- Fact: There is not a kinder human being on the planet than the great Del McCoury. And for more than 50 years he's proudly carried the torch for real, hard core bluegrass.
A member of the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame, McCoury was first bitten by the sound of a banjo. But he later took up guitar when he was asked to join Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in 1963.
Since then, McCoury has cemented himself as one of the most important names in not just the genre, but American music history.
Recently, Jarrett Bellini sat down with McCoury before a show at City Winery in Atlanta for a conversation about music. the legends, and even some secrets to Del's famous hair.
* Apparently This Matters is an interview series by Jarrett Bellini. The concept it simple: I have a case filled with postcards. On the back of each postcard, I write different topics. We pick these cards at random. And then we talk.

The man is as real as real can be. You're looking at a legend when you're looking at Del McCoury! 🌞
What a gem. The best thing about this is the ironed crease in his jeans! I bet his wife does that too!
He's like a kindly gentleman farmer. He's from around my part of the country, and they are around here. He is quite a treasure.
Monroe, Flatt, Scruggs, and Wise may have created the bluegrass sound, but Del McCoury perfected it and brought it to its apex.
Del McCoury has forgotten more then i'll ever know.
I love seeing him and the boys at fests. Their sets are so real and authentic and they do not take themselves too seriously. Del gets up on stage and just looks happy to be there. He just seems like such a cool dude.
He sounds exactly like my grandparents. I feel right at home with him. I love his music. Live long Mr. McCoury!
Del is a fine human being and a rhythm master! He can make a mule listen!
Dell: Oh dang man,I like that Billy Strings guy. My wife likes that ol Post Malone. Well I guess I do too.
Del is so proper he’s got creases in his jeans!!
Some of the first BG songs I ever learned were sung by Del McCoury. What a great singer, and he's a true legend.
No one plays rhythm guitar like Del McCoury! He and Lester Flatt are the best that I have ever heard. Too many young guys try to play fast and they miss the timing and the all important shuffle sound during the breaks. J. D. Crowe said it best: "I try to get the timing right!"
My wife & I had the great pleasure of seeing Del & his group a couple of weeks ago. They are the best. Bar none.
I have had the pleasure of seeing him & his band at The Farm, Eureka Springs AR. He is so talented, kind & easy on the eyes! His hair is beautiful!
I've been in that library. Worked there for seven years.
Del is so cool!
Why would 4 people not like this??? Reminds me of my Papaw.....
I know everyone calls Bill Monroe the father of bluegrass. But for me Del McCoury is the personification of bluegrass. I don't think I ever hear him sing a song I didn't like.
Del is a true American Treasure !
love Del
Outstanding interview.
I love Del! I didn't remember if he was featured in the many East Coast festivals I attended in the late 70's mid 80's. But found him maybe later on CD at Boarders in early 2000's
Del is just a class act. He was kind of a bluegrass outlaw in the 60’s and 70’s but he’s a family man 100%
The grandfather everyone wishes they had!
I had two of them. I’m a lucky man.
He's a national treasure!
I wish we could start over in that time period and I wish I’d be alive t see all a them musicians.
I love his stories
Del is real person, down home guy.
Now THAT was good.
WOW! So Cool!
Sure seems to be a very kind man
Love his music and his radio show
This is legendary.
I spent 5 years in Eastern Kentucky. Dell's speech sounds like my memories. He might be Tennessee or something. I don't know. But I enjoyed my time.
I’ve always heard Del was from Pennsylvania. I wonder where his accent comes from
I love his version of Goin' Up the Country by Canned Heat, done in the BG style. It was truly awesome. Only Del and boys could pull it off like that. 😁☮️💖
Love that soft voice, bet he learned that from his wife to, ha,gb
People make fun of me for wearing starched blue jeans, but since I see Del still wears them that way, it's good enough for me.
Such a lovely guy!!!
I dont have any of dels records but after seeing this video I think he is a diamond.
Hopefully that has changed by now! He is a diamond indeed, and his records are priceless!
Met Dale one time...a great person, the real deal!,
I'm a recent convert, but if this man, his family and their many friends aren't just some of the greatest musicians around. I especially loved his families version of for what it's worth, though Del wasn't part of it.
Must have been the Hermitage.
I wonder if he’s a Dapper Dan man.....
Legend
Del is the real deal
Dang his accent is just peachy
With all the junk on this here utube this is gold .tk you
Maybe it's the camera angle, but Del appears to be a giant compared to the interviewer.....
Del McCoury is the boss
Ignatius Cheese
That's me
Dall is a good player.
26,000 people want to know your hair secrets.
Dell is Deadhead,! Who knew.
