It's black like ABS, but it feels mor like a plastic. I have always used Heavy Duty PVC glue without any issues.

Does the pipe from the drain get filled with muck?

No, the 4" pipe has a nice consistent flow through it, passing any debris straight to the filter tank. The lid on the drain sits about an inch off of the bottom liner, so it keeps out larger objects. You will have a problem if you allow small gravel to get into it, but it can be flushed out, or blown out of needed.

What if a little gravel get in the drain ? I dont have gravel in my pond but some comes in from the waterfall and edging i was wanting to add a bottom drain

The lid on the top of the bottom drain is less than an inch high off the top of the liner. So, only small debris can get into the drain. Simply, don't use any small gravel in or around your pond. Any larger debris or rocks will stay around the outside if the lid on the drain, and can be removed with a net.

I would like to have 2 drains but only want a 3,000 are 4,000 gallon pump because i already have 13,000 going trough the skimer should i use 3" drains worried want be enough suction for 2 drains

I don't like 3" drains, as many years ago (20-25 years ago) they were common, and I used them several times. They are definitely smaller in diameter and are more prone to clogging with debris. Once I started using 4" drains, I never went back and had far fewer problems. Two drains would still work for you rather than one. Keep in mind that in a gravity fed system, you are not actually "sucking" or pulling the water from the bottom drains. The water simply flows in with a constant and gentle "pull". So yes, one drain would "pull" more than two, but you still would get nice waterflow through each one, helping to circulate water better if the drains are set a good distance apart from each other. One strong suggestion is to have a 4" PVC gate valve on each. That not only can be used to shut off the waterflow to your filters etc., but also allow you to close one or the other periodically to force the total waterflow through one drain or the other to "flush it out" if needed.

This is what I use. I get mine from my local pond store, who gets them for me, but this drain from AZ Ponds is the same thing.
