    One night not long ago I was walking in the fields behind my home in central Oregon with my NODs (PVS14) on my helmet. As one does. Anyway, I was looking into the fields on a moonless night and thought I could see pretty well then brought up my thermal and about shit my pants, there was a small herd of deer not more than 20 yards from me. They knew I couldn’t see them so they were content to just watch me walk by. My point is, thermal is where it’s at for threat detection. It’s worlds better than night vision.

    Great review from a trusted source.
    Jamie Caldwell, ret Unit Sgt Maj teaches lot of night vision. Tells about being lukewarm on thermal till it saved his bacon. Laddering wall. Looks around. Clear on nods. Then catches tiny spot on thermal. Guy right below in heavy grass. Had him dead to rights. Was slowly bringing AK to bear. That was his only mistake. Not going to win many up drills with SOF especially Varsity Team. Now he recommends both.
    Thanks again for review and education.

    The only thing I don't like is the frame rate. It's only good at walking speed or stationary. But if you go over 10mph it starts like flickering and lagging. I like it but it's not replacing my PVS 14s.

    This thing looks cool. How does it compare to fusion NODS? I heard a story from a dude on the varsity team who said thermal saved his life from a dude with an AK hiding behind the straw on the bank of the Euphrates that regular NV didn’t pick up. Definitely the future not just for soldiers but for drones, vehicles, everything.

    • @TacticalRifleman
      @TacticalRifleman  8 месяцев назад +1

      My opinion, Fusion are too heavy and bulky right now.

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 8 месяцев назад

      Fusions are far superior to COTI because the thermal overlay is distinct from the phosphor. However all thermal overlays suffer from false positives because the overlay computer is "dumb" it only highlights hot spots, not clusters so you tend to see a lot of highlights. This can actually cause you to ignore a thermal signature. Personally the best thermal solution is a thermal monocular on one eye and a 14 on the other eye mounted on a panobridge. The military is heavy on binoculars but they actually don't provide any advantage over a monocular. The panobridge helps keep the thermal image separate from the IIT image which improves clarity and a dedicated thermal image is a lot easier to see distinct heat signatures. Regular thermals are still prone to false positives, but it is as simple as rotating the head to switch to IIT and confirm your target.
      Main reason the military doesn't use thermal monocular is because you can't aim with lasers, however that's the reason for having the 14 on the other eye. Also the pano bridge is articulating so you could just flip the thermal up and BAC align your red dot over onto your night vision image for passive aiming. The ENVG is a lot easier plug and play without training (gun camera) which is primarily why it was the designed the way it is. I mean people still struggle to understand how to adjust ocular and objective, so that gives you an idea of the skill level the Army is catering to.

    Compass is so underrated. How many times have you heard someone call "contact left/right" or some variation and everyone is panning like sprinklers because they don't have a true heading lol. An amazing feature for any fireteam.

    • @jastrapper190
      @jastrapper190 8 месяцев назад +3

      I was a Marine Infantryman and did three combat Deplyments including the initial invasion of Iraq. What you typed is 100% correct. I started always carrying a good watch and a good wrist compass. This was before GPS was so widespread. We had big Pluggers. We did have the standard lensatic compass which is great. But when an artillery round lands near you or you have contact or just need to make an immediate report or issue an immediate order… having just a rudimentary cardinal direction is invaluable. It’s something every infantry fireteam leader needs to be able to do instantly at all times even under duress.

      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@jastrapper190 The best feature of the IVAS can bring is the ability to label points of interest, much like the video game PUBG mobile. It's amazing how good it is at coordinating with people even without speech (as most of the people who play that game are indians or chinese). Although I'm certain that the true purpose of pushing the IVAS is to have more micromanagement of the average infantryman's actions to the extent of telling them exactly what to do (which is going to cause problems like it did for LE snipers when gun cameras were being pushed), some features could be massive help.
