"We're sending a stealth superwarship to sneak past all Dominion defenses to their vulnerable leadership, and inform them that we're not a threat."
*Flawless*
I love how Starfleet assigned Eddington to DS9 because they didn’t trust Odo, and in the end he turned out to be the biggest traitor of them all 😂
"Have you reminded Starfleet that they assigned Mr. Eddington because they didn't trust me?"
"No."
"Please do."

Eddington was the most human person on DS9. He was a hero.
Was he? Or was Eddington right about them and the Cardassians all along?

I love how the Romulan who's rude and uninterested in friendship ends up being the valuable ally, whereas the polite Eddington really is there to make friends, but has no intentions of being one himself

Well he had places to be. It's hard work tracking down the Black Fortress.
Missed opportunity with that Romulan officer. Would loved to have seen more of her.
@@SantomPh No he didn't. His arc was one of DS9's many low points, a melodramatic exercise in literary concepts beyond the abilities of writers and actors alike. Nothing Eddington did or said had any weight behind it, any reality. He was a caricature trying to be a person.
Seska really is a master of disguise.
Dang I knew she looked familiar but I couldn't place where!
@@slayeddreamer3820 That's because she's a master of disguise!

It could be Seska. The premiere for Voyager didn’t start until the latter half of this season of DS9.

"We have to convince them that the Federation is not a threat."
Yes, I am sure a ship that is overgunned, overpowered and equipped with a cloaking device is a great symbol of peaceful intentions. 🙂Thankfully the Defiant was everything she was advertised to be, and more.
Its called talk softly but carry a big stick. The old biblical saying "The Meek shall inherit the Earth" is also this. Be someone that people can respect. Show that you can and will destroy any who cross you but you prefer to not to use that, you look for more constructive terms and make sure that your counter party knows that to do otherwise is not fruitful.
There's a concept known as 'gunboat diplomacy.' A great power would send a single warship into a foreign harbor. It would usually be more technologically advanced and powerful than anything the locals had. The message was simple and obvious, 'we are more powerful than you are and we're not afraid to come right to your front door.' Then you'd negotiate from a position of strength. I'm sure the Federation's hope was to impress the Dominion and make them more reasonable at the bargaining table. It didn't work but was probably the best option they had short of collapsing the wormhole.
@nelsonchereta816 sub space weapons on the otherside at strategic points would have been more useful, if a bit warcrimey
I love that line: "She may have flaws, but she has teeth'.
I remember watching this episode and thinking that T'Rul would be a regular character. I was bummed that they forgot about her.
You want more knife-twisting? The Dominion knew all about her.. and when they occupied the planet her husband and children were on? Had them specifically executed.
@@calanon534 Memory Beta doesn't count. Star Trek novels are woefully inconsistent, and "her family was on Cardassia" is goofily convenient.
@@TheFiddleFaddle I never said her family was on Cardassia, any novel allowed to be published can be considered endorsed-by-source and therefore just as Canon as anything else, and Memory Beta simply catalogues this.
Canon is multiple choice. My statements aren't false just because you don't agree with the source.
2:10 Major Kira: "I hope you brought some clean underwear, too because we need a lot of them right now."
1:46.....one of the few times you hear the Romulan "whoosh" of a cloaking device with the Defiant. They change it for future episodes, give it a strange electronic whine instead :(
I'd never noticed that before, but you're right. I think I prefer the whoosh
huh never noticed that
That "whoosh" was the real technology T'Rul was there to protect.
Every clip I see makes me want to go back and start watching DS9 again. Lost count of how many times I've watched it.

That's funny! Cause he's bLaCk! 🤣.
Enjoyed these episodes; it's like watching a movie!
If only they didn’t use so much stock footage during the later fleet battles🤷♂️😔
If they ever did a remaster, replacing that stock footage should be number 1 priority, @@djayk9692
At least someone can. These shows were never accessible to the deaf due to not being captioned.
Starfleet has recognized DS9 as a major strategic choke point in a potential war with the dominion. As a result we have sent you a single escort class vessel. Nevermind that Starfleet has thousands of vessels, this one ship is all you get.
We also won't install a shroom of doom because lol, ghetto bajor.
Ah yes, but one dinky little escort vessel looks like less of a threat then a full detachment. A bunch of Miranda’s, because that is most likely what would be sent, is going to be a fairly inadequate force, meanwhile the single Defiant, while looking a bit pathetic, is actually a very significant threat and so is far more likely to catch a hostile force off guard. Plus it also gets the Defiant much-needed development work to get the design to state it can be produced in numbers. It’s actually quite a clever tactic.
Plus Sisko gotta have his Pimp Hand…
Subject to the requirements of the plot.
It's so true. Had they put 5 fleets by the wormhole, it would have been like the Persians trying to take Thermopalae with no way round the shield wall. The Dominion might have broken through eventually, but they would have lost thousands of ships.
I mean it's a plot device, but I suppose narratively you could argue that assembling a large fleet at a station without logistical support in place would raise tensions after 2 months of nothing, and might not function quite as effectively without developed supply lines.
You know when you're watching "The Search" because it's the only episode where Terry Farrell wore her hair in that huge Janeway bun.
The Defiant - one of a kind, and TOTAL BADASS !
My favourite vessel in all of Trek.
One of a kind if you don't count the other two.
@@manjackson2772 According to lore they did a full production run of them since the dominion war was so much bigger than what was presented in the show. The difference is that only the defiant had a cloak the rest did not. There was even one ds9 episode with a defiant class with a crew full of fresh cadets training to fight in the war. Iirc they got blown up.

One of my favourite moments in star-trek is when the defiant de-cloaked! What an entrance!
Dominic Toretto: So much torque, the chassis twisted coming off the line.
Benjamin Sisko: It nearly tore itself apart when the engines were tested at full capacity.
The Fast and the Furious came after this episode so in a sense they’re mimicking star trek.
Like the guy who shoehorned a Chevy 283 into a MG. If you rev the engine, the doors pop open.
well yeah a dodge charger doesnt have a chasis, its wielded together bodyparts that form a structure, its why so many on the dukes of hazard only lasted one jump, the defiant however,

Deep Space Nine - absolutely the best Star Trek ever!

DS9 is a rip off of B5 just not as good but much higher budget.
@@concernedcitizen8231 I like them both, and they are both great shows in their own right.
@@tcsmagicbox There is no problem with someone liking both shows but I think JMS should have been on the credits and paid for his ideas that featured in DS9.

Ah the Romulan character that never took and was quickly written off the show. Eddington... has staying power.
Bobaklives And written into “Voyager”.
It would have been nice to see that Romulan again once in a while.
Or probably because Martha Hackett got a recurring role on Voyager as Seska.

Briefing the admirals.
Haggling for the Defiant.
Pulling off a deal for the Romulan cloaking device.
Real life: We ran a Monte Carlo simulation with over 100,000 permutation tests.
Star Trek DS9: We've run *seven* simulations!
"Officially, it's classified as a White Star. But we're going to call it the Defiant."
Odo always to the point & always brutally blunt.
Odo's direct honesty and his glib tolerance of the Federation was just a few of his best characteristics tbh
If they had kept the Romulan Sec. Officer around as a character I think she and Odo would have had an interesting dynamic.
Who knew that all these years the Federation was building long range luxury liners that just happened to have weapons, but when the Dominion comes along even the morally superior Federation must stoop to building a "war" ship. (Still a great series though.)
Defiant was built to fight the Borg not the Dominion. All amounted to the same thing anyway. Dead bad guys and one tough little ship.
@@joshl6275 "Little?"

I never saw any of this before I watched _First Contact_ in the theater. Was never home early enough from work to catch DS9 on UPN. Didn’t have Cable TV either so it wasn’t worth trying to record grainy reception with the VCR.
Imagine my confusion seeing the Defiant with Worf in command, shooting at the Borg Cube, losing weapons, and almost getting ready for a ramming attack before the Enterprise E showed.

A surprise? Do you have fifty more?
In the end the Romulan sub commander was more trustworthy than commander Eddington, the irony
Thanks for downloading these. I cant afford Netflix and where I live(out in the boonies), t.v. reception is dicy at best.
This was the moment i knew this show would be worth my time.
I JUSST remembered why the handle "Commander Eddington" seemed SO Familiar: U S Navy Commander Paul Eddington, portrayed by Kirk Douglas in IN HARM'S WAY. I had been thinking Hornblower, but I kept rejecting it.
Some things must run in the family: Paul Eddington didn't turn out so well, either.
Ben Sisko’s muthaf**kin’ pimp hand.
They had to call her the Defiant cause Starfleet thought it would be uncooth to allow the name, "Ben Sisko's motherfucking Pimp Hand!" to go on an official register.
This was the moment when the writers realised that being based on a space station is limiting our story options, they needed a mobile ship to get the Star Trek feel lol.
More like one of many moments they had to copy Babylon 5.
When the concept came out, I always thought that here was an opportunity in the reverse of Star Trek. Instead of exploring the universe, positioned as the station was next to the wormhole, they could have the universe come explore that station, and then, you'd have the same feel as you had with Star Trek.
But let's be honest: DS9 was a break from TNG and TOS in that the writers were looking to get out of the strictly exploratory and scientific nature that the other two represented.
The same thing happened with Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, and it turned an adequately entertaining show into an interstellar pile of Hawkman feces.
@@DrownedInExile Difference being in B5 we regularly saw multiple White Stars in battle or just idly flying around whereas the Defiant was one-off apart from episodes like Valiant or when the Defiant was destroyed and the Sao Paolo renamed to replace her. The only time they showed multiple Defiant-class escorts at once was in Voyager when the Romulans stole the Prometheus.
@@The_Lucent_Archangel And that makes even less sense in DS9's context. Why wouldn't the Federation mass-produce a warship like the Defiant, in a time of war? Yes it would mean more copying of Babylon 5. But they already did so much of that, what's one more? This could have easily been woven into the plot. The Feds were having a hard time ramping up their fleet production, plus getting the Romulans to cooperate. The Sao Paolo could have been part of a new series of Defiant-like Escort ships appearing in the final battle. They no longer have cloaking devices, but instead have better defenses and medical facilities.
"hello? dominion? yea, we come in peace, we mean you no harm, see how sharp our teethes are?"
So Seska was also a Romulan before she was Cardassian
And people say the Tal Shair are less effective than the Obsidian Order lol. When only one organization survived the battle of the omarion nebula and had a operative in the delta quadrant.😜
The Birth of the "Pimp Hand"........
TV show limitations aside, it’s insane to only send one vessel into the Wormhole to find the Founders.
Especially when you know nothing about them.
The Borg threat becoming less immediate should also just have meant that they should’ve changed plans and shifted to a long term strategy of building a thousand.
We were watching that happen in Voyager, but then they decided to restart and shit all over trek.
It was a stealth mission.
2:20 It’s a schematic of the original prototype “Valiant” before they redesigned it into the Defiant. 🖖🏻
Originally it was supposed to called the Valiant, but with Voyager in the works, they thought that two ships that started with V would be too confusing for the audience, so they changed it to Defiant, which is a much better name in my opinion.
One thing that made 0 sense in DS9 is why the Federation didn't station a full fleet of at least 20-30 ships at DS9 full-time once the Dominion started to become a threat.
Starfleet stopped development of a viable warship design because the threat wasn't as apparent? What a short sighted organization.
Remember that the Federation Council has many representatives that are intellectual pacificist members. They do not believe in warfare and would destroy other species in debates over the matter. So I could easily see time factors being used by these members to steer Starfleet away from producing purposeful vessels of warfare.
I love that Starfleet recognized the need for their own class of Rapid Offensive Units. Errr, I mean: Fast Pickets.😏
The first appearance of Benjamin Sisko's mutha fuckin pimp hand...
Miles, how quick you forget. Remember the Pegasus? :)
The Pegasus was in season 7, and O’Brian left the enterprise in season 6. Also that “incident” would probably be hushed up and not general knowledge throughout starfleet’s lower ranks.
I still get misty-eyed nostalgic when I see that sexy beast de-cloak for the first time.
The Search is a grew episode. It blew my mind the first time I saw it.
Martha Hackett is great!
Also, it's hilarious that the ship chosen to lead a peace initiative with the Dominion is the toughest vessel Starfleet has on offer.
Well they completely destroyed a Galaxy class starship a little while ago. Needed something a bit tougher.
@@javaman7199They needed a tougher ship to negotiate peace? If I were the Founders, and the Federation sent the toughest ship they have to my borders, I would not assume they want to talk peace.
Starfleet should have built a few hundred "exploratory" defiant class ships.
I'm so glad they didn't keep Terry Farrell in that odd hair. It looks like it must have taken hours and hours to do.
First time out it gets captured, enabling the Dominion to learn all its secrets 😆
As many times as I've seen this episode I NEVER noticed that Sisko hands the padd to O'Brien BEFORE he asked the question!

It's amazing how a slight change in the number of frames per second is pretty much unnoticeable in most voices, but then you'll get one person who sounds like they inhaled helium.

I am SO hot for this lady!
Its actually called the USS Ben Sisko's Pimp Hand.
The defiant should have included a phase cloak allowing it to fire while cloaked, and phased torpedoes. Defiant blows up entire dominion fleet by itself. Problem solved.
I dont ships are capable of using weapons while cloaked, the power requirements to cloak means, you cant have shields or weapon, the exception is the reman warbird, which can cloak, and have shields and fire weapons at the same time, So its assume the power generation of the scimitar can power all the systems at once, probably the thalaron generator providing extra power.
@@thehantavirus what about the klingon bird of prey from Star Trek VI?
There's tons of stuff they could use their tech for that would end battles in a hurry, but then they wouldn't have episodes. Like fill an old spaceframe with anti-matter and warp it into a borg cube. Or teleport some planet-cracking bombs onboard ready to detonate, since the Borg are so carefree about letting people transport aboard. IDK. Just lots of stuff they could do against their worst enemies, but that they don't because they have to make a show. Even the most basic of stuff, like say in a fleet battle, you'll see a galaxy class shooting 1 torpedo at a time - like just spray them, all 250 or whatever on board, never stop firing into the enemy fleet
@@cman32826 that was experimental and highly volatile, also that was from the 23rd century.
by the 24th century, most anti-cloak scanning technology far surpasses that weak cloak from that old ship. it relied on just -barely- cloaking enough to not be noticed by a normal scan, and then still being stable enough to fire. The dominion also had some kind of proton scanner that could detect cloaked ships that were moving around at warp speed, so they had to be extremely careful
@thehantavirus don't forget the Klingon bird of prey from Startrek VI
Would've been neat if they paid homage to a certain TNG episode had Miles not been as surprised by the cloak.
