I average $30k every month selling Angus and it's a great secondary income with very little labor. Much cheaper to buy calfs than breed and you make more money with a 18 month turn around rather than waiting 36 months. Less effort too. I buy 300 calf, chuck them in a milking pasture (doesn't require water), let them graze for 18 months before spending around $1500 on TMR to feed them and wait until their value bounces to $2330.( playing on normal difficulty )
That’s actually the closest to ‘reality’ of raising beef cattle I’ve seen. Unless you’re running a feed lot from go to whoa, Beef cattle graze grass, with few other supplements… then when you want to sell them, you finish them with good quality supplemental food. E.g. 100day grain fed, or a bit of extra hay, and etc. Depending on the operation you may have cows to breed, or just buy them in… depends on your goals and capabilities!
There it was! Great video. Came to the conclusion myself that it was more worth it to get, and explore keeping other animals. I kept beef cows for a good while, and it took so long to see any income at all from them. Went with goats instead, and will probably get buffalos and sheep. Much more beneficial (and fun IMO) to keep animals that produce products that become the start of a production chain. Keep dairy animals and you can eventually make cheese, butter etc. Having those steps makes a clear progress which is very satisfying. With the beef cow you can only sell the cows and that's it... I would actually love to see this aspect of the game expanded and explored. To where we can actually breed pigs and cows to make meat products. There are so many meat types, and it would be very cool to see the process of aging meat for example. The more it is aged the more money you can make? I guess this is not explored in the game because it may be off putting for some, but it is farming just like everything else. Definitely one of the things i want the most in FS as of right now.
I think you could set up a continuous production for measurements. Let's say you have a shed for 40. Have 1 cow each at the age of 0-35 months and one extra at 0 and 1 months - 38 total. You need the 2 empty spaces, because next month you'll have 2 new calves,. You sell the oldest cow and one of the 2 month old calves and you're at the starting conditions again. If your shed is a bit bigger, you can keep the extra calves a few months longer. That way you consume the same amount of feed and make the same amount of money each month. It takes a while to set that up, but once you have it, it works really well - not only for measurement, but also for playing the game. I've done it similar to that when I did pigs in FS22.
Beyond the machinery to make TMR, it is actually more expensive to feed straight silage. TMR lets you use 40% silage and 60% hay and straw which are both lower cost than silage. TMR is the way. It costs less for feeding and makes more money from manure/slurry.
I was hoping 25 would bring us steers to go with the cows; reproduced randomly from any breeding cows. That way you can raise up the steers for sale, and the cows for reproduction in ways that make sense…. Like sticking the steers in a paddock to graze grass only, before adding supplemental feed to get them up to a finished weight (price) a few months before sale. It would add some interesting scenarios for a farmer… what do you do if you wanted more breeders to grow your herd, but got a bunch of steers… or vice versa.
What i did in FS22, haven't tried yet, is just treat them like running a feed lot. Buy calves, sell them at I think 12 months, and repeat. You could make awesome money doing that in 22 and its way faster then waiting for them to breed. On the real life discussion, like you said they are more sold on weight. Manitoba Canada here, friend sells his at lets say 750 800 pounds i think? So one's he sold this fall would have been like 7 months old, ones he will sell in Jan-Feb will be more like 10 months old, might weigh more. But farmers selling to the local auction mart where they will then go to a feedlot would always sell calves. That's kind of the sweet spot for income vs feed used right now. Mostly, I'm no expert to be fair. Would be nice if farm sim was like that. Only being able to have the pen half full to fit the calves born is also annoying.
What I did in FS22 and it works in FS25 as well, I think of it as running a veal farm. I made $118,500 in profit off 100 cows in a year. I built a pasture large enough to have them feed off of grass, plant it don't use meadow because the grass will regrow itself. Then at 10 months feed them hay or silage to get their health up. Sell them at 12 months, buy newborns, and repeat. Its pretty easy income for little work. Same can be done for sheep and goats. I havn't had to feed my goats in over 4 years and I get the milk every month and sell the newborns every 5 months for extra profit, solar panels on the barn for even more passive income ;)

So you sow grass like a normal grass field and then place your barn over it and dont select planting meadow? Do their heath go up eating that grass?
Correct. My goat barn is on fields 3 and 4 on Riverbend. I'm now on year 9 and the 6500L of grass that is left over from the first month is still in there unused. Yes, their health is 100% and I get 2900L of milk from 116 goats every month. I built a cow pasture on field 5 doing the same method. The cows do eat the grass but their health doesn't go up. I feed them TMR now starting at 1600 hrs on the 11th month and sell them at 800 hrs on the 12th month. That is enough time for them to get to 100% health.
In Idaho we have a ton of free range cattle. It would be interesting if there would be some mod, or even base game DLC or in like 28 or something. You buy a big forestry plot, put a fence around it, and then let your cows roam free in there. You then run around on an ATV or something to collect the cows, and bunk them for the winter or sell them. Probably pretty hard to implement, but hey we have some really skilled modders out there
It will be better when the Meat processing plant comes out. I fixed Maddow grass myself I allow fixed the sparkles and flashing and the memory hole. Maybe Jaint's should give me a job its running smooth now
Heard they wont make the new carriages horse-drawn because peta doesn't want to see animals in work. Maybe that +age rating as we also cannot have wine production either
I work in the industry and I agree to some extent. It's not just weight that matters in pricing. It's much more complex than that. It's also different in what ages the animals are in, the fat percentage, the quality of the skin and so on. To really make it realistic, people wouldn't understand it. It should be market value during the year, and also different value of the different animals (cow, calf, stud, and all their different ages and everything else). But to make it really realistic, just like all the other aspects of this game it would be too advanced for a game.
Giants spent too much time adding productions while forgetting actual farming like the animals. Why don’t the horses, sheep etc don’t give manure? I get that they simplify it to sell games but they shouldn’t forget players that actually like a farm sim. Awesome videos btw.
I agree with you there. I do think the animals need a full on overall. I just hope modders can offer something big this time round, like a seasons of old style mod that changes a lot
@ yes indeed. I understand that Giants is company that needs to earn money. That’s why they add stuff for casual players. I get that. But most of those casual players are not fans and customers since the first game. A lot of us are fans from te beginning and most of us want more realism. FS19 seasons was almost perfect for us. I don’t get why Giants are neglecting us. They can add more stuff like crop rotation, bale rotting, germination, etc and make it optional so they don’t scare of the casual players. Hopefully one day… 😁
Seems like the best method would be to buy at 0 months, don’t feed them until 24 months then feed to get health to 100% and sell at 24 months. Then buying a new batch of 0 monthers. This would give you $2200 profit per cow ( $2500 sale price - $300 purchase price). If you only need to feed them one month out of every 24 then you wouldn’t even need to the expensive equipment to make bales - just purchase hay bales instead.
Shorter version of another comment i left, but buy calves and sell them at 12 months, treat it like a feed lot. You can sell 3 times for 1600 over a 3 year period, so that's 4800. You have to buy calves each time, i think $250 per time? So if that's right profit of 4150 over 36 months basically. Or selling at 18 months might be best, you'd have to do math. Just sucks you can't do it realistically by having them breed. Basically buy calves and fatten them up and sell.
The reason beef farmers sell at 18-24 month typically is due to the extra feed costs with older cattle. 36 months would still be worth more money but not per year. I agree Meadow and price per kg should be fixed
If I am understanding you correctly you need 3 cow pastures, 1 for breeding, 1 for fattening females and 1 for fattening males, would that stop your breed issue? I haven't messed with animals yet, building up my field production now to be able to supplement farm feed. I am Hoping for a Real World Farming and Real World Ranching Mod Packs, those would ROCK!!!
I feel like there’s a simple solution here… but it might not be worthwhile to wait for Giants to adjust it - they used the same numbers from FS22, so it’s not likely they’ll change those numbers now.
Why would hay make them as valuable as TMR? Realistically, grass, meadow, hay, should all be about the same and TMR should be more to simulate bulking them up. Put them in a grass field for two years and then put them in a shed with TMR to bulk them up the last year. That is closer to being realistic. Maybe a mod will come out to address this.
Cows are so broken in this game. Feeding them grass does absolutely nothing. Meadowgrass doesn’t work at all. You can literally buy baby cows for $300 each and let them sit for 18 months with no food and no water ,feed them hay and water for one month to get their health and productivity back to 100% and then sell them for 2000 each.
Depending on how difficult economy you play with, you can almost make as much by just selling the silage you need to feed them? I generally think the balance is wrong with beef and pigs. Agree beef should be profitable earlier. I also think you should have to have a bull to breed etc. so much could be done to improve the realism.
That's the best thing to do sell at 24 months until the Meat processing plant comes out then process them into meat 2 cow barns 50 in earth that's 1.25million per year. 975k of that is profit.
