I think we can all agree that society was objectively better 40 years ago. Was there racism, was there poverty, was their inequity? Yeah, but they weren't as weaponized (by corporations, and their puppets/politicians) as they are now, and we weren't nearly as divided, as we are now. The Collapse was already happening back then, but it was much more subtle and small, and there was still patriotism and a belief in ourselves, our nation, and a bright future, and that's what makes these old commercials so bittersweet to use oldies that grew up in the culture they depict. I miss it. I'm looking to get out of this USA in the next couple of years. I don't want to be around for The (planned) Collapse.

It's amazing to think that these ads are almost 40 years old. If you had told me in '83 that I would be watching commercials in 40 years with nostalgia pains, I would've laughed in your face...
I wish also to wake up in 1983 but with experience that I have now ( like in the movies) in order to not make the same mistakes again and would run to my high school to know someone...
Born 1983, stumbled on this one. Its amazing how much media and ads have changed. After watching I believe its wrong to say people then didnt have the same issues we have. I do believe the ads seem more genuine and honest.
I turned 17 years old in 83.. and it was a fantastic summer! My car my friends, going to the beach hanging out, chasing the girls 😊 it was a special time.. the freedom I had.. I sure do miss those days.
When I was in school we said the pledge every day. And to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God ,indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
When I was a kid I couldn't wrap my head around the phrase "and to the republic for which it stands". It's a shame kids are taught that the US of A is a democracy and not a republic. Perhaps it's too complicated for children. Democracy seems like a fair system but democracy without the rule of law is by definition mob rule. In any case, it's a shame it was cut out.
Actually the original Pledge was, to the flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. The part, under god, which literally divides the pledge, wasn't added until McCarthy's witch hunt era in the 1950s.
I was 7 years old in 1983. Such a happy time and seems to be such a happy feeling watching these commercials. Not sure why, but even the message comming through these commercials seems to be much more simple, easier . Would love to be my age now and back in the 80s again!! That would make a great movie. Somebody cast me for this part please, so I can be happy all over again and experience that feeling!!!!
The Hitachi commercial is a good example on how fast technology was changing in the 80s. They offered a 10 year on Transistors but yet by 93 you could not find a transistor for repairs.
Wow! 1983! I would love to go back, and wake up in 83” I would be back in the age of 13, what a great moment in the second coming of the British music invasion bands like Duran Duran, Culture Club, Def Leppard, Judas Priest & so many to list.

Wow, I haven't heard or thought about that Time Magazine jingle since probably 1983, but it still sounded so familiar. They must have drilled it into my head back in the day.
Isn't it just wonderful watching these old commercials and not hearing or seeing the phrase DOT COM every few seconds. Today's commercials are completely worthless and garbage. Besides, the people that are in them act like complete idiots.
Of course they did. Wasn't too many years before this that George Carlin recorded _FM & AM,_ where he joked about hidden sex in advertising. Hilarious routine about how cigarette ad slogans were obscene, but as always with Carlin, there was a lot of truth in it. All kidding aside, I'm 100% sure that company knows that one of the things on couples' minds when they're shopping for a new bed is, "How durable is it? Because we can get really vigorous." They figured out a subliminal way to tell them, "You can bounce up and down on this thing all you want and it'll hold up nicely." Without having to come right out and say what they're saying, y'know?
I was four years old in 1983. I grew up and still live in NJ, but I've never heard of 15 Cent Photo in Clifton. But I remember watching WOR channel 9 a lot! Years ago I was in Secaucus for a comic con type event and drove past the studio. 😁
Turned 8 in late August of 83...and yes, I do remember most of the commercials. It's like, you forget them after not seeing them in ages, then all of a sudden, the memories come back. 83 was a damn good year, at least for me.
WEll, since it's 1983 again I think I'll fire up the ol ColecoVision and play Star Wars on my 15" Zenith. The one with the bad color tube that makes purple look like brown.

I wasn't even a teen yet in 83, and the Time commercial hit me like a ton of bricks. As soon as I heard them start singing the jingle it all came back to me.
What happened to the Pledge of Allegiance... was the tape like that? Because the black screen that it cuts to doesn't really match the other black screens... you too? The video glitch when that commercial comes in seems to repeat it's pattern... and it faded from the darker pitch black...
Very amusing spot for The American Express Card, when the wife tells her husband she is taking him out for dinner and she had just gotten the card as a "celebration".
