Hitchhiking with Malcolm Smith

We recently visited Malcolm at his dealership in Riverside, California, where he told us the story of his first ride on a Husky and his first trip to the International Six Days Enduro (ISDE).

Greatest all-around dirt bike rider racer that ever lived ! When building my 1976 Husky 360 CR I needed permission to put "On Any Sunday" on the polished sides of the orange powder coated 1982 gas tank to make it a 'Malcolm Smith replica'. Called MSM shop in Riverside and asked them about this, they said they'd look into it. Was walking around @ Home Depot searching for materials for 'honeydos' @ home when I got a phone call. Answered it, caller said "This is Malcolm Smith."....was suddenly speechless!! To an old die hard dirt bike rider/racer who started in the '70s, this was like receiving a phone call from Jesus Himself!!! He said he'd gotten that reaction before and I laughed. He said the film title was the property of Bruce Brown's family and what that meant pertaining to my query and concluded that with "Just put it on there until someone tells you otherwise!" Told him if I ever made it to Riverside I would stop in and shake hands, ask for autograph ON the bike tank!! He said absolutely...One day I WILL get out to MSM! Malcolm Smith is one very COOL guy. : )'

I think he and Steve McQueen both were cool down to earth guy's that treated everyone like one of the bunch. They didnt let their accomplishments go to their heads. There aren't many like that anymore
