Josh I let my bull calf get to near the same size as yours and my neighbor steered my towards a “California Bander” for bigger sized calf’s and I borrowed it and it worked great. From banding to falling off was 22 days. Just an idea for you
When I was in high school, daddy and I went to the neighbor to help deliver a new calf. Daddy had his arm inserted up to his shoulder trying to position the calf and was having trouble. Gary, our 18 year old neighbor told daddy to step aside and he would give it a shot. Soon Gary said frantically, I can't feel that calf any where. Well, we were were pretty sure it hadn't disappeared. Daddy told Gary to step aside and he would try again. Well, when Gary removed his arm it was a dark green from the tip of his finger to his shoulder. You see, there are two routes of entry to the south end of a north bound cow. Seems as though Gary took the "dirt road". Well, needless to say, daddy and I were soon rolling on the ground in laughter!! Gary, quite embarrased told us to "TELL NO ONE". Like that was going to happen. The next day at school, I told anyone that would listen our story. That has been over 50 years ago and I still remember like it was yesterday. Good times!! and Gary remember, we were laughing with you not at you.
Josh have you ever tried the Z tags? we tried them due to cows pulling out the two piece tags. They have worked great so far. Only lost one tag in 5 years. Another tool that is real helpful is the ear tag remover. It is basically a flat plastic hook that has two razors set back in the crook. Just hook the tag and pull and it slices right through it. Almost impossible to cut yourself with it too if the cow throws their head around. Really affordable too, only about five bucks. The only down side is it has a magnet in the handle that is supposed to be used to hold it to the squeeze but it is under sized and the cutter kept falling on the ground. Works great in the back pocket though and never snags coming out.
Just one thing. Use a pair of side-cutters for clipping the old tags out of the ear. Less chance of you or the cow getting cut, if she jerks her head. Oh; and put the entrance to your holding pen next to the fence. Cows will follow the fence strait into the pen.
Or, tag companies make tag cutters. Basically a plastic hook with a blade on the inside. hooks right around the stem of the old tag, one quick pull and it cuts the tag clean away. Upside is, once you got it hooked, if the cow jerks her head, it cuts it right off.
So many good things going on in this video..... One is how low-stressed all the cows we're around the equipment. Another, you and your stepdad just proved you don't have to scream and yell to get them to go where you want and it was very calm looking for both sides. 🚜-Woooo!!
Great Job Josh! Staying calm is always best. I recently sold our entire herd, and the buyer was happy seeing how calm the cows were. Just a note of how I tagged the cattle my first two numbers was for the cow, and the third number was for the year. I would also use red tags for the bull or steer calves. On the backside of the tag I’d put the name of our farm. This made it easier to quickly identify them when they got out or another herd broke in, and just a tad of security against rustlers stealing them as we were well know at the auction barns. I also got a better price on steers if they were knife cut over banding. At the auction when they asked about their shots I’d tell them also about being knife cut (usually by the vet). We had been raising Missouri beef for over 100 years. We quit because of COVID.
That’s awesome that you did the fecal egg count reduction test before you treated. That’s good management. You can learn how to knife cut them; it’s simple and in my opinion way better than banding.

If you ever try the z-tags, you'll chunk that y-tex tagger in the river. The z-tag system is all one piece, and you can tag and pull back without tearing the ear. The y-tex tagger tears the ear if you don't release your grip fast enough.
That worked a whole lot better than the old headgate we have! Great video with a lot of great information, as always! Thanks again for sharing the things that you do!

Around 3:25, if there is nothing preventing the swing gate from going backward I would watch putting my hand or arm in there where if a cow pushed back it would pin it against that support bar.
Good catch! If I'm gettin you right, reachin over the top of the bars would sure be better. And maybe putting a rope loop handle or something else to pull would be even better as he could keep his hand/arm totally clear from possible pinching by the tubing. Nice call!

You need a XL Bander, it a little bigger than the standard one. Even then some times they are a bit big. What I do is pull the skin through the bander. Then work the testicle through one at a time. I have banded some that were been 800 lbs.
Great job! One thing I'd suggest is to not use the 180 degree sweep to hold cattle only use it to move them. If your alley headed to the squeeze chute will hold 3-4 then that's all that needs to be in the sweep at a time. Everything you can do to cut down on stress is better on you and the cattle. Keep up the good work
@@jeanneshannon5607 oh yeah. I was the guy out behind pushing them through while Dad worked the chute and front end. I had a T-shirt or two that I retired immediately after the last animal went through. Not a fan of the green liquid form. 😉
@@jeanneshannon5607 Yep. The paddock we collected into before we brought them into the corral wasn’t usually pastured, so always had lush green thick grass. The cows, naturally, really chomped down. Which rapidly translated to fairly liquid, green piles. One of the first cows into the chute dropped a big pile. The next one hit the headgate hard and her rear hooves slipped backwards hard, making really effective shovels for about a 45 degree launch angle. Painted me good from waist up. All the way up. I had to clean my face and hair. Good times!
Great video. One thing on the sweep don't put your arm between the top bar and sheeted part to move the gate if the latch don't catch it's a good way to break an arm.

Josh that worked pretty well. Glad you bought your system to do the cattle that sweep gate is slick. Don't forget to give your pizza pan a good rinse before you cook a pizza on it. Do you feel a little nervous of cattle banging their heads into you? Did any of them throw out an odd random kick as they came out the end of that press? I'm up on free range there are usually ~150 cows with calves, and some a few bulls it sounds kind of prehistoric around evening till dusk with the cattle mooing loud to come together overnight in to a herd are this helps prevent wolves mountain lion and bears from having a nice bovine meal. I suppose coyote can randomly spook a cow or calf into a fatal situation but the cattle free ranging around here are pretty used to open range and aren't as people and animal friendly as yours. Maybe the cowboy who rides range has a better relationship than the rest of us these are large cattle & I mean truly on the big size no exaggerating.These guys make me long for the days I walked around Scottish highland cattle, even the bulls quickly warmed up to me. Lots of folks very concerned with the cow that had a limp, she was the first cow we purchased. She was bought at the sale barn and was a "cull" from another's herd. She had this foot trouble last year and also lost her calf. More coming on this situation.....she showed some improvement, however had a similar issue last year at this time. Ultimately she will be culled...whether to the sale barn or to the butcher shop. Again...she's showed some improvement, but spending $400 on a vet visit isn't fiscally intelligent, most likely she'll be going to the butcher if I can get an appointment. Remember these are animals that I care dearly for...however this is a working farm and the ultimate end goal of raising cattle is beef. Sometimes tough choices have to be made, just part of running the farm and creating food for our families

it's normal for the cows to have a few flies on them...what's not normal is instilling a systemic pesticide into the animals that I plan to eat and or feed to the rest of the world. Our fly load is very low here on the farm because we move our animals almost daily
Worming pour-on needs to go on all the cattle,not just the ones showing symptoms.Nicely designed crush,locking the body.They will get stroppy,stay away from those hind legs.
We got cow kisses from almost all of them. Did u rent that equip. or purchase? I bet the vet can do a lot for u at one time, like vaccines etc. Could u put like a telephone number on the reverse of that tag or how does one contact u if they get out and are found.

Why tag the cows/heifers on one ear and the bulls/steers on the other? All you need to do is glance 'down under' to determine what they are. I am on old hog farmer and it just seems odd to me. Other than that, I really think your new system is great. It worked just as you intended and it was very low stress for the animals. Keep up the great work.
Josh you should learn to cut the calves yourself so you don't need a vet to do it. I agree though that a bigger bander is great. I have 3 sizes of banders to cover from new born to about 800 pound bulls. I have a few to big for my biggest bander sometimes and I cut them myself. I maybe have 2 to 5 I have to cut every few years.

Why wait till there this size to try an make into a steer ..? We jus carry the rubber band tool with us An when a bull calf is born , it’s so easy to put band on it right then an that’s it that’s all .. no fuss no muss an no cost from the vet doing ! Sending them to the market not made into steers , you will not get a price like you would if they were already steered .. no one needs less money in this farming business .. you are fortunate to be able to afford a set up like to work with cattle as most guys starting out have to go for years with out ..
Band at birth...ya cut out the testosterone that helps these little steers grow faster. Most band at birth and ear tag...then put a testosterone supplement in the ear of the calf...seems that nature already has a way. I've researched and found a bander that will take care of my needs...we'll run them back through the chute and band the calves next month

I've never used a squeeze Chute to work cattle we always did ours with her with heading and healing and by horseback but we did a lot more several times a year across the association. But I spent my day helping in the clinic today so I saw my share of cats and dogs spays and neuters and shots and all that other good jazz and then horses this afternoon
Who's keeping the records ? Being a nurse you surely realize how important record keeping is. Same with your cattle. I'm sure you keep shot & vaccination records on your dogs.
California bander is my go to for the bigger calves. Just give them a tetanus shot after you ban them. Ps. Have someone pulling there tail up over there back while you are applying the ban…
My dad did that without a head holder or medical training. I understand your compassion but you could easily castrate them yourself Josh. Free dog treats 🤷🏻♂️
Why are you having a veterinarian castrate your bulls? Rather than doing yourself. I’m in Far Northern California, we would just do ourselves. Thought with the price better off taking to Auction in tack.

You treat your cows so well, this is a stellar example of how to handle your cows, without using electric prods or abusing them in any way!

We got cow kisses from almost all of them. Did u rent that equip. or purchase? I bet the vet can do a lot for u at one time, like vaccines etc. Could u put like a telephone number on the reverse of that tag or how does one contact u if they get out and are found.

Why tag the cows/heifers on one ear and the bulls/steers on the other? All you need to do is glance 'down under' to determine what they are. I am on old hog farmer and it just seems odd to me. Other than that, I really think your new system is great. It worked just as you intended and it was very low stress for the animals. Keep up the great work.
Rotating ear side and even tag color is common in cattle. It is easy to determine cattle sex, but not so easy if you have 30 plus pinned up together.
Josh you should learn to cut the calves yourself so you don't need a vet to do it. I agree though that a bigger bander is great. I have 3 sizes of banders to cover from new born to about 800 pound bulls. I have a few to big for my biggest bander sometimes and I cut them myself. I maybe have 2 to 5 I have to cut every few years.

Why wait till there this size to try an make into a steer ..? We jus carry the rubber band tool with us An when a bull calf is born , it’s so easy to put band on it right then an that’s it that’s all .. no fuss no muss an no cost from the vet doing ! Sending them to the market not made into steers , you will not get a price like you would if they were already steered .. no one needs less money in this farming business .. you are fortunate to be able to afford a set up like to work with cattle as most guys starting out have to go for years with out ..
Band at birth...ya cut out the testosterone that helps these little steers grow faster. Most band at birth and ear tag...then put a testosterone supplement in the ear of the calf...seems that nature already has a way. I've researched and found a bander that will take care of my needs...we'll run them back through the chute and band the calves next month
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer well maybe with your breed of cattle you need that for them to grow ,, our breed we don’t An far as I’m concerned only minuscule amount of testertone , it don’t make a difference , want your calf to grow faster ... put a creep feeder for calves only out about the right type of calf grain to them while on mommas milk An grass an watch the weight gain An growth you get then !!!
I've never used a squeeze Chute to work cattle we always did ours with her with heading and healing and by horseback but we did a lot more several times a year across the association. But I spent my day helping in the clinic today so I saw my share of cats and dogs spays and neuters and shots and all that other good jazz and then horses this afternoon

Who's keeping the records ? Being a nurse you surely realize how important record keeping is. Same with your cattle. I'm sure you keep shot & vaccination records on your dogs.
California bander is my go to for the bigger calves. Just give them a tetanus shot after you ban them.
Ps. Have someone pulling there tail up over there back while you are applying the ban…

Why are you having a veterinarian castrate your bulls? Rather than doing yourself. I’m in Far Northern California, we would just do ourselves. Thought with the price better off taking to Auction in tack.
If you sale your calves at market with there balls they wouldn’t bring as much money as they would without there balls
