Some of the best times of my life were spent seeing Van Halen live from 1980-2015, but especially from '91-'95. They were a well-oiled rock n' roll machine taking no prisoners.
My husband and I were at this show. No one knew they were filming it for a video until they announced it right before they played it. Such an awesome concert. It was HOT though, It was filmed in Sacramento in the summertime.
Cal Expo! We were there. Sacramento CA. My husband had me sitting on his shoulders out there in the middle of the crowd. It was the best ever. I still remember them announcing what they were doing right before the song. ❤️
I was at the Tinley Park, IL (Chicago) show two weeks prior to this video. I wanted a live VH album of that tour SO bad after this video came out hearing the audio mix of this version. Carnal Knowledge had been played all summer nonstop and I couldn't get enough. I'd have to wait until August 1992 for the Westwood One broadcast from the two Fresno shows which blew me away - except the drums sounded dull (not crisp like on here). Andy Johns mixed the live album and most of the show(s) came out on VH Live: Right Here Right Now in early 1993.
Was at this show and have a .25 second claim to fame in the video at the 2:00 mark! When it aired and heard it was this show must have watched it hundred of times looking for myself and my friends. Epic! Alice In Chains opener was legendary too. We were some of the few fans that new their music, got to the rail and had Layne come over and sing along with us. Stayed on the rail the whole night after that. RIP Eddie, may you shred forever...
I was there too. Sat on husband’s shoulders. Was so exciting they were filming. We weren’t as close as you. Out about half way to stage but at least I got to sit on his shoulders. What an excellent memory. I was 28 years old.
I was at this concert and am one of the tricks on a dudes shoulders. I’ve never seen the video only knew it was recorded there. Wow- the memories now that I’ve finally seen it.
I watch this video and I just can't believe the vitriol Sammy, Eddie, Alex and Mike toss back and forth now. I saw this tour four times, and the Balance tour four times as well. They were tight and (seemingly) having a good time.
@@thewhatorwhy big thing is they were legit good friends so even with issues they could get a long and have a good time most of the time and especially on stage. Sam and Mike deserve a lot of credit for keeping it as normal as possible on 04 your.
@@ColtraneTaylorno, the video is a mash up of the whole concert, but the audio is taken from that concert, VH loved playing Cal Expo even though there were bigger places available to them in town they loved playing outdoors
October 1991. I still have the T-shirt in good condition. I'm at 1m6s on this one. That gal at the 15-second mark had her nipples covered by a couple of KRXQ 93 Rock Stickers and some silver glitter paint (Back before it became 98 Rock.) She was also wearing some raggedy cut-off Levi's, that she later took off to reveal the G-String she had on underneath. She was pretty sexy! ;-) Some of the camera footage before the concert kicked off was taken by Mike Starr from Alice In Chains; who opened up that night for Van Halen. They really did put on a good show. The only song I knew of theirs at that time was Man in a Box. Rooster is still my favorite of theirs.
I was there too, love to say I remember it fully but between the liquor, the heat, fighting to get up to the front in a general admission show, there are many gaps. I do remember this being from the end of the show tho. Gaps or not it is a great memory.
I cant be 100% sure at my advanced age, but I'd bet hard cash this was at Cal Expo in 91 or 92. I was 23 or 24. I was there with my best freind Ricky who had just caught a pick Eddie flicked out in our direction, celebrated with too many tequila shots before trying hash for the first time. I turned around and he was gone. Security had taken him to the infirmary. when the show ended i went out the wrong set og doors and had to walk all the way around to find his truck. He was passed out in the bed of it, so i jumped in and started driving us the 90 miles back to Turlock. Open air riding in the bed of a truck at 70 - 80 even in decent weather is a little chilly so just a little south of Stockton i finally heard him beatiing on the back window of his own truck and I pulled over we switched seats. I went to sleep and next thing I know theres a flashlight knocking on my window. I come to and see Ricky outside doing sobriety tests on the shoulder with CHP. Hed had a good enough nap that he passed and we were on our merry way. That was the ONE and ONLY time either of us ever got pulled over partying and were let go. We always said Eddie's pick got us through that. I havent seen Ricky since 2001 but I still think of him and shit we got into in glorious 80's and 90's when the world wasnt so pissed off and life was so great. Anyone else from the 209 remember being at this show?
James Kirk I was on an AIC - Man in the box video lately. They were cursing Van Halen calling them talentless partly because of the reception Halen fans gave AIC as opener.
I recall that one of their official T-Shirts that was being sold had that exact verbiage. I regret not buying one at the time. . . . But then again, I only had enough money for just a Van Halen shirt. ;-)
@@thewhatorwhy I saw the show w/ both bands in Phoenix. I don't know what gave the band that idea but they were treated OK by the fans there; 1 person even gave Layne a beer & he commented how friendly people were here (got his comment on a bootleg tape). I'd heard 2 songs by AIC by then on the radio so I at least was familiar w/ them; ended up buying the album myself afterwards.

This was my first Van Halen song and video in 1991!
Saw this tour when I was 16 in Tacoma Washington. It was sheer Magic
