Fans wanted Robert Plant continue to do zeppelin type of music. He clearly wanted to do something else himself. But if you put aside the expectations he has made lots of really good music in his solo career.

Yeah. He also changed his sound up a lot. His debut solo album Pictures at Eleven is more hard rock oriented. Then he started to move into more pop arrangements.

Probably my most favorite solo song from any of the members of Led Zep, and I've loved this for years. Found out it is on the radio in GTA V, and it is very fitting. Led Zeppelin is one of my favorite bands of all time. Thank God his solo stuff doesn't sound like Zep. He grew up. He expanded his musical horizons. And he still is. There is a reason why he is still creating new music 40 years after Bonzo's death. It's because it never sounded like Led Zeppelin. Even his take on Zep tunes is refreshing. Great artist! Then and now and everywhere in between.

In his 80s albums, Robert Plant reacted against any expectations for him to continue the Led Zeppelin sound. He also felt uncomfortable about dwelling on the past for obvious reasons. But since around 1990, he has added Zeppelinesque elements to his varied and very eclectic mix. I think his finest solo material has been in the last 15 years.

B ig log is a metaphor for a truckers log book. Plant's lyrics were often influenced by the books of J.R.R. Tolkien. "Big Log" is a mythical, extended metaphor for a lost love: "My love is in league with the freeway... My love is the miles and the waiting." A "big log" is common lingo of tractor trailer drivers. It is the book in which their road hours are logged, therefore the connection between the road and love and the countless hours we all log on both. c) Songfacts All truckers love their work no matter how theu will say they despise it.

Great old track, thanks for posting! The other huge commercial hit from from this album was In the Mood, a very solid track as well. Thru with the Two Step is probably one of his best solo songs, but then i still vibe with this whole album on the regular, timeless stuff. Phil Collins did most of the drums on this album.
Check out Burning Down One Side from his first studio album Pictures at Eleven too, it had much more of a Zeppelin vibe to it, if you're looking for that. That track is pure fire and I remember thinking it must have been previously unreleased Zeppelin first time I heard it.
Look into The Honeydrippers EP too. He covered a few old swing songs with a full brass ensemble, every single one was fantastic and made you want to move. Young Boy Blues, I Get a Thrill, and Sea of Love got tons of airtime when RP covered them.
His album Raising Sand with Allison Krauss was unbelievable as well, and got all kinds of accolades. Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us and Killing the Blues were especially poignant. Their voices harmonizing together are haunting, just perfect. Kind of like Layne and Jerry, but better! Be careful though, you can't listen to just one song off either of these albums. Both will keep you coming back more. Peace!

Check out Tall, Cool One....You’d like it. Robert played with all the eighties stuff....all the new toys....he has often said he was busy “going up his own rectum”. HOWVER....He was devastated by the loss of John, and dealt with his grief by immersing himself in music. He was only 32, and ambitious...but he felt that he had to distance himself as much as possible from the Rock God persona that he had crafted with Zeppelin. He felt that the fans were always trying to suck him back into that vortex. So...after a few years....by 1988 or so...he became more secure on his new path and began to sample and “cover” Zeppelin songs with his new band. He has changed musical direction multiple times in his 40 year career...wherever his insatiable musical curiosity and muse has led him. Some gorgeous songs along the way.....I hope you try more out.

Something to think about. Robert was coming out of the unforeseen end of Led Zep. he played for 12+ years with the greatest drummer and one of a handful of the greatest guitar players of all time. If he had tried to recreate Zep whichever drummer and guitarist would be doomed by the unfair comparisons to Bonham and Page. I think he was looking for something different. I like his first two solo albums quite a lot. As for Big Log I do like it as well. I love the simplistic clean sound of the guitar (Robbie Blunt). I was thinking of laying in a hammock, soft breeze a cold beer and my headphones. I do prefer the first album "Pictures At Eleven" . It was intentional that his early solo work didn't sound like Zeppelin, although there are certain elements that are similar and Robert Plant's voice is instantly recognizable. He wanted to create his own thing separate from his former band, to the point that for the first several years, he didn't even perform Zeppelin songs live, although in later years he did and still does

I think you are suffering from a paradigm. This is pure Robert Plant without Zep. He is older and more mellow but still brings the mystical qualities he is known for. The vocals are astounding. Remember, this is pre autotune era sound. Every note had to be hit by the singer to produce a great vocalist album. The guitar is subdued compared to rock but very crisp and elegant. Yes, some pop percussion elements are introduced, but you have to shake off your rockin' expectations and listen to the simplicity and beauty of the rhythm of the whole album. In the Mood is another great song on this album and then branch out into his other solo work and work with the Honey Drippers.

There are many reasons why Plant didn't want to return to Zep. As a solo artist he can sing songs in a style that doesn't damage his vocal chords. His friend Roger Daltrey said Plant knows he can't manage the Zep songs any more. I also think things got too painful and he wanted to get away from that situation. At the Kennedy centre he was the one that cried at the memories when he was listening to Heart play 'Stairway to Heaven', yet previously he had disparaged it as 'that wedding song' and said it was not among his favourite Led Zeppelin songs. I find he goes too far in attacking what he did with Led Zep but I understand he doesn't want to live in nostalgia and regret. He implies that his front man style with Led Zep was an act and he doesn't want to act that way any more and probably doesn't think it's appropriate as his age. They are heading for their 80s now and should be cut some slack rather than being pressured to continue as Led Zep.

Good song & make sure you check out the 'Official Video Remastered' for it. Don't expect Zeppelin sounding songs with Plant's solo stuff, it's totally different music. Closest he ever got is probably the song 'Slow Dancer' from Pictures at Eleven. The late Cozy Powell on drums on that song. I seen a show on the Principle of Moments Tour in 1983, with Phil Collins on drums. Some more cool Plant songs:
    Fat Lip
    Slow Dancer
    Like I've Never Been Gone
    Far Post
    Other Arms
    In The Mood
    Horizontal Departure (very cool song)
    Turnaround
    Trouble Your Money
    Sixes and Sevens
    Little By Little (Long Version)
    The Way I Feel
    Ship of Fools
