Winter Bikepacking in Canada in December!

- In December 2022 a group of us went on an overnight bikepacking trip to Elk Island National Park in Alberta, Canada. We experienced freezing temperatures, long hikes through knee deep snow, and cold headwinds in the dark.
Winter should not be a time you spend only indoors. Get out and enjoy it! With the proper preparation, you can have a great time experiencing Canada in the wintertime!
That looks like fun. I do Winter bike commute in my city and love it. We haven't had much snow this season so far (have yet to power up my snowblower) so my studded tires haven't been put to use yet. Never tried fat bike riding and don't own one so I'll have to borrow one to test ride. My co-workers think I'm nuts riding to work and home in snowy and blizzard conditions.
Nice work commuting through the winter! We have very little snow this year too. When we do our trip this year, you could probably ride a gravel bike. 😄
I love a good fat bike pack adventure! Kudos to you to have a nice place to sleep. Happy trails.
Look so much fun
Yeah, it was great!
Wow! Well done!
Thanks so much!
Looks like a great time. I live in Fort Sask and ride year round here. Well, down to -20 C anyway. I recognize all those river valley trails as I ride to the big city a lot in the summer months. Hope we get some snow soon.
Thanks for watching! I hope we get some snow soon too!
I loved your trip and video. Thank you!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
it's good when there are like-minded people👍
Absolutely!
I would have been done by that last hike a bike. Kudos to all of you!!
Thanks! Slow and steady gets you through those parts. 👍
Quite the adventure. Cheers from New Brunswick.
Cheers! Thanks for watching!
Great video! Looks like fun was had by all.
Yeah! It was a great time! - Dean
I'm cycling towards you guys right now. If all goes to plan I'll be there by early April. I'd love to go on one of these with you guys. You might need to lend me a fat bike though. Haha!
That would be great! We may not need fat bikes in April though. The snow is usually pretty much gone by then. Drop me a comment when you are closer and we will see if an overnighter can be arranged. 🤙
Looks fun! Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
So much fun!
So much! 😄
Nice work! Tough haul, but worth it. Enjoyed the video!
Thanks! It was a great trip with a few good challenges. Thanks for watching!
Looks like a challenging, yet great ride and experience. I'd love to do something like this sometime. Downside, I'd probably be on my own doing ut, unless I could recruit a couple people to join. But that's hard to manage when you don't associate with many people and are moving soon.
If I do something like this where I'm moving to. Trust me, I'll be sure to have plenty of batteries for the GoPro, and ways to recharge when needed. Then I will launch a youtuibe channel. I think it would be fun, despite doing it all on my own. I'd still love it and maybe find tips/tricks/hacks for others to do so on their own too. Would be3 a great time I think!
It was a great time! I hope you can get out and get some people to join. I look forward to seeing your videos! Let me know your handle when you get it set up!
Nice one guys!
Thanks @majosrnik8111!!
That looks totally fantastic!
It was! 😁
By the way this is such fantastic video!!!! Everything about it is great!!
What camera are you using? The video from it is absolutely fantastic! My GoPro Hero 8 Black doesn't even get close to this quality.
Thanks! I have a Gopro Hero 11 Black. I modified a bunch of settings following the Loam Rangers videos and that helps a lot. It only records about 20-30 seconds in the cold though. That's almost a blessing though because it keeps me from recording too much footage. 😄
I would like to go with you guys if you go this year again... Hopefully we'll get snow :)
It would be great to have you! We are going again this year, weather permitting. For more info go to my Facebook page: facebook.com/deanonwheels
Nice video dean
Thanks so much!!
Well filmed just subbed
Thanks!
What are those glass pyramids at time 1:23 / 10:34? Are they green houses or something more sinister?
Not sinister, Haha! They are the Muttart Gardens. Each pyramid has a different ecosystem that the public can visit.
Id like to see more adventure ❤❤
There's more on the way!
Nice sunset. Why don't more Canadians ride trikes?
Thank you! Not sure about the trikes...
How much p s I should be in your tires for winter riding in snow please???
It depends on the softness of the snow. If it's soft, you can go down to about 4-5psi. If you are riding firm trails, you can go up to 9-10psi. On 5" wide tires, 10 psi will feel rock hard. Hope that helps!
Any users of glasses? How you ride without fogging up glasses?
I wear contact lenses so don't need to deal with that. My wife has that problem so she wears contacts just when she rides. I'm not sure of any tricks to prevent that other than to just keep moving. Air circulation seems to help.
Studded tires??
I used studded tires but they were probably not necessary for this trip.
What they skinny pannier bag yellow and grey brand called look good
I believe those were DIY handmade by the rider. He's pretty handy!
What kind of camera you have been using?
Everything was filmed with a GoPro Hero 11 Black. I took some still photos with my phone.
There was no bike camping done at all....what a disspointing video!! :(
Thanks for your comment. Bike camping was certainly involved but the focus of the video is on the journey. It’s about going on a fun overnight trip while enjoying the company of good people. It’s about having good times and celebrating being outside on the bike!
@@andersonsoutside How did everyone sleep? Didn't look like much overnight gear.
@@TapioBlue judging from the snoring, we slept pretty well. Lol! We packed fairly light but we all had enough to sleep comfortably.
Oh that’s how you call it - hike a bike? 😅 Great adventure and stunning sunset on your way back! Thanks for sharing, subscribed 🤝
