Symptoms include your check engine light coming on and your vehicle goes nuts or falls flat on its face.
- Engine systems fault
- DSC not available
- Parkbrake fault
... plus it wont change gear, and engine speed is limited.
The currently recommended solution is to replace the entire throttle body, but I sorted mine out with only a TPS replacement (it is cheaper, and involves disconnecting fewer components).
The part number is 198500-3300, and it can be obtained online for a very reasonable price. It's shared with other Jaguar models.

These are the instructions I followed, except for finding better success in disconnecting the battery overnight instead of a quick 30 seconds.

Replacement TPS fasteners are M4 0.7 10mm. I just grabbed some hex cap head screws from the hardware store and threw the stupid 5 points in the trash.
After market TPS for 2004-on XJ8 are indeed junk. I tried one and it was flaky to say the least. So I cleaned the OEM TPS with some spray electronics cleaner; just a mist. I rotated the wiper in the TPS a few times then sprayed again with the EC. Using canned air I gave the TPS a couple of quick blast to ensure the EC had evaporated. Using an extension cable I was able to adjust the idle speed I needed. It was a successful fix. Get the TPS off the throttle body is a PITA. Like other said, go to a hardware store and get the right hex screws for down the road adjustment as needed.
I bought a new intake tube off Ebay and it fixed all my problems.
Good job on the fix. Did you have the same code and symptoms I had?
UPDATE: For me this was a temporary fix it seems. Approx. 5,000 miles after I did this, I disconnected the battery to fix something else and this code came back. I ended up buying a Jaguar throttle body with an integrated sensor for ~$250 versus this sensor that cost ~$25.
The original one lasted 177,000 miles.
Problem solved after you bought new throttle?thanks
Yes, the new throttle body fixed it.
Where you get them and this applies to jaguar vanden plas 1997?
@@anticristony sorry for the late reply. I found the throttle body on eBay. There was a dealership selling them.
Hey good brother, i really appreciate your expertise, i have an 2005 xk8 with a P2118 code, can you tell me which fuse box holds the throttle motor fuse , i know it's a 30, plz help...
These Jags are very sensitive to air leaks, you'll think your engine is blown the way it will run and it ends up just being some random little hose you forgot to reconnect 😆
What is the problem of my nissan tiida? Is idle high at 2000 rpm.
If i pull throttle body sensor idle goes down
What's the reset procedure for a 2005 jaguar s-type after reinstalling the throttle body and throttle position sensor?
Did you ever figure it out?
My 2011 XJL since its winter outside wants to give me this issue, dash lights up with errors saying each system is offline before it loses all power and dies, was wondering if just changing the sensor would fix it, I have also seen people talk about the wiring on the sensors plug gets pulled out over time causing it.
There is. Two wire connector for the throttle body motor. They disintegrate over time and will simply crumble into pieces. The replacement female half is WPT-1269 with pigtails. On line for 15$. Mine came with two crimp splices but decided to solder the pigtails to the OEM wiring still in the harness. Each individual splice was covered with heat shrink then both splices were covered with a larger piece of shrink. I snugged everything neatly with zip ties and my on-off again fixed my idle problem , the CEL and a DSC alerts on the dash.
Hey you tell us what is the little plug you took off I know the throttle body position sensor
What is the smaller one
At approx 2:30? That's for the throttle plate. The connection for the motor that opens & closes the throttle
Did your car slam into Drive mode? Same problem with my XJ8
It kicked into fail-safe mode, stuck on 3rd gear and wouldn't shift up or down. And I think the RPM was limited too. It's been quite a while
Do you still own the car? I have a 2006 Vanden Plas that goes into ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT Limp mode. I can't drive above 10mph and does not shuft transmission. RPM stays stuck at around 1000. The OBD only shows one code i.e. P2135. Need help :(
@@lodashnotebook5390 I don't have it anymore. I sold it, but I figured the videos should still stay up if they can help somebody.
I don't know what mileage you have, but as I posted in the update, just replace the throttle body. Buy an original Jaguar unit and save yourself the trouble of doing it twice
@@EdBwoy why did you sell it? I got a cheap 90 buck OEM from a donor Jag w/ about 70k miles on the clock off eBay. If the problem gets resolved, I'll but the 300 buck new one.
@@lodashnotebook5390 it was time for a change. I went back to cars that are a little more fun to drive, with more modern amenities.
Hello friend, we have a bumper v8 1999 I speak of Brazil here we use gasoline with 28% of alcohol is...
I have been having engine system fault and gearbox fault pop up. Do you the it’s the throttle body?
I would hate to speculate and lead you the wrong path, but it soes seem like the throttle body will need attention at some point around the 175,000 mile mark.
However, I had a check engine light with the trouble code to guide me.
You can weigh the option of taking it to Jaguar for diagnosis, or just replace the TB as a preventive maintenance step.
@@EdBwoy i have 134 thousand miles on it and my battery had died but it still had a little juice left and I was able to turn the key over and I noticed that was popping up and basically ever since I changed the battery it has seemed to do it and it just gets worse
Would be about same for stype?
I believe so. As long as it is the V8, then it should be very similar
I have a 2004 Jaguar XJ8 Vdp And I smell gas when my car is idle , and when I drive , my car jerks when accelerating , and the rpm's go up and down by like .5rpm when it does jerk.
I am curious, did your service engine light come on with a readable code?
@@EdBwoy did you have any symptoms of your throttle position sensor not working? For instance my rpms fluctuate up and down while driving. Do you think that could be the throttle position sensor?
@@LifeOnInCline yes, immediately preceding my limp mode fits, the RPMs fluctuated in city driving. The the gearbox warning would follow
@@EdBwoy I really appreciate it man! Hope all is well

I am sorry I missed your message earlier. Sometimes RUclips does not give me notifications immediately.
I hope you were able to fix the car.
fuck i envy handy ppl like you :)
Haha. Thank you, very much.
What a bad camera brother, it makes so annoying to watch the video…. Sorry to say, but it is bad, it damage the whole experience to watch and your good intentions of making the video. Thanks anyway.
