For those wondering, the materials he's using are:
@0:40 -- "Pita", which is the blond inner fibers from agave leaves. (cordage made from this is commonly called "sisal.")
@5:00 -- "Esparto", which is a local name for a sort of grassy bush native to the Balearic Isles. (I have no clue what the more scientific name of this plant is.)
@6:36 -- I have no clue, unfortunately. This is the only time I've seen a sling made in the Balearics that was not made from pita or esparto, So I almost wonder if he's just trying to demonstrate that you can use most any other traditional plant fiber to make a decent sling.

No. Sisal is sisal, african plant. Pita is agave, ok, but they're not the same thing

Very nice looking slings made right out of raw natural materials,indeed! Mine is just one made from a single string of paracord where I weaved the pouch just by playing around and experimenting. However,while I would love to make me a nice braided one like these,I don't know the first thing about braiding any sort of string or rope whatsoever,but I take and use whatever few little skills and supplies I got to make the best of what I have either way.

It's still a 5-strand braid, you just have to thicken each strand by adding in more fibers in the inch or so before you get to the cradle. (Most Balearic slings I've seen usually have each side of the cradle just as thick as the main retention cord itself)

I assume that the agave plant fibers are springy yet tough but wouldn't you want something a bit stiffer for the release cord and the keeper cord so they don't tangle up?

Are you sure ? Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I've noticed that simply adding in more sisal fibers to 5 strand braid makes it bulky and, even though squeezed real hard, less durable, round and just ugly. Like there was a limit or something. However, I think I might have found the way the pouch is to be done. It's 8 -strand braid; it has that sharp, kinda square edge, it's massive and easy to repeat multiple times. I think it's the closest you can get to the original one on the video :)

Para la primera es pita también conocido como sisal, agave, penca o maguey , la segunda es de esparto y la tercera de torvisco, pero puedes utilizar otras fibras como el lino, cañamo, yute, algodón, lana... etc.

Quiero hacer una de este tipo.
Green River si trenzas con cinco lo unico que tienes que hacer es dividir cinco en dos, de esa manera por un lado de quedaran dos y medio y por otro lado igual, como es fibra es una especie de pelo y puedes dividirlo en cinco trozos iguales y vas añadiendo mas cantidad de fibra hasta que mas o menos quede ancho y la haces igual, la otra pala haces lo mismo y tienes que ser los dos igual de gordos, deben medir unos 12-15 centimetros, luego te quedaran cinco cuerdas de una pala y cinco de otras juntas dos, dos,dos,dos y dos( diez) y los juntas pares de manera que hagan cinco y sigues trenzando con cinco ramales

Hola, necesito ayuda, quiero hacerme una buena honda, pero necesito saber de cuanto me recomiendan que sean de largos las tiras, y a la hora de disparar, como tiene que ser el movimiento?soy derecho, y el tiro, tiene que ser con un movimiento de abajo para arriba? osea algo así:

You could use the 8-strand box braid if you want, but if you found the 5-strand braid "bulky", then the 8 strand braid will simply be even bulkier. (Balearic slings are usually made with either a 3 or 5 strand braid, and are supposed to be significantly thicker than most other sling varieties.)
The leaves look like agave, which is about the same plant that tequilla is fermented out of except tequilla uses the roots not the leaves. The thing is though the slings are tan when dried so it may be different I am not entirely sure.

The sling Diego is holding in his hands at 8:03 appears to have its pouch so massive (even tough it seems to be strenghtened with leather) it can't be just 5 strand braid... and if it's 10, I really would like to know what's the proper traditional technique of braiding one.
