Thank you, Swamiji. I started to go to Sanskrit classes, because I'm interested in languages. This led me to studying the Bhagavad Gita and to my spiritual practices. ये यथा मां प्रपद्यन्ते तांस्तथैव भजाम्यहम् । मम वर्त्मानुवर्तन्ते मनुष्याः पार्थ सर्वशः ॥४.११॥
The member of Gul Mohar Society apparently doesn’t know that Sanyasi is also part of the society and alive to what happens in it. The example of what’s known as Revolt of Monks , in vernacular सन्याशाचे बंड , in erstwhile Bengal province against British to sided with Muslim ruler of the day who was harassing populace. Very famous novel and movie आनंदमठ is based on this incident. Similar , though not exactly same , is the Order of Nagas established by Adi Shankara who ordained them to protect Sanatana against invading hordes. Naga sect have laid down their lives in protecting holy places like Kashi. So Sanyasi taking part in worldly affairs selflessly for greater good is not uncommon.
Who decides the results of our karma! Certainly not us. Our thought of karma as good or bad may not even hold water in the order of universe. We go about our life according to our sense of right and wrong and leave the rest to the unknown. So, is it not unreasonable to calculate, add or subtract when you do not even know the number. I am the doer only. It is not for me to ask why or how it plays out in my life. Is my understanding reasonable?
I was intrigued by your comment. Playing devil’s advocate, I offer the following opinion based on my understanding of your position. First, from the perspective of reasoned logic, the belief expressed through the assertion “I am a doer only” is untenable. Logically, if I am a “doer only” it implies that I cannot be a non-doer, e.g., a knower. However, in asserting that “I am a doer only”, I must concede that I am also a knower of that which I assert. This presents a logical contradiction. Second, viewed from an emotional or psychological perspective, the belief expressed as “I am a doer only” is problematic. Consider, for instance, a bedridden ALS patient forced into a vegetative bedridden existence with no ability to eat, speak, and move. Imagine the emotional devastation that the belief “I am a doer only” could wreak on such a person as they grapple with the fact that all they can “do” is limited to what their mental faculty allows them to cognize and not much else. Arguably, they would suffer from a sense of utter insignificance. Now, consider a healthy person who saves a suicidal individual from jumping in front of an oncoming bus. Suppose this suicidal individual goes on a murderous rampage the next day killing several innocent children before taking their own life. How would the belief “I am a doer only” prevent the savior from suffering remorse in this situation? As I see it, Advaita Vedanta informs us that the belief “I am a doer” does not free us from suffering. On the contrary, it perpetuates suffering.
I think Dr. Radhika is confused between the karma and Karmafal. Treating patient is of course karma is like experiment and you wait for the outcome. The patient getting better or worse is not a fal but is the outcome of your intervention. Karmafal is what you get for treating the patient and you give up that.. May be I am wrong but this is my understanding. Om Shanti.
