I think some of the commenters should be less angry at public service workers and more angry at MPs. MPs have been giving themselves wages increases at higher rates than inflation and higher rates than the union is asking for, which is lower than inflation.

PSAC is asking for 4.5% after a year of 10% inflation? That is awfully generous of them. If I could strike for 10%, I would. Anyone paying rent, or had a mortgage come up for renewal, or watched food prices keep climbing to heights unseen. And then there is gas.. 70c a litre just a few years ago, almost $1.70 today?
4.5% does not cover the damage done. It is still a pay cut.

Canadians will say government workers are out of touch or not the right time for an increase. Good times, recession, pandemic, basically there is never a good time to ask for a raise, except look at the last 10 years of Canadian average increases, they are higher than government workers. While Canadians got 2.5%-3.5%, governments at the federal level got 1.5%. We would have probably gone on strike last contract, but it wasn't the right time due to the pandemic. That excuse is over.
Today, government just offered green energy incentives of $13 Billion, but you don't have $ 1 billion over 3 years? Really.

Some of these comments here are wild. A large percentage of these employees are University graduates with a ton of job experience and they're literally asking for a raise to ALMOST match inflation. That's not asking very much at all.
Everyone knows that there are pros and cons to working for the government and a competitive living wage has ALWAYS been one of them. We are all taught that government jobs will pay well/offer good benefits and as soon as you change that, no one of quality will continue to want to work for the government. Since Covid, there has been a serious reduction in the quality of services that we receive PRIVATELY (employers are having a hard time maintaining quality staff). I don't think we want to start experiencing that drop in the public sector as well. These aren't the politicians who are making six figures (none of them do, look it up). These are your middle-class neighbours who push papers, work in prisons and government buildings. They don't consistently strike (last 20 years) and they are simply fed up.
While I will concede that none of them are experiencing TRUE poverty; the fact that they are unable to be approved for mortgages or afford basic amenities should be extremely concerning to people. Government employment should be a high standard (it is) and it should be compensated accordingly (it currently isn't). It's as simple as that. You can hate the government and still think that they should pay their employees fairly.
To those of you who think 'they make enough already, they're fine': you are truly cowards in my opinion. You would let the government not pay them a contract while the prices of everything around them skyrocket. You support Trudeau pushing around his citizens and expecting them to take less than what is fair and less than what Canada has always offered. That may be fine for you, which is why you are not a coworker of the people on the picket lines yet remain critical and arguably jealous of them from afar.
    Stay solid PSAC.

I agree to retain competent employees you must pay accordingly. I’ve heard number from 13% pay increase to 47%. What’s fact I don’t know. And as we go to a more computer based process sure going to the office may not be the biggest deal. But as a tax payer why not sell the building and make them all work from home. Office equipment is on the employee. Just like tool costs are on the mechanics, plumber etc. they already get dental and a few other perks which is more then the private sector gets. I just think is bad timing to get the publics suport things like passports finally open up and now we the people pay for it double over. Also the union never missed a pay check like some private sector workers.

CRA workers should NOT be permitted to work from home. They have access to too much confidential information that leaves Canadians vulnerable with 1) a questionable home internet connection compared to the high quality internet security provided at the office 2) is confidentiality maintained in the 'work at home' environment (from other people in the home) 3) too many dropped calls with cell phone use by CRA workers (as we've all experienced these past 3 years). Work from home during the pandemic was a quick solution to a crisis and doesn't mean it should continue or that it's what's best for Canadians or their privacy. Same applies to OHIP workers (Provincial Gov’t).

High quality internet provided at the office ? eh boy you clearly don't work in Government buddy nor know how internet connection works apparently. People have to log off the Government system for 500 ish people meetings because it strains the system too much causing it to crash.
Also in regards the confidential information, your name, address and phone number can be googled. Access to information is governed by "the need to know" policy. You openly talk about your job to anyone, which can again be googled to know the average salary or get a bracket of income for it, so exactly what do you think CRA has access to that can be so damaging ?
Seems to me that you think employees have full access to everything, it is FAR from being the case. The Government of Canada is an extremely risk averse entity, so much that GoC would make your average accountant look like an hardcore gambler.

    4. Legislation will only cause further grief at the negotiating table and will discourage workers, maybe at the detriment of canadians.

In addition to retro pay increase for 3 years they desire remote work, benefit for Indigenous language, extra pay for Veterans Affairs case workers and shift premiums.
So this is supposed to be a negotiation, correct? We know their major demands however we do not know what they will give up. It is a negotiation so items must be taken away to achieve new demands. How about having to work more years before full pension and receiving less for retiring early? Perhaps no sick days for the remote workers who will be working from their beds. Fewer paid stat holidays? Maybe cut some benefits and have less paid vacation. It is a negotiation so start negotiating.

This strike looks to me very symbolic and important cause absolute majority of people in Canada got their wage reduced and their livelihood threatened due to current inflation while a minority of people got and are getting whatever they want. And worst thing is that that minority of people with power and money are the ones who caused current inflation and they are the ones who get most of profits out of it. Therefore, this strike is a first strike back by ordinary people like us at those privileged few with power and money. On top of it, in current difficult time, remote work is a very effective way to save money and to get work-life balance for better personal and family lives. Thus this has to be considered as basic right for workers.
