I think some of the commenters should be less angry at public service workers and more angry at MPs. MPs have been giving themselves wages increases at higher rates than inflation and higher rates than the union is asking for, which is lower than inflation.
Well why aren’t they protesting that?! Instead of being selfish. And only trying to get increases for themselves. Maybe they should have got the ball rolling with protesting about inflation for everyone but they can’t do that, the government is their boss they don’t wanna lose their jobs. Lol
PSAC is asking for 4.5% after a year of 10% inflation? That is awfully generous of them. If I could strike for 10%, I would. Anyone paying rent, or had a mortgage come up for renewal, or watched food prices keep climbing to heights unseen. And then there is gas.. 70c a litre just a few years ago, almost $1.70 today? 4.5% does not cover the damage done. It is still a pay cut.
you forget that they get 3% almost every year guaranteed and their pensions are almost entirely paid for by taxpayers. Oh and they have almost infinite sick leave.
Our elected officials get an automatic pay raise EVERY SINGLE YEAR without having to lift a finger. Not a Justin hater, but his salary increased by 30k this year alone. Thirty thousand dollars. I operate a forklift and make 5k more than that. What the hell?

Canadians will say government workers are out of touch or not the right time for an increase. Good times, recession, pandemic, basically there is never a good time to ask for a raise, except look at the last 10 years of Canadian average increases, they are higher than government workers. While Canadians got 2.5%-3.5%, governments at the federal level got 1.5%. We would have probably gone on strike last contract, but it wasn't the right time due to the pandemic. That excuse is over. Today, government just offered green energy incentives of $13 Billion, but you don't have $ 1 billion over 3 years? Really.
So you want socialism then? People who can't succeed in the private sector want the security and benefits of the public sector. But now it's the cake and eat it too. Work from home for the same wage as those who have to commute and put in 8 hours. Come recession time it's mass layoffs and growing debts with not enough revenue to pay those wages. Try living 65 years or educating yourself of our history.
Everyone’s hurting due to high inflations , people can’t even afford housing. But yet wants Canadian tax payer to pays 13% wage increase and works from home… how couchy. Might as well hires foreign worker at that rate. Anyone can do that job overseas for less
Bottom line is it will paid by middle class individuals that don't receive anywhere near these kinda Increases. Most likely tax returns will be delayed hurting people more. They are bulling there employer who is a glorified theif. Too many workers that get paid for horrendous service that only goverment could get away with.
Some of these comments here are wild. A large percentage of these employees are University graduates with a ton of job experience and they're literally asking for a raise to ALMOST match inflation. That's not asking very much at all. Everyone knows that there are pros and cons to working for the government and a competitive living wage has ALWAYS been one of them. We are all taught that government jobs will pay well/offer good benefits and as soon as you change that, no one of quality will continue to want to work for the government. Since Covid, there has been a serious reduction in the quality of services that we receive PRIVATELY (employers are having a hard time maintaining quality staff). I don't think we want to start experiencing that drop in the public sector as well. These aren't the politicians who are making six figures (none of them do, look it up). These are your middle-class neighbours who push papers, work in prisons and government buildings. They don't consistently strike (last 20 years) and they are simply fed up. While I will concede that none of them are experiencing TRUE poverty; the fact that they are unable to be approved for mortgages or afford basic amenities should be extremely concerning to people. Government employment should be a high standard (it is) and it should be compensated accordingly (it currently isn't). It's as simple as that. You can hate the government and still think that they should pay their employees fairly. To those of you who think 'they make enough already, they're fine': you are truly cowards in my opinion. You would let the government not pay them a contract while the prices of everything around them skyrocket. You support Trudeau pushing around his citizens and expecting them to take less than what is fair and less than what Canada has always offered. That may be fine for you, which is why you are not a coworker of the people on the picket lines yet remain critical and arguably jealous of them from afar. Stay solid PSAC.
@@mackendw of course, that's how I've always thought salary increases should be. Indexed to inflation + some percentage. If inflation is 15%, you're protected. If inflation is 0%, you're protected. You're literally just following the cost of living, plus a small increase.
I agree to retain competent employees you must pay accordingly. I’ve heard number from 13% pay increase to 47%. What’s fact I don’t know. And as we go to a more computer based process sure going to the office may not be the biggest deal. But as a tax payer why not sell the building and make them all work from home. Office equipment is on the employee. Just like tool costs are on the mechanics, plumber etc. they already get dental and a few other perks which is more then the private sector gets. I just think is bad timing to get the publics suport things like passports finally open up and now we the people pay for it double over. Also the union never missed a pay check like some private sector workers.
Give them all a pay cut to where they are making what they deserve...about 50% cut. Then give them 24 hrs to be in the office. Someone else can do the job, better than them.
Govt. wants 3 %/yr for 3 years. Union wants 4.5%. Have to say how can 3% be acceptable? We're coming off inflation of 6% and I don't see Canada achieving that all desirable 2% any time soon. C'mon, give them the 4.5% and lets get going.
How many private industries that actually provide value see 4.5 yearly increases. Parasites demanding more that will be burdened on the middle class like everything else.
Most of my co-workers bring their lunch, I live two minutes from work, so telework doesn't really save me any money. Also I wear to work what I wear at home - Jeans and T-shirts, we are not open to the public anyway.

At this point just let them work from home 🙄 they already don’t do anything in the office. They’re just clogging up downtown restaurants and public areas during the day since they’re always out smoking, gossiping and drinking coffee until the end of their shifts. Much less traffic if they stay home and do nothing instead of going at the office to do equally nothing.
That's funny, since productivity went up by double digits since they started working from home. And the only reason that the government wants them back in the office is because those same downtown restaurants went to Mona Fortier and asked her to force them back in so that they could make more money.

What's stopping them from applying to companies that pay competitive wages, provide excellent work benifits, and work from home options? There are a lot of companies out there that try and attract top talent with exuberant wage and signing bonuses. If they're really worth their salt, they'd get hired no problem when they apply to these companies. Otherwise, is it fair to say "the government is being greedy" because the gov is paying decent wages to folks that barely have any skills, just to do a job that can most likely be outsourced to ChatGPT? They should be thankful they still have a job in the first place, unlike a lot of people that lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
"we're standing here, for every worker in this country", all I can see is people the public sector demanding more wage.. in result raises the taxes. So the private sector once again loses.. thanks guys! We'll sit silently with our 1% increase because we have to 👍
First of all they're not increasing taxes to pay for this, unless you've seen something I haven't. Second, you might be forgetting that public servants are just middle-class employees too. We also have bills and mortgages, and guess what! We also pay those same taxes. Just because you don't get paid enough doesn't mean everyone else should too.

CRA workers should NOT be permitted to work from home. They have access to too much confidential information that leaves Canadians vulnerable with 1) a questionable home internet connection compared to the high quality internet security provided at the office 2) is confidentiality maintained in the 'work at home' environment (from other people in the home) 3) too many dropped calls with cell phone use by CRA workers (as we've all experienced these past 3 years). Work from home during the pandemic was a quick solution to a crisis and doesn't mean it should continue or that it's what's best for Canadians or their privacy. Same applies to OHIP workers (Provincial Gov’t).
High quality internet provided at the office ? eh boy you clearly don't work in Government buddy nor know how internet connection works apparently. People have to log off the Government system for 500 ish people meetings because it strains the system too much causing it to crash. Also in regards the confidential information, your name, address and phone number can be googled. Access to information is governed by "the need to know" policy. You openly talk about your job to anyone, which can again be googled to know the average salary or get a bracket of income for it, so exactly what do you think CRA has access to that can be so damaging ? Seems to me that you think employees have full access to everything, it is FAR from being the case. If I and a group of my colleagues decided to walk off the job (even for one extra day) I'd say the employer would be legally positioned to have us all out of work by the end of the day let alone getting into negotiations table! I cannot imagine how this'll feel for someone who runs a small business and needs desperately to file for much needed tax credits to keep their business afloat and now this.... a total DIRK move!
Extortion at its finest. high taxes non stop increase. Gas price , cost of living, housing. But federal workers got super coushy benefit and always wants more
My friend has 30 years in at pension division. She makes $25/hr they are asking for a 14% wage increase over 3 years which is $3.5 an hour. She lives in Ontario and anyone knows the cost of living has gone up like crazy where wages have stayed stagnate. Government MP's have no problem giving themselves raises. How about giving some to the people! Solidary Brothers and Sisters from Alberta!
Whatever the settlement amounts to when completed will set a new higher than current private sector raises and benefits and will set new standards that the private sector cannot afford! This is so wrong!
According to StatCan, a government agency full of PSAC that collects statistics, these 155,000 workers with the Public Service Alliance of Canada are mostly women making what StatCan would call an average salary of $40,000 to $65,000 per year. In addition to retro pay increase for 3 years they desire remote work, benefit for Indigenous language, extra pay for Veterans Affairs case workers and shift premiums. So this is supposed to be a negotiation, correct? We know their major demands however we do not know what they will give up. It is a negotiation so items must be taken away to achieve new demands. How about having to work more years before full pension and receiving less for retiring early? Perhaps no sick days for the remote workers who will be working from their beds. Fewer paid stat holidays? Maybe cut some benefits and have less paid vacation. It is a negotiation so start negotiating.
Why are we asking questions to side track the systemic problems surrounding wage slavery? They should take as long as they need to strike in order to get the above minimum and the appropriate living wage they deserve settled. So everyone's lives is on pause. So what, first world problems. I thought civil servants get paid really well and have great benefits already. But I'd they have new demands to meet the times, so be it, let then tame as long as they need. Why are we stressing out and trying to force them to go back to work asap? It's their right. Imagine of artists and musicians were able to go on strike? They are gig workers and maybe get paid 80 dollars a week. No benefits and pay higher taxes. #ubi now, create your own jobs, work less, spend more time with loved ones and build stronger communities. Let ai do all the monotonous work already.
when you run a high tax tyranny, you have to spend heavy on media, education, and govt workers to maintain order and control....a facade of freedom and democracy isnt cheap
@ghadsara They blame public servants because they probably screwed up somewhere and were either refused benefits or owe money to the government. How much is the government saving by not paying salaries? The longer the government can make this last, the better it will sit on a huge financial surplus.
@@asmith8947 unfortunately it’s not that simple… the amount they will have to spend hiring contractors or casual employees to do all the work that piled up that still has to be done…. It will outweigh any money saved from the time striking. Especially since at best the contractors tend to take a while to understand what they are doing, at worst they make a giant mess and then leave and then it’s even more work for the employees. There are legit reasons these people are stressed out.
Tell me any employer anywhere that pays a premium for an employee to work the last hour of their shift. It is as it has always been. Work for the federal government and retire for life
For my self i don’t even like union, they take so much out of you check every month, plus you paying your tax, the more you make the less will be by the end of the year.Good luck!
I’m so glad to see many supports from commenters. This strike looks to me very symbolic and important cause absolute majority of people in Canada got their wage reduced and their livelihood threatened due to current inflation while a minority of people got and are getting whatever they want. And worst thing is that that minority of people with power and money are the ones who caused current inflation and they are the ones who get most of profits out of it. Therefore, this strike is a first strike back by ordinary people like us at those privileged few with power and money. On top of it, in current difficult time, remote work is a very effective way to save money and to get work-life balance for better personal and family lives. Thus this has to be considered as basic right for workers.
They couldn't. It was mandated. The union can't override the law. They can negotiate. They tried, but they could not succeed in every battle. Refusing vaccination was a choice that people knew would lead to unpaid leave. Not saying it was right, but that was beyond the union's scope.
.. Anyway, I'm 73 and all my income has come from OAS, GIS and CCP, since I turned 65. I'm below the poverty level because I was born crippled. .. In the month of March, my OAS check dropped by $70. The probably is most government departments are over staffed but getting rid of employees starts lawsuits. A lot of these people are doing jobs that were hands on 10 years ago but a computer does it now.
Why now? And, who is driving the union side? Federal workers I’ve talked with have had limited to no information on what is going on at the table, on their behalf, or any vote/voice on the current state of affairs.
Lol

Stay solid PSAC.
so when inflation subsides, these raises can be recinded? works both ways....
Well said
Give them all a pay cut to where they are making what they deserve...about 50% cut.
Solution to the problem, just peg their wages to inflation going forward, no need to negotiate for "better" wages.

Fewer paid stat holidays? Maybe cut some benefits and have less paid vacation. It is a negotiation so start negotiating.
Why are we asking questions to side track the systemic problems surrounding wage slavery? This strike looks to me very symbolic and important cause absolute majority of people in Canada got their wage reduced and their livelihood threatened due to current inflation while a minority of people got and are getting whatever they want. And worst thing is that that minority of people with power and money are the ones who caused current inflation and they are the ones who get most of profits out of it. Therefore, this strike is a first strike back by ordinary people like us at those privileged few with power and money.
