Dan pull the mares tail and put it all into a container and fill it with water, after two weeks take a cup of the water in a can and water it on your garden as liquid fertilizer , it works, then keep topping up with the mates tail and water, ps keep a lid on the container.
It's a sluggy year. They say it's because of how wet it was last year, I've never seen anything like it before so might well be true. I'm finding snails everywhere, not seen too much damage yet but the buggers are definitely very numerous for May.
It’s crazy how everything has gone from too much rain to having to water regularly. My outdoor tomatoes have been mullered but slugs so I’ll have to redo and replace with spares. Lots on the go Dan and looking good. Flea beetle maybe 😢😢. Have a super weekend, Ali 🌞🇨🇦
I find mares tail waits for years until the land is flooded or we have a torrential rainy spring like this one. Then they go partly dormant in dry years. Keep us informed in future if the injections work pls
All looking good Dan 👍 Everything is flying along with the nice weather we're having at the moment 🌱 I'm not sure if you've done this already, but have you ever thought about puttung up a trail cam to see what comes into your plot when you're not there? Possibly see what's eating the plants, if it's not the slugs 🤔 Would be a good video 🙂
Theslugs crawl off, hids and die new slug pellets don't leave dead slugs and snails. After eating the pellets the slugs crawl away, stop feeding and die so they don't stay on the surface of the soil, hence you won't see them. Hoep that explains for you. Happy gardening 🙂
The comments have already answered your concerns, I had some mares tail at home and kept pulling it and it ended up dying eventually. No sunlight no life. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
Don't get me started on slugs, Dan, having a right go at my lettuce at the moment, coming out alot earlier in evening too, so I send what I can flying.
Hey Dan! I am having the same issues here in Pennsylvania. My pepper plants are all wholes, cukes are almost totally eaten. I have seen the slugs and the slime tracks. Not sure what to do. Guess I will search RUclips for solution, lol.
Just a thought…..Mares tail has quite a thick waxy cuticle making it tough for weed killer to break through. I wonder if crushing the stem or leaves with pliers then applying weedkiller would be effective? Laborious I know, but may be worth it.
I don’t know if you have them in the UK, but earwigs and pill/sow bugs do that. In Canada, last year the sow/pill bugs just decimated the gardens. Year before was earwigs. It’s a problem exasperated by mulch.
Just identified the pest and it's the Willowherb beetle Thankfully it only feeds on Willow Herb which is a pest weed anyway, so not a problem. Cheers Dan 😊
Tiny little holes sound like flea beetles. Is there a farm close by growing rapeseed or other brassica this year or last? Be careful with your brassicas because flea beetles will strip them bare if they are young and tender. You need a very fine mesh to keep them off your plants. Couple of years ago all my brassica seedlings got eaten completely and I had no idea what was causing it.
What kind of slug pellets are you using Dan? The old metaldehyde ones that are no longer available or the replacement iron phosphate ones? Just wondering because I read that the old ones would kill the slugs there and then as they ate but the iron phosphate ones take a while so the slugs eats then wanders off and dies out of sight hours later. So maybe it's that? I've been removing slugs off my sweet peas in the back garden every night. Absolute nightmare. One night there was around 30 of them. Hopefully getting them more under control now at home but at the plot can't really do much other than put a few slug pellets down.
To be honest I'm using the last few old metaldehyde ones I have. Please don't hate me😅 That's why I don't understand why there is no sign of casualties. Cheers Dan 😊
@@Allotment-diaryUk Lol. It's only illegal to sell it, not use it. But if the old stuff that actually worked isn't working then we all might have a bit of a problem.
@@nitelite78 iIt's llegal to sell AND use metaldehyde products. I use the new pellets, used coffee grounds, bran, beer traps and nemaslug. Some times all at once! Still have slugs! There's an awful lot of them this year.
I found a dead badger on my plot most likey from eating poisoned slugs also a dead kestrel most likley from eating piosioned rats then you eat poisoned vegetables please stop I have a few tips as a 3 year old helping my granddad on his plot I noticed slugs and snails did not live on the bramble and nettle patch so for 50 years ive been chopping up brambles and nettles and use as a mulch all around after sowing also they don't like dry ground so I water through a pipe happy gardening Richardx
😃🎉 Excellent
I subscribed to your channel 🙏

Flea Beetles 🪲
Yep.
They are rosebay flea beetles.
Just identified them and they only attack the weeds so happy days.
Cheers Dan 😊
@@Allotment-diaryUk Rosebay flea beetle will steal the wheels off your car. Beware.

Just realised they are Rosebay flea beetle and don't attack much else.
Cheers Dan 😊

I boil kettle and use remains on weeds not in used beds

I haven't seen any slugs or snail evidence but I must be that.
Having said that I'm not up there after dark.
Cheers Dan 😊
@@Allotment-diaryUk Try a beer trap - you get to see the bodies so know you've got the culprits.
Slugs don't eat onions and generally avoid alliums. The only other thing that could get to your shallots under the mesh would be posh vegetarian mice.
We are all having trouble with slugs i don't think the new slug pellets work properly

I've done a test by painting neat glyphosate on some which is about 50x stronger than spraying.
So we'll see how that gets on.
Cheers Dan
Hey mate what carrot verity are those
little holes in plants are caused by the flea beetle.
the holes? Leaf Miner?

I'm overrun with woodlice and am pretty confident that's what's doing the same thing to most of my stuff.

I've just realised that they are Willow Herb beetles.
And thankfully they only seem to attack that crop which Is a weed anyway
Cheers Dan 😊
Yep unfortunately you got flea beetle not a lot you can do about that but once the seedling get bigger they be fine
👍👍
Possibly mice or hats had the lettuce. They eat the slug pellets too! They eat them all like blue popcorn 🙈and then they eat the plants 😢

Red Campion.
Apparently wd40 works on the mares tail, thankfully we dont have it just the dreaded bindweed 🤦🏻♀️
the damage on your weeds is done by flea beetle i got the same thing going on over here in germany this year
👍
😂😂if you were a slug wouldn’t you eat lettuce instead of pellets, could be snails 🐌
