting a "Matt Wagner Experience!" Grendel was so great, so different, so original! Mage also further elevated the iconic status of Chuck Taylors for my friends and I =). Too bad about the Grendel show. It's surprising that that it was completed. Looks like Christmas is bringing in the presents quite early because of this interview. Thanks you Matt Wagner, thank you Cartoonist Kayfabe.
would love to see Grendel 16-19 under microscope, two short stories with a framing sequence drawn in wildly different ways by Wagner. It was also published by DH as Devil Tracks and Devil Eyes and together as Devil Tales.
The second shoot interviewee in a row to mention the magnification of errors when seeing your artwork in print. I had a grammatical error in my first comic and I can never look past it.
Can someone tell Matt to go to his fans to generate a kickstarter and create funds for finishing the production of the Grendel show. By him finishing it and selling it himself all the profit would go to him.
Mage was the comic that dragged me back in. I was all out except for the odd vintage WWII comic. And on a whim I grabbed Mage 11 at a flea market comic dealers table. Bang hooked!
Sorry, I'm geeking-out here. I may end up with 200 comments on this video. Random thoughts. Grendel #24 page 26 has what is probably my favorite comic panel ever : "and the devil walked the earth again." Oh yeah. Wagner is in the trinity of creators of whom I call myself a total whore for, that is I buy everything they do: him, Simonson and Chaykin. There is always something good you can take from their works. They could put out a limited edition sketch of a toilet and I'd line up to buy it.
Dude I been a fan of grendel since February 2023 and he's already best villains I ever seen in hunter rose appearance and I'm still they cancelled his show on Netflix but as also Mortal Kombat fan it will be awesome grendel join mk1, grendel is my favorite comic book series

When the Badger came out it was legendary! It would be fun to have a video on the capital comics! They also published the first Nexus color books!
"the whole thing was filmed"
holy sh!t
Hope it leaks
I'm praying to bring it back 🙏🙏🙏
Grendel: Devil Quest was so awesome!

I've never clicked one of your videos so fast! Grendel and Grendel Tales are the greatest comics ever! War Child is the greatest comic ever made
Man I really gotta get reacquainted with Sandman Mystery Theatre

One of my favorite comic creators! I absolutely love everything “Grendel.”
Excellent interview! Very cool to hear about the early Comico days. Definitely need to have Matt back to hear more about his storytelling process.

Grendel War Child is my favorite of his. Tower Chronicles is also damn good !
Been a Matt Wagner fan since the early Grendel black and whites. Looking forward to Grendel:Devil's Crucible.
Devil by the Deed Master's Edition sounds amazing.
RIP to Phil LaSorda, Dennis' brother. He taught me so much. :(

Great cover on that issue, also.
@@randywhitehair5403 Cartoonist Kayfabe rocks!🎯And yup found the Demon comic in the dollar bin at my LCS! Buried treasure!
Heck yeah! Thanks for making me dig through my stacks and do some re-reading!
Another great 'shoot' interview, one of the great artists to come out of the 1980's and my childhood, loved Grendal. Has anyone ever met him at a convention?
I still have my Grendel shot glass and ball cap from back in the day.

Matt Wagner is the man!!! Great interview guys!
Pitt Artist Brush pens are incredible
Love the “No Dogs In Space” shout-out! That podcast is a must-listen for me.
Great stuff!!. Thanks guys. Now I wanna go drinking with Matt.
He 100% nailed it when he said characters work in the period they were developed in. I would love to see a 30s Superman or Batman by Mr. Wagner.
Check out the Batman 1919 - 1939 RUclips series if you haven't already...
Another excellent interview. Insightful to hear about Wagner retaining Grendel. Thanks, guys!
MATT WAGNER???? MATT F***ING WAGNER??????? YESSSSSSSSSS!!!! Thank you!!!!
This has been a great interview 😊
PLEASE, PLEASE MATT DO A SUPERMAN 30’s PERIOD PIECE!!!
It's Kevin Matchstick !!!!!!! he sounds exactly how I imagined when I was a 14 year-old

The "weird" airbrush colors dragged me in. The weird urban fantasy sparked my imagination. Been a die hard Wagnerian ever since.
And that led to others, Mignolia, Ellis (Warren and Garth) Hitch, Morrison, Vaughn etc.
Yessss! You guys are the best.
Faber Castel pens are my go to. Big fan of the SB pen. Long time fan of Grendel.
