I'm eager to get into the water one day, but I don't live close to ideal water/wind areas. However, I have gone through two sizes of trainer/power kites 1.2m and 4m. You really learn to respect the wind, and master self-launching. Also, the line management is a real skill that you learn the hard way. I went from almost 45 minutes(2hr once...getting tangled) to about 15 minutes(both set-up and rewinding). I fly a 4 liner(with handles), but one thing I've learned in really gusty conditions is that merely depowering isn't enough, because it is very unstable and likes to skip around or collapse. Holding that ideal 3 or 9 o'clock position takes a lot of counter-steering when the wind is gusting. In the meantime, it's fun trying to do jumps and I might even get a landboard.

of staying in a 'crunch' or 'tucked' position during the initial pull stage

Extending the front leg a bit in the downwind direction when getting up was REAL
Important!
So, here are a couple of things I feel were a big part of my success in riding at the
6 hour mark of my lessons:
Choosing the right location and instruction environment. I have a work associate
who started lessons months before me. He had a couple of lessons in Aruba, then Cabarete
in the Dominican Republic and one more in Maui (we work for an airline and have travel
benefits). His lessons were in open ocean locations with only one-way helmet walkie communication

Also, being in water where you can stand is a huge benefit when learning. Relaunching a kite
while you're swimming is something you'll need to master eventually, but getting some experience
