I had THE most profoundly inspirational moments of my life with a honey bee recently... The bee landed near me in the garden on a hot day, and I spent 4 hours with this bee which I thought was dying. I did Reiki, gave it sugar water, prayed with it and I put a rose quartz crystal on the ground next to it. The bee actually crawled onto and over the crystal. At one point I thought it had died.... And my first reaction was " oh no I did not manage to save the bee" And straight away I got a message of "I was Blessed that this magnificent magibeing chose to spend its last moments with me" which made me feel so emotional and grateful for this honour.... And lo and behold, the bee started moving and slowly made its way into the lavender flowers and flew away.... I stayed observing her for a few minutes (did not count the time)-she was clearly finding her ways about again after almost drowning- and sharing loving energies with her. At times I feared she would not make it, but I kept trusting her strength. I took a big breath, closed my eyes and enjoyed the sun for a second. I think it is important to differentiate between this modern hashtag 'self-love' thing - which is simply impossible or even bad - and what you could call self-appreciation. Self-love used to mean no more than self-preservation (Rousseau, Adam Smith etc.) as a counterpart to the biblical 'love thy neighbour'. Some modern wellness gurus turned it into a) 'you have to be able to give yourself everything you need, before anybody else would want you' for the disadvantaged outsiders and b) 'you should be okay with whatever horrible thing you do' for the well-connected and pampered. Concerning a): People need love and a sense of safety from OTHER people in order to thrive. There are substitues like time and money and a safe job etc., but you cannot "love" yourself like another person would: other people can provide for you when you are sick, or in some other way helpless. You cannot do that for yourself. But you can be proud of somehow managing to survive and at some point thrive without it after all, and you can appreciate all the weaker parts of you that would not have made it, but still are valuable, loveable etc. - and, of course you should want to survive (Rousseaus meaning of self-love) in order to live well. But all of that is not really "love". Love should be much more than that. And on the other hand it should not b) be unconditional forgiveness either - when love or 'self-love' delete all accountability and responsability for others, it is harmful. ... So I still hate this weird concept of self-love. It is usually used for harmful purposes: a) 'S*ck it up, no one will love you if you don't love yourself!' or 'I'm sorry, I ruined your life, but I still love myself!"
I think you make a very important point, and one that I agree with completely; I wonder then if perhaps I haven't explained that concept the way I understand it clearly enough. For me, there is no love for self without showing up fully as you are, and there's no showing up fully as you are without responsibility and accountability. It's a state of integrity, rather than 'I love myself hence I don't really give a fxuk about you', I think.
