Quinlan, I'm choking on my coffee. You are a mess! hahaha I love that you kept in almost eating that bug! LMBO Would love to see you cooking again to see how these turned out!
Forgaging for vegetables in Japan is something I am so jealous of since I can't do that here where I am. Thank you for sharing with us so we can be part of this experience :)
Bear in mind your safety..... 😅 Quinlan, appreciate your videos and your engagement with the community. As you work your way to your first 100K subscribers and beyond. I know it will be harder to acknowledged all the great comments. Keep up the great work 👍
Knew about your channel for a while but had never really watched your videos. Well that was quite a mistake! Your videos are soothing, you are great at talking and as I personally live in Tokyo, it's so nice to see so much nature. Japan is a beautiful country, thanks for showing it!
I'm new to this channel and wow, this was enchanting! I laughed when you said koshi abura is found in "just places like this" (as opposed to somewhere more picturesque) because it's quite lovely there, too. Looking forward to more adventures. :)
Welcome and thanks for watching! Haha, I guess I'm spoiled in terms of natural beauty and was comparing it to walking up a stream with little waterfalls everywhere.
Another amazing video! Your excitement and appreciation for nature is infectious. Thank you for sharing! Even through almost eating a bug, potentially running into a bear, and losing your car key you keep such a positive attitude. Love it!
I ate 山菜 at the ryokan of a yamabushi at mount Haguro at 出羽三山. I loved it but was baffled with the name and actually didn't realize they are actually foraged in the wild. This must just be so much fun. Sorry for your car keys.
You joke but ask some lady who was recently on the news and a bear got in her house because despite knowing bears went into her yard, she kept leaving her patio door open. Her two tiny dogs scared the bear out of the house. The bear politely walked around inside her house and didn't even touch anything.
Sansai, noted, I will try ordering that when I go to Japan, looks like fun foraging for wild vegetables, you probably have a sense of pride while eating them.
Imagine walking around the forest, collecting greens and all of a sudden a bear climbs down from a tree ! Now that is the content I subscribed for, Quinlan !
Love sansai! It's quite amazing how restaurants can fry up those fragile local herbs and vegetables into a tempura that is crunchy and retains the wonderful flavour of the veggies themselves. Really enjoy these foraging videos - learning lots!
I love your foraging videos, I find it so fascinating! Finding a guide to go foraging with would be an experience I'd love to have someday if I ever get to spend more time in Japan.
Dude, if this were in Japanese and without music, I could see this being used in one of those 心霊映像 summer compilations with a deep voiced narrator detailing how you missed the 幽霊 lurking nearby. But, its just a lovely dude with a sunny disposition looking for forest happiness.
05:19 "little bit too dense for me to see if he's still up there taking a nap" my thoughts: unless you fly your drone up there cuts to drone footage lol
Another beautiful video! You may want to think about Alaska to hike and forage. When you were going thru worrying about bears, I knew exactly how you felt. Ive left my bear spray home too many times also. I have to say, you made me laugh when you spit out the bug.
@@GoNorthJapan to me: a bear is a bear no matter where you are. I just think Alaska was one of the most beautiful places. Where you live almost brings me back there.
I always carry a gun in the north Georgia mountains/ Appalachian Trail because of bears and other animals. I understand that's not an option in Japan, but I wouldn't feel safe without one. Thanks for the video though bro, keep it up.
I would love to get a bear on camera!! There isn't really a bear sanctuary per say, but there is a small zoo that only houses bears in Akita. I think they do their best to treat them well, but it's very concrete and kind of depressing looking if you're used to nice spacious well-funded zoos. I have thought about showing it, but I'm afraid there would be a backlash from people that find it cruel to the bears just by the nature of how it appears. (Again, I think the staff at the facility are doing their best, but it really could use more funding.)
Wow, great footage! I couldn't quite get a good luck at the plants though. Not sure they are koshi abura, but I don't know why monkeys wouldn't eat it! Wish we had monkeys up here in Iwate!
You have definitely added "Foraging in Japan" to my bucket list! It looks so fun & rewarding! Also loved the energy of this video with how semi-chaotic it was!! Quinlan be like: imgur.com/gallery/aDviJp2
@4:40: "Billy! GET OUT OF THERE!" If you don't mind me asking, how do you make tempura? Maybe some of the "Tenpura masutā" here can can give you some pointers... @7:48, that looks a bit like a cyclamen but it isn't, do you know what it is? Quite nice (more of that please 😁)
The simple explanation of how to make tempura is to mix flour and water, dip something in that batter, and then put that in boiling oil for a short period of time. But if course doing it well is an art. The flower is an Asian fawnlily! It's called Katakuri in Japanese.
Thanks Quinlan! My thinking was that if you'd posted a more detailed description of your tempura method (type of flour/s, iced?, what source of carbonation etc) some of the expert cooks in your sub collective should have been able to spot areas of improvement and inspire you to become a one stop shop so to speak... Dumb idea 🙏 Your thinly-sliced-pork recipe sounds hard to beat, anyway. Thank you very much for the info on that fawnlily, I love that stuff... It turns out to be -endangered- threatened, so also great that you found it.
do you thank the kami of the forest for your pickings and their bounty? I admire your love of Japan and what it has to offer, and you know the terrain and what you desire, but you never mentioned if you offer your gratitude to the forest from which you gather this bounty..
Interesting. I don't do it in any ritualistic or formal manner, but I am generally filled with awe and gratitude when I'm out in wild places. And I do stop at shrines in these wild places and offer my gratitude there.
I had to google that. And it's apparently Itadori in Japanese. Yes- I have picked and eaten that! It's a bit of a pain as you have to boil and peel it, but supposedly it's really good for you. Doesn't taste bad either!
You bribe people with free fresh vegetables? I better learn how to make tempura... And go to Japan 😅 Ok Quinlan we need to get you a lanyard for your keys.
Nope... I just made some copies. So now I don't have a car key with the remote unlock function, but no big deal. (It was like $150 to get a new one and I'm poor right now so I'm just using normal manual keys for now.)
@@GoNorthJapan Sorry to hear that! hopefully a bear doesn't find it and tries to snatch your car for a joy ride next time you are in the area. Love your videos on foraging!

I like that you left in the bug part, that cracked me up. Mosquito season is about to begin in Atlantic Canada, so I'll be right there with you.
Alternative title for this video: Quinlan makes the best of a no-good-very-bad day. 😂
Hahahaha, I could probably give that title to a lot of days in 2020/21 ..

I spent the night at one of the shukubo at Mt. Haguro as well and ate their sansai meal too! So good!!
"Don't try this at home." SO WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH ALL THE BEARS IN MY HOUSE !?!

If I saw fresh bear scat, I would be out of there so fast.😃 Great scenery though!
Another lovely video! Just can't seem to get enough of Quinlan's adventures and the beauty of Japan!
Brilliant video Quinlan , really enjoyed your tips on foraging 👍
Sounds like the bears had the same idea 😅
I really like this kind of adventure ❤️
This is the channel i been loking for!!!
This is so cool, it’s been almost 10 years since I’ve been to Japan, I never even thought of doing something like this maybe next time 🤣
Like corn, grows on a stalk.
Your life is wonderful, just " Wow "
I miss Iwate
Amazing, only can imagine how delicious they are :D Waiting for more foraging videos :) Also, congrats getting in JNTO newsletter :D
Thanks for noticing!
Osaka and Saitama are great places to forage.
I am a citizen of Yamagata prefecture in the Tohoku region, but I have never picked vegetables in the mountains.
I recommend it!
Oh I love when you post these foraging videos! Can you do a video of how they are used in a dish?
Yes! I'll try to do one of those!

The thumbnail of this topic... seems to me to have a similar atmosphere to the movie “The Shining”...

Koshi Abura very interesting to know no name in English but not hard to remember wow looks yummy and smells aroma as you said.

Those are some nice shots of nature!

As soon as i ate koshiabura for the first time I’ve been wondering what kind of plant it is and how to harvest it. It is now my favorite vegetable 🤤
I actually just made koshi abura gyoza for the first time a few days ago. Filmed it, so hopefully will be able to publish a video on that soon!
this is nice
After watching this video, all of my neighbour trees started to look yummy...
It seems monkeys also like Koshi Abura! Kyde and Eric filmed them foraging on their recent bike trip: ruclips.net/video/AWc3fS6gyUQ/видео.html

There are dozens of different edible plants that people forage for here! I'd really recommend going with a local though!
