Fantastic ! I learned so much! Billy
This sounds full and bright now. Well done!🙏🏻
You're a tinkering gem & now so is that guitar!!
You are a guitar wizard
2 of my 6 Firefly guitars are 338's and the newest is a baritone 338. All modded and none have the original pickups.I love these guitars.
Good job! You should make pickups that could be easy to swap out. You could make a few bucks!
A couple of years ago I bought one of these in a kind of chocolate brown color. The hardware was serviceable, and the pickups were microsonic. I replaced all hardware and pickups with gold items.
The guitar now looks stunning, as the fit and finish and paint were excellent. The upgrades cost about $150.00, and the guitar sounds and plays very well now, and is a beautiful instrument.
exactly
Nice vid...I just got a used one...luckily,there was a nice TV Jones Powertron in the bridge, but I'm gonna swap out the neck...it has traditional poll pieces, but it's dull and VERY microphonic...bridge screws/saddles rattled like crazy,so I wrapped the screws with teflon tape and it's now fine...I'm considering changing the pots, switch, jack, and wiring...do you have any idea of the quality of those parts?...like pickups, they're usually a pretty weak link in inexpensive imports
My experience with these inexpensive imports is that ALL the hardware is lower grade. My take on the wiring, switch, jacks & pots is use then until they need to be replaced, unless you want the change the values to alter the tone. Bridges, tuners, and tailpieces are really the luck of the draw. Pickups ALL tend to be overwound, muddy sounding, and very microphonic likely caused by the "cover" usually not being wax potted. The good news, if the guitar itself is stable and plays well, the hardware can be changed over time.
@@jimdarrstoneshifterguitars2309 Thanks Jim...I have a feeling it uses low quality pots around the 300k range...I'm gonna throw in some good 500k's for better clarity and articulation...best part is I traded a pedal for it (a high end Reeves treble booster, but still a pedal! 😁)
@@rickya3877 Why do think they are possibly 300K pots???
@@jimdarrstoneshifterguitars2309 I have another import brand (SG style) that had 300K for humbuckers and it muffled the high end clarity in much the same way...I happen to have the exact TV Jones pickup in another guitar and there's quite a difference in clarity and definition...of course there are other variables involved
@@rickya3877 Based on what you observed, I would tend to agree. When you take the pots out you can easily measure them on a VOM. Keep in mind that a lot of these "OVERWOUND" pickups tend to display a muddy tone with lack of high-end clarity, articulation, and sparkle. Let us know what you find out...
Jim great positive change in sound. In essence you made a custom set of pup's. On my FFly, 2 yrs ago now, I changed everything except the tail piece and posts. Now it's great. I havs 90% of my work on my channel. Subbing you
The point i was trying to make is that for pennies the factory can produce excellent sounding pickups...it is all matter of tweaking the formula ever so slightly
@@jimdarrstoneshifterguitars2309
You made that point to very well sir. So many of the guitars I've gotten could have been just a little bit better for like you said pennies
@@jimdarrstoneshifterguitars2309 How can I get you to rewind some of mine? You offer any services on a website or similar?
@@grooooved Thinking of setting up a Reverb Shop for my own formulas. But will probably not be doing rewinds...too time consuming & problematic depending on the PUP's condition.
@@jimdarrstoneshifterguitars2309 Good idea - especially with your increasing youtube exposure, I think. I've got some new PRS Hollowbody SE pups I'm about to remove if you'd be interested in examining them for potential upgrading without obligation.
Hello,I enjoyed your take on the 338. I own a ff red 338. I have read the pickups were waxed. I'm glad that you have confirmed that. I'm gonna play as is for now. I just purchased a fflp. Really love it. Thanks again for your great reveiw. Jim k.
I've noticed that my 4 different FF338s had a lot of variability in hardware. I noticed this most specifically in bridges, but also that the pickups in the one FF338 that I ended up keeping has conventional adjustable pole pieces, which would indicate that they're different from the pickups that came in yours. I ended up raising mine up slightly to brighten the neck pickup a bit.
I think the hardware is really the luck of the draw!!! The hardware on this one seems fine to me...guess i got lucky.
@@jimdarrstoneshifterguitars2309 on my first one the bridge was so bad that the saddles didn't fit into the rails, and the screws weren't fully installed. I had to file the sides of the saddles and open the screw holes up. The next couple weee a different design with the wire retainer. My spalted one that I kept had the e-clip retainers like the original, but was much better made
Sounds great! What a differemce! Cant wait to swap mine out. They are also very microphonic
Let us know how the swap works out!
Thank you for such an in depth review of the guitar. I just received a FF338 last week and have been playing it. If I change anything it would be the tuners. I have an extra set of Kuson Deluxe from another guitar. The other thing I may do is swap out the humbuckers with some Toneriders, but wonder if you make and sell your pickups.
Man you know your stuff. I am a beginner but when I learn to play for real I'll be back.
Thanks
Why do you have to be so nit picky over a $200.00 guitar?
