This happens a lot in Canada during the nesting season every spring. It doesn't really hurt at all when they come down and poke you, they are not able to cause you any harm. It's just that it's surprising as they come down almost silently and if you don't see them it surprises you - it doesn't hurt at all.

Ironically it's because of their aggressive behavior people are searching and removing these bird's nest the hell away from their houses.

Red Wing Blackbirds can attack people in all 48 states as well as Canada and Mexico. I have been attacked by Red Wing Blackbirds rather I live in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, and the northeastern states. It does occurred in middle of spring to early summer when they are nesting and raising their young.

Used to have one attack me in Traverse City. If I knew where the nest WAS, I would have retaliated.

We have a bird like this at work! People were confused, "a hawk attacked you?" No much smaller and fragile....look it was still scary!

I hate these guys when I'm on my bike rides! Didn't know if they would actually make contact with you or just chase you away but I guess they really do attack... I'm actually out in the country and just dealt with them and now have to bike back with more wind and hills and about a hundred of these guys to race against! This shall be fun haha
