- As Jerry Nadeau wins his first Winston Cup race at Atlanta on November 20, 2000 ESPN says goodbye to its NASCAR coverage.
Have the tissues handy, even after seven years it will still bring you to tears.
We miss you Bob, Benny, and Ned
RIP Bob and Benny. Together, along with Ned Jarrett, they were the best NASCAR broadcast team in my opinion.
And also Kenny Rankin, whose 1977 song Groovin' was featured in the closing credits. BTW don't forget Eli Gold of TNN (now Paramount Network) and Ken Squier of CBS.
I think a lot of people will agree that without you Mr. Jenkins, there would have been no magic. Although Bob was not one to take all the credit in the world he along with BP and Ned Jarrett were described by some as having old friend's over for the race. That entire team played a part in getting fans to tune in each week. Bob Jenkins, Allen Bestwick, Mike Joy, Ken Squire, Bill Weber and countless others who handled the job of play by play whether you were a fan of their style or not, they all did their very best to tell the story each and every week. We will miss a story teller like Bob but we are all grateful for all the memories we have with him telling the story.
This hits so much different now. So sad to see such a legendary broadcaster in Bob Jenkins go. 😢
you planned your day on a sunday at 1 pm told my ex leave alone for 3 hours and we will go have dinner after the race sunday perfect afternoon was nascar how did they screw it up
When I learned of Bob Jenkins passing this morning, this is the first place I came. It’s a fantastic view of Bob and how much pride he took in his job. A consummate professional. Rest In Peace sir, thanks for the memories, and say hi to BP.
I did the same thing.
Just to know that this was the last time Ned, Benny, and Bob would commentate together was a saddening thing in my head before I even started watching this video. Ned retired (aside from a few one-off appearances), Benny unfortunately passed away in 2007 (but kept announcing until he was too sick), and Bob announced until he was diagnosed with, and eventually succumbed to, brain cancer in 2021 (retired from TV work in 2012 after his wife, Pam, became ill with cancer that spread to her brain, but worked the PA system at IMS until 2020). Bob is one of my inspirations to become a NASCAR announcer, and he's one of the greatest men to ever announce the sport. Also, as some saddening things, this was Jerry Nadeau's only win in the Winston Cup series before he got injured three years later, the final race that Dale Earnhardt, Sr. fully completed before his death a little less than three months later, and the last race Darrell Waltrip competed in before he retired. Definitely a saddening video, and even more saddening with everything behind it...
I think that's terrible this was Jeremy nadeau first and last Winston cup win and I think that's horrible this was the last time Benny Parsons, Ned Jarrett and Bob Jenkins were together
@@quentinparhiala9415 and Now Bob Jenkins is Gone (1948-2021)
@@DupontandLowesWarrior I saw a video on youtube about that today and it's sad that Bob Jenkins died (1948-2021)
And now Bob has passed at just 73, joining his buddy Benny in Heaven.
Very true
After all these years and all the other combinations I've heard call races since this one, there is no doubt in my mind that Bob, Ned and Benny are the best the sport has ever had. Brings a tear to my eye...
One of the best booths in any sport, not just NASCAR.
@@zlinedavid Agree. ESPN and ABC telecasts were my favourite to watch back in the day. No fluff trying to dazzle everyone with a bunch of BS. Boogity Boogity Boogity? Please... I love DW but I always cringed when he did that. Seemed so juvenile.

Rest in Peace Bob Jenkins, we lost a true motorsports icon today.
the day the original ESPN broadcast ended, and the newer ones wasn't the same
Your right about that the old ESPN was better
IKR and also when CBS and TNN (now Paramount Network) both ditched NASCAR too. I mean, f*** George Bodenheimer, Les Moonves and Sean McManus for doing that.
RIP: Bob Jenkins & B.P...thank you all in the booth and on pit road for all the memories!
Rest In Peace Bob and Benny. Can tell how much Bob loved racing by the emotion in his voice. One of the really great people in this sport of racing
Rest In Peace Bob - Reunited with BP & his wife Pam
Bob and Benny are with Buddy Baker Steve Byrnes and Barney Hall
Godspeed Bob Jenkins. Thank you for all the memories. Say hello to Pam, Larry Nuber, and Benny Parsons for us. We love and will miss you always. Motorsports was better because of you. 🏁
Bob Jenkins > Rick Allen anyday
Had to come here after hearing today's news. R.I.P. Bob Jenkins :(
RIP Bob Jenkins. Off to call the race in the sky. I’m sure Bob, Benny Parsons, and Barney Hall are calling a hell of a race.
with Steve Byrnes as lead pit reporter
@@JasonDelarosa2000 And Buddy Baker in the booth as well with Neil Bonnet and Chris Econimaki on the pit road too.
We thank you, Bob, for your illustrious career as a commentator in both Indycar and Nascar, guiding both sports to such great eras, especially the latter, where many people saw you (not me, unfortunately) along with so many to mention on the booth, but you were always there, with them, and the fans that listened to that golden voice of yours, not just on the races, but also in videogames, introducing newer generations to such a delightful sport, or at least, at the time
Hopefully, you and BP will call those races in heaven, in those packed fields with Dale Sr, Kulwicki, Davey Allison, just to mention a few of the many greats that have parted the way you've gone now
RIP Bob Jenkins, 1947-2021
R.I.P. Bob Jenkins
Rest In Peace Mr Bob Jenkins and Mr Benny Parsons
R.I.P Bob , the voice of my childhood watching Nascar. God speed
RIP Bob Jenkins. Commentating with Neil Bonnett, Benny Parsons, Buddy Baker and Steve Byrnes at the speedway in the sky
watching this after the voice of nascar bob jenkins passed he said it best the perfect sunday afternoon was watching nascar at 1 pm how it should be brings a tear to my eye
I was a fairly new NASCAR fan and I cried so much that they were leaving.
Just watching this again to remind myself that ESPN once gave a fuck about NASCAR and motorsports in general. The sendoff they did today was a grave insult to everybody who worked in the 1981-2000 era, even if Allen Bestwick mentioned them in the sendoff. I just wish NBC will give NASCAR the coverage that it deserves next year, even if NASCAR isn't what it once was. All I can say is, RIP *REAL* NASCAR on ESPN 1981-2000. You are dearly missed. Now, the 2007-2014 era, that's another story.......
They didn't even give Allen Bestwick a proper sendoff. I at least thought he would get to make a goodbye speech since Homestead was the last NASCAR race he will ever cover.
UPDATE NASCAR ON ESPN CAME BACK IN 2006 TO REPLACE THE BUSH RACES FOR FOX
Actually, it was Nicole Briscoe who would give the final send off to NASCAR on ESPN after 30 seasons and introduce a video highlighting all the unforgettable moments of the 30 seasons in the history of NASCAR on ESPN with "Closing Time" by Semisonic (for NASCAR on ESPN's unforgettable moments) and "Saying Goodbye" from The Muppets take Manhattan (for a 👀 at NASCAR on ESPN's production and technical crew, the hosts, the pit reporters and the announcers and their respective families) both playing in the background after Briscoe gave a long final speech about NASCAR on ESPN's 30-season history, the new NASCAR 📺 deal with 🦊 and NBC, her favorite interviews with ☝️ of her friends Danica Patrick, her life as a mom to her daughter Finley (who has been with Nicole for nearly every NASCAR 🏁 in the pit studio during NASCAR on ESPN's final season), her then-upcoming stint on SportsCenter with her other friend Lisa Kerney and a final farewell to the viewers and fans.
@@danalong1237 there was no footage of Nicole Briscoe saying farewell to NASCAR on ESPN but I believe Regine Tolentino said these final words after the 2000 NAPA 500 as she mentioned Tina Monzon-Palma, Ramon Tulfo, the late Jose Mari Velez, Mari Kaimo, Vicky Morales, Toni Rose Gayda, Rissa Hontiveros, Rico Hizon, the late Bobby Guanzon, Mike Enriquez, Mel Tiangco, and Karen Davila were the personalities of NASCAR on GMA
RIP Bob. Class act buddy
Such a class act. That broadcast team has been sorely missed. RIP, Mr. Jenkins. Tell BP I said hello.
This video puts a lump in my throat because this was the end of an era and the beginning of NASCAR's long spiral towards obscurity. At this moment in time we still had Winston as the series sponsor, Dale Earnhardt was still alive, no car of tomorrow or the chase for the Sprint Cup and great racing coverage from ESPN, TNN, and TBS. So sad what we have today.....
Well then dont watch it. Simple solution. If I dont like something, I dont do it, or watch it.
@ Robert Shinn, I don't that is why I'm on youtube......
Lorenzo Haskins
Well for someone that doesnt watch it, you sure know a lot about what was going on. Just another typical NASCAR fan. Whine, whine, whine, and then when Sunday rolls along... youre in front of that TV.
Have you ever heard yahoo sports? I don't have to watch to know what is going on and no I'm not in front of the TV on Sunday's I don't have cable and can't catch most of the races. But you will find me at Langley Speedway every Saturday night during the season watching local racing.
Fox Sports and NBC, while TNT was gone along with ESPN after 2014
I'll admit, I shed some tears while I was uploading this to my computer, as I did when this first aired.
Said double-M when we all had to endure the ups and downs and errors of the 2007 wave of ESPN coverage
Goodbye, Bob.
Remember watching this the day it happened. All the way back in 2000. Man feels like yesterday!!!
And just after I was born.
You Will be Missed Bob Jenkins 😢
RIP Bob and Benny
Les Moonves, George Bodenheimer and Sean McManus should apologize for ditching NASCAR on ESPN and CBS in the first place.
No one had come close to this great of coverage since.
R.I.P. Bob Jenkins, Benny Parsons, Dale Earnhardt (Sr.) and Kenny Rankin.
RIP Bob Jenkins
Bob's death is devastating 💔
This year should have been 39 years thanks for the memories ESPN
I remember watching this video back in like 2009 and everyone was outraged that the music was removed, but now it's back.
2009 was a dark time lol
Feels like yesterday. I used to have to go to Grooveshark and find the Kenny Rankin song and had to work hard to synch it perfectly it wasn't easy haha.
efan2011 Wait you feel nostalgic for a video that was nostalgic from the start? lol thats weird time paradox thing
Yes it is back
@@Godblessamerica2012 I agree
Thanks for the memories ESPN
Loved Sunday mornings on ESPN with Bob, Ned, Benny, and Dr. Jerry. The best of the best. I began watching NASCAR in 1983 and continued for 30 years. What a special time. Thanks for the memories!
As far as I'm concerned ESPN always did the best coverage of NASCAR races and should never had lost the coverage aspect. They truly have done it the best...To me no other channel or news corporation has done NASCAR any justice. I truly believe ESPN was the best coverage.
CBS too.
This, combined with Earnhardt dying a few months later in Daytona. Pretty much was the start of the decline of NASCAR.
R.I.P Bob Jenkins. 😭
Bob's call of Allison going into the grandstands at Talladega on May 3rd, 1987 remains forever one of the greatest calls in NASCAR history. He was the absolute best.
Nobody covered NASCAR like ESPN did before or since seeing these old clips though, especially with the kids... where are they?? I know some were the drivers kids but others might have been spectators they would be into their early 30s thoroughly enjoyed this!

NASCAR
Very much agreed. I started watching NASCAR in 1997, when I was 7 years old. All of the commentating crews were fantastic back then, but ESPN was the leader. The general. Their coverage was informative, lively, entertaining, and made NASCAR an important force in sports. This crew is so missed it actually made me cry watching this. I was at school when this race aired and the VCR botched in recording. Thanks for the post. 5 stars all the way.
This was the GOLDEN ERA OF NASCAR.....................NEVER again.......DAMN!!!
This is when NASCAR made first wring decision
Rest in peace BOB, Benny and stay safe Ned.
This is a fantastic NASCAR video and that was a great win for Jeremy Nadeau and a fantastic 2000 championship win for Bobby Labonte
Only for Busch and Winston Cup, but they had the trucks until 2002, then came back in 2007-2014.
how ironic that ESPN doesn't even acknowledge NASCAR's existence anymore
SportsCenter actually honored Bob Jenkins last night.
Other than that dedication, this mostly ignoring is sad indeed
Their coverage ended in 2002 so yes the Truck series did have ESPN coverage post-2000. Their coverage wasn't bad, but couldn't hold a candle to Bob, Benny, and Ned.
Thank you for posting this! Me and my dad traveled to Atlanta to watch this race in person so we never got to see the broadcast! Thanks!
this year should have been 41 years
for years i had the race and this sign off on VHS. In 2000 I fought to find an email address to give props to ESPN, think i actually got something through. AHhh.. back in the day.
Way better coverage than Fox sports. RIP Benny and Bob.
Sometimes I wish I could just go back in time.
Those were the days, back when I was in grade school.
Song title is "Groovin'" originally done by "The Young Rascals" - 1967.
I also have this on a tape since then, I never figured who did the ESPN version of the song. They did a great version of it too.
The ESPN cover here was performed by Kenny Rankin, very talented guy.
The magic began with ESPN in 1981, went away in 2000, came back in 2007 and went away for good in 2014, hasn’t been the same since.
Does anybody still happen to have that "DW: A Champion's Salute" on tape or DVD somewhere? I would really like to see it if anybody has it. It would be interesting to see.
I don't Randall
IDK Who will upload DW: A Champion's Salute that was one of the last NASCAR TV Specials aired on GMA Network either Dave W or jinjabreadman46
We'll have to ask Mr. McIntyre
of the daytona 500's ESPN king of 90's and overall race braodcasting and coverage.
2014 Also will be the final time ESPN will carry races, Until if its return in 2025, Until then NASCAR on ESPN 2014 farewell.
With the way Brian France has run NASCAR into the ground, don't expect NASCAR to be around in 2025 either.
Whoopity Doo if Big Bill, Little Bill or Dale E were still around, NASCAR would be so much better
If Dale had worn his HANS Device, also Bill Jr. died from health problems too, and the sport is doing good right now, ratings are up this year
Who going to bid the NASCAR tv rights after 2024?
this year used to be winston cup racing for 38 years
Bob and the people he worked with made it EZ on the ears.
23 years ago we witnessed the end of an era of NASCAR on TV. Gone were the days of 5 channels had the sport and actually cared for it. Even though some iconic names we heard went to Fox and NBC even TNT one year later. Little did we know what was going to that fateful Sunday afternoon.
To be fair. NBC and FOX showed great care for the sport in their first run. Coverage was amazing from both of them, after 2007 though, terrible.
Hey Benny What's for Supper?
TNT will continue to suck as long as Webber is doing play-by-play. As well as having an hour and a half pre-race show. That 5PM start time at Sanoma was rediculous. Sure they are on the west coast, but we in the east still exist!
Then it was back and gone once again.
I try to forget the 2nd iteration ever existed. When NASCAR returned to ESPN, both had become complete shit.
NASCAR essentially ceased to exist as it was meant to be known after this point
That's true
Yeah, once ESPN came out, Fox and NBC began their takeover of coverage of the sport.
This really was the end of Nascar. It just became one gigantic commercial with Fox and NBC taking over the following season. Earnhardt died the next race and drivers became increasingly bland and policitally correct (save Harvick and Tony Stewart on occasion). I have been watching Nascar since about 1990 and I am willing to be 100% of the people who have watch it for that long would LOVE to see the sport go back to the TV coverage and racing in those days. I can't stand the "new" nascar
Re watching the 90s races on ESPN is like watching the races with your friends. Bob, Benny and Ned were a great team.
R.I.P. Dale Earnhardt Sr. you are the 🐏🐏🐏🐏 (1951-2001) been a fan of NASCAR and you since 1989 as a teenager
Jimmie Johnson is the GOAT
@@GH32143 Sorry but Dale had better Competition
I miss bob jenkins............
ESPN went on a 6 year break of not covering NASCAR. This was there goodbye in 2000. They then returned to coverage last year.
Save for the Truck Series in 2001-02 (as well as IROC) and it's 2004 airing of _3: The Dale Earnhardt Story_
The cover song was sung by singer/songwriter Kenny Rankin
Bob Jenkins currently teaches Broadcasting at the University of Indiana and owns a race team...Ned has done spotting and has appeared in the broadcasting booth alongside son Dale in some race in 2007...Benny passed away and we will miss him.
Gosh This Brought Back some Memories! Wish ESPN's Coverage was as good as it was back then!!:)
This was a time when the networks realized the most important part of the race broadcast was the race itself.
thanks for the memories many memories
The last sign-off of ESPN's 20-year love affair with NASCAR was shown before the sign-off for NASCAR on GMA's last telecast on November 21, 2000. The NASCAR on ESPN Tribute had Groovin by Kenny Rankin while the Farewell montage for NASCAR on GMA had Tribute by Yanni. GMA News and Public Affairs along with Viva Television Corporation, Television and Production Exponents, Inc., and SilverStar Communications, Inc., co-produced their last NASCAR Year in Review entitled Ang Kaligayahang Walang Hanggan: The NASCAR on GMA 2000 Year in Review, which was hosted by Jessica Soho, and aired on December 24, 2000, right after the reairings of the NASCAR on ESPN Retrospective special and The Great Finish Line: The NASCAR on GMA 20 Year Retrospective Special
We'll be seeing this image again in 2014 at Homestead
But ESPN went out with a whimper in 2014, to show they were HAPPY to leave the sport - this is where they went out with a BANG!
Next year should have been 39 years
Rest in peace Bob Jenkins
Those were the good ole days. I miss those days.
Lets hope this year is better.

The 2007-2014 ESPN sucks
You're right Mike Boyle. You've said about the 8-year fucked up hogwashed run of NASCAR on ESPN
1981-2000 Nascar on ESPN Forever
Did ESPN completely forget what made them so great? It seemed they did in those eight years.
That and since Marty Reid was covering the Nationwide race at ORP, Bob did play-by-play along Scott Goodyear for ESPN at the Rexall Edmonton IndyCar race.
That Bob Jenkins and the Sprint Cup car owner are two different people.
It's Jenkins with the 'fro along side Eli Gold, the next shot is Ned and Neil Bonnet (RIP), then a clean-shaved Dave Despain, then Larry Neuber at Talladega, Jerry Punch is at 3:30 (with HAIR!)
I agree with ck7813, this was the end of NASCAR as I can remember at least. FOX and NBC taking over was exciting at the time because all the races would be on network TV save for a few. Earnhardt dying did not help matters and it turned many people off because he WAS the show in many merits. I compare NASCAR on network TV a lot to the Andy Griffith Show after Don Knotts left, sure you had color but the actor that replaced him could not remotely replace him, those are big shoes to fill.
Impressive comparison; we really wanted ABC to stay on board
NEXT YEAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON FOR 42 YEARS
Then no. The Busch Series use to run on the 4th of july weekend at Milwaukee back then and I go to that every year, so no I don't have the CBS goodbye.
THIS YEAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN 39 YEARS
Bobby would have won more Cups if Makar hadn`t left as crew chief.
There just hasn't been another set of announcers that called a race better. Didn't miss a race thru their years. After they quit, by 2003 or 2004 I just stopped watching. I used to plan my Sundays or Saturday night around it. I haven't seen a complete race since.
Best broadcast team ever
This year should have been 39 years
How did ESPN lose the NASCAR tv rights after 2000, then coming back to 2007, and lose again after 2014.
Easy... Someone else offered NASCAR more money.
How they offer a ton of money to televise of NASCAR.
Bidding the tv privileges on the network.
@@racermac1988 The 2001-06 Deal with FOX and NBC Was 2 Billion Dollars
As previously mentioned, it comes down to one word: Money. Other networks offered more of it, while ESPN/ABC did not bring enough to the table to claim a stake in the contracts at the end of their respective runs. I really wish they would have, but what we got in the early-mid 2000s with the NBC/TNT side of the deal was still great (FOX is still going to this day, and they’ve remained in the middle for me since the turn of the 2010s). Was just sad to see ESPN/ABC were not what they had once been when they returned, as that was when I first got into NASCAR...
