The name was used for the top models in Ford's full-size range from 1958 until 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with "500" and "500/XL" denoting the higher series. The Galaxie 500/LTD was introduced for 1965 followed by the Galaxie 500 7-Litre for 1966. The Galaxie 500 prefix was dropped from the LTD in 1966, and from the XL in 1967;[2] however the basic series structuring levels were maintained. The "regular" Galaxie 500 continued below the LTD as Ford's mid-level full-size model from 1965 until its demise at the end of the 1974 model year.[3]:401-42
The Galaxie was the competitor to the high-volume full sized Chevrolet Impala.[4]
The similarly named Ford Galaxy is a large car/minivan available in the European market. The vehicle's name is believed to be derived from the original Ford Galaxie.

I have fond memories of driving my mother's 1965 Galaxy, white 2-door, blue interior, with the 289 V8. I went on many dates in high school in it and then took it to college.
Would be delighted to own any one of them.
I owned a 1962 and then a 1963 Galaxie, both 4-door sedans. The '62 had the 292 V8 and the '63 came with the 351 V8. Both great road cars, but living in New England, they each succumbed to rust over time. This video shows that in the 50's and through the early 70's, car companies made significant body changes from year to year. You could tell the model year of these cars at a glance. Unfortunately, today we have the standard jelly-bean shaped that makes it almost impossible to tell one model year from another as car companies retain basic body styles for many years. The basic designs are so homogeneous, it's even difficult to tell who the manufacturer is in some cases. My overall favorite Galaxie has to be the 1961 Starliner coupe. The roof line and huge rear window really compliments the rest of the body lines. I also think the door handles being integrated into the body trim (à la 61-63 Thunderbird) are a neat touch. The Galaxie only incorporated this for the 1961 model. I miss the old days...
Your 63 had a 352 fe not a 351 small block.
I was born in '65 in Los Angeles. Maybe when I was 4 or 5 really noticed the cars on the freeway and just stare at them. My favorite was the '59 Chevy with cat eyes. I could spot them a mile away. I can't imagine being 4 or 5 today and being interested in the cars because they are so boring and all look the same.
65 or 66 is my dream car
HOT MUSTARD - I gotta agree with ya! Very nice.
Hi John,
Just one note of caution- the '65s were infamous for much worse frame rust than the '66s. You may be safer and save a lot of repair & weld work if you start out with a 1966.
Good luck.
Good video. 64 through 68's are my favorite
Outstanding vid! I remember riding a Ford Galaxie 500 similar to the one at 7:25. Thank you for the vid.
Top shelf info and editing.!
Thanks for posting!!!!
I had a 1970 Galaxie 500 wagon, properly called the 'Country Sedan'
I loved that old wagon, your montage is beautiful and gives me hope of getting another one day.....
Thanks for wathing. I am very pleased.
Back in the 80’s when I got my drivers license, I had to drive my dad’s Ford Galaxy. Nightmare for a beginner driver. I felt like I was on both sides of the road. LOL!
Wonderful presentation!
My high school friend (mid 80s) had a '66 7 Litre car. Original 428 with a 4 spd, that car was fun.
I also drove a 1968 Galaxy. It was my first car.
Although created to compete saleswise with the Impala the Galaxie soon established both individual style and performance
Galaxies and Mustangs Oh Yes.
For me, It always seems to start hurting around circa 1972. Like Jeff Goldblum said in J2, At first, it all ooh ahhh, then later there's the running...and the screaming...lol.
65 black on black,......that's the one for me.
I'm brazilian. Our ford model was 1965 and it over in 1983 the same design from 1965. Gaxie. LTD and Landau.
6:19 is perfect.
Started out. As a top end offering but just dribbled down to a plain Jane low end offering suited for police cruisers or hack service with taxi companies same goes for Chevy Belair & Pontiac Catalina & Plymouth Fury
O mais luxuoso carro feito aquo jo Brasil!
In North Little Rock, Arkansas there use to be a dealership One Moore Ford I put out hand bill's for them after school in the 60's
The good old days, Gary. We all miss them. It's funny...I can still hear a George Benson-like studio singer on radio ads in the Spring of 1978 in Baltimore, where & when I was in 5th grade, singing, 'you'll go that extra MILE, at Hunt Valley Ford...'
I thought the 1967 model was the nicest. We had a pigeon egg blue Custom 500 I loved.
Nice video. Too bad it’s inaccurate and the captioning was incorrectly showing 2nd gen even after having shown 3rd gen, I guess a tipoh? And what you showed as a 1969 was actually a 1970, having skipped the 1969 model example altogether. But I like Galaxies so thanks for the effort.
Me gusta el carro
Just wondering if the generation listings were accurate. How can a 65-67 be second generation still if 60-64 is second generation?
I think the 1963 at 1:59 represents the peak of the marque.
You showed a '63 dash in the '61 section.
Magnific car! I like it so much! What about LTD and LTD II?
LTD II was an intermediate, a freshened model continuing the Torino frame. 1977 to 1979.
I love the 66' 7 Litre.
Some early models were outfitted with the 427 (R) not the easy build 428.
The LTD was simply an luxury themed upper level trim package
I prefer the 1966 "Jay Leno's Father" Edition. Objectively speaking, 1970-72 models kick the most ass.
Leno's is not an XL.
BTW, what is the name of the music at the start of the vid?
Hello. name of the music Arp_Bounce
Chrono Logy - Thank you!
1263 in a car show this summer 4:06 three Deuces 4-speed Factory car
in such a small period so radical change??? !!!
I got a 68 torino gt
I have a 1974
Very nice line up. Am I missing the V8 engine sizes? They had 289 302 351W 352,390 400,406,410,427,428,429,460. What is a 3.7L V8?
Hi Jay,
That '3.7' might be a mistake, as that would be 225 cubic inches.....or the exact size of the Chrysler Slant-6!!
Ford did offer the 250 cubic inch inline 'Big Six' as listed in the sales brochures for full-size Custom 500s and Galaxie 500s, but never LTDs or wagons, of course.
But for your background, in the truly dark days of 1979 to 1981, I think Ford offered a smaller-stroke version of the V-8 302, which worked out to be 255 cubic inch, purely as a concession to fuel economy.
No 410 FE mate, you're thinking Mercury Division 1966/67 only.
The 3.7 is the 223 milage maker straight 6. It was the base engine for the galaxie and fairlane in 1960. I have a 60 fairlane 2 door that originally had the straight 6. Now it has a roller windsor motor.
65 is the best.
Great video except for the highly annoying music . I had to turn the volume down . Wouldn't it be nice to watch all videos with NO music at all
The Gen 4s were essentially the LTD platform. Probably the worst of the bunch. The Gen 3s were awesome tho.
Whic County do u upload the videos? i am the owner of www.FunColic.com! Cause u upload also to my Website! Nice videos 👍
Thank.Now I am in Korea.Interesting Website
63 oh yea.
A 63 Galaxie XL 390 4-speed was my first car and my Dad bought a candy-apple red 67 390 XL off the showroom floor
How is a 73' worth more than a 72'.
For 73' we are talking government mandated, five mph bumpers going forward, until air bags became std.
I came here to identify a car used in several Perry Mason episodes 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 or 500XL convertable. They must have used the same footage of Mason exiting the car parked in the street and walking around the rear of the car in several episodes over several years because I've seen that more than once. Also, the episode that prompted me to actually look it up was from 1966. mystarcollectorcar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMGP6214.jpg www.motorcarstudio.com/vehicles/763/1962-ford-galaxie-500-xl-sunliner
