I have been playing the violin for 6 years now (principle chairs, beating out players more experienced than me) and I am here to tell you that orchestra is nothing like band, due to the fact that mastering a band instrument takes a minute amount of time, whereas stringed instruments are some of the most complex things in the music world. I know how long it takes to master an instrument from my two instructors, both of whom have traveled the world and played in Carnegie Hall multiple times.
goutham reddy It doesn't take 40 or 50 years to master, unless your definition of master is far too exacting. most of the touring professional classical string players are in their 20's and 30's, and if you start early enough, you can be professionally accomplished by college age.
