Ammonium Nitrate isn't an explosive. It's an oxidizer. It's essentially like putting oxygen tanks in the building. Only AN isn't in gas form and it's much more condensed. It also produces nitrous oxide at 270°F
If there's a Nobel price for a forensic team reasearch, this would win by far. Never seen something like this. The future looks good if it wasn't for politics.
Like being good matters to the Nobel clowns. Obama won a peace prize and he literally dropped more bombs than any other US president. A peace dove for sure.
The future looks good in spite of politics. Don't you ever forget, human politics is just a part of being human, and being human is practically NOTHING. So being part of practically nothing, I can't imagine human politics being so important. No, seriously, your comment, and my reply to it, are both unfathomably impertinent. 10 years from now neither of us are going to remember any of this. And what little we do remember will be clouded by everything that had happened since and is happening in that moment.
@@danielduncan6806 Maybe that's true for people living in the west who aren't touched by politics. In other countries this isn't the case. People won't forget being homeless for years in spite of surplus housing availability. People won't forget being hurt or attacked because of who they are.
The editing is - amazing. I’m out of words. Using 3D model overlapped by video truly makes us understand where the camera is situated and everything falls in order. Much much appreciated the way this video was made.
This is the best, most well documented and detailed 3D representation ever. I'm genuinely impressed by the amount of work that went into this and how advanced technology is these days, this video is a masterpiece.
If you're not familiar with Lebanon, you'd be amazed at the level of ineptitude. The govt, if it can even be called that, is built on corruption, nepotism and crime and while that's been the norm for decades, the addition of the pandemic, this explosion, the recent banking collapse and now, a cholera epidemic has turned Lebanon into essentially a failed state.
This is SUCH a good production, just absolutely amazing work melding video and photo media with 3d modeling. Stellar work here. It's damned disgusting to me that there was such gross negligence happening there for so many years. Anyone could spend a mere two minutes on Google and turn up incident after incident involving large amounts of AN detonating directly due to extreme negligence. One would think that this sort of thing would be easily prevented, if only those responsible for ensuring the safety of these well known hazardous materials had been doing their jobs.
Still under 20k... I don't think the majority of people understand how incredibly impressive this video is, especially if you have never worked with CAD programs at all
Bravo to the creators of this video. If only mainstream news went to this level of detail in covering tragedies then they might be trusted. Sadly, its more important to report a story quickly rather than accurately.
WOW !!! When I saw the explosion on the TV News, I was completely dumbfounded with the ferocity of the explosion and, how much damage occurred. This was a complete, easy to follow explanation of the timeline and progression of the incident. I'll bet that the officials of THAT city will be much more cautious in the future relating to the storage of Hazardous Materials amongst resident population. Very well done. TYSVM for the explanation and accompanying diagram.
Holy hell. I was just wondering the other day there are so many "compilation" videos on RUclips if it is possible to algorithmically stitch them together to create a cohesive map. And apparently my idea was old by about 2 years !! excellent video by Forensic Architecture team.
This is the first clip we've watched from your channel, and we found it very well done. My husband's dad was an architect all his life and my husband has done years in engineering. It was good how everything was shown on a CAD model and patched together from the footage obtained. This whole thing is a prime example of gross negligence and absolutely no regard to safety in the storage of potentially explosive materials. It seems like nobody knew what else was in this warehouse when they just basically dumped it in there and forgot about it.
this video manages to showcase extreme incompetence (the warehouse) and unbelievable competence (the makers of the 3d model, and this video) at the same time.
It amazes me just how much valuable information was collected to allow such an impressively accurate and detailed mapping. Documentation ovetall is becoming much more detailed and precise thanks to how accessibile good quality cameras have become. The 2020 explosion is possibly the best documented large scale detonation incident of all time.
I was morbidly fascinated by this explosion from the first news of it happening. As soon as I saw the colour of the smoke after the main explosion, I knew it was ammonium nitrate, or, as I've known it in the mining and transport industry, Nitropril. I lived and worked around central Queensland, Australia for many years. It is a major coal mining area in Australia with mostly Open-cut mining being employed. Nitropril transport and storage areas were a common site, and the main manufacturing plant for these explosives was located south of Rockhampton, the main city in the region, and Gladstone, the export hub for the coal, and a chemical manufacturing area. The plant (at Bajool) had entry requirements that were arguably as strict as a high security prison (I've delivered to both). I did Dangerous Goods transport training (for road and air) and was graphically educated about the dangers of Ammonium Nitrate and other potentially explosive chemicals and compounds. Anyway, I wanted to say thanks for this video. It is very comprehensive.
Very interesting video! 👍🏻 I remember when this happened there was a video of a wedding reception just outside the epicentre. The wedding party was fortunately unscathed but the shockwave was filmed barrelling up the street toward them. I wish I could provide a link for the video. The fact the bride was uncommonly beautiful made that particular video stick in my mind. Many other souls were not as fortunate as that group of individuals. Very sad state of affairs.
Very informative, until I viewed this, I was unaware of the actual location of the storage, believing the storage location was the tall silo structures adjacent to the actual location. I was aware of the fireworks stored near, but not the car tires. The people and country of Lebanon have suffered so terribly in the last several decades, this horrible tragedy, that was completely avoidable, is one more awful event to be foisted upon the people of Lebanon.
Great work. Let me note that when people upload videos to RUclips, the videos that appear on RUclips are not always accurate when compared with "true real time". From my experience, uploading a video can impact the speed of the video (frames per second) by a few percentage points. Did you have to re-synchronize the uploaded videos' speed with each others'? I've had to do that.
It's just insane to me that such a small port with 2750 tons of AN, exploded REALLY quickly (and to top it off, something that ignited it, started in a small spot then really spread to the rest, in an INSTANT), and was heard 150 miles away. That's insane. (Took about 11.7 minutes to get there btw).
Quite amazing analysis. It is both fascinating and terrifying how a number of mistakes and safety code violations could sort of merge and create the perfect storm. This is basically the biggest non-nuclear explosion in modern times.
I saw a video where the man was filming the fire. The woman heard a jet coming and said please let’s go inside now, Not 1 second before the blast. I think the ammonium nitrate was given a helping hand. If you search you should find the video on you tube.
So sad what happened...so unnecessary too... Ignorance comes to mind. I find this type of analysis incredible... attention to detail... Most impressive...thank you. Now RIP for those who did not deserve to loose their lives... Shame on the authorities.
I worked at a warehouse in Phoenix Arizona that had 450k wooden pallets (yep). They kept stuffing them in, outside even. I kept warning them it was way too much. It was believed an arsonist came by and lit it up, although never proven. It burned for a week. They had to keep coming back and putting it out. You gotta be smarter than this.
This is tragic, but when i heard the list of items held in that warehouse, i could t help but chuckle at the shear stupidity of all that explosive in 1 place in such a public area.
I was enjoying the analysis of how such an event can occur... But then I had to literal and figuratively pause, when the close up videos began to be shown... I'm no expert, but seeing the crater and the sheer size of the mushroom cloud and shockwave, those people seen in the close up videos are almost definitely not with us any more, at least not barring a miracle...
partial recorrection - ammonium nitrate does not combust as it is only an oxidizer but it can spontaneously decompose by itself if at a high temperature---- Here is the full reaction of that explosion.--- NH4NO3(s){white powder in bags before} → NO2( g){orange smoke} + H2O( g){water vapour} let me just ay this was a great in depth video
the spacing restriction is just so that your nitrate shit burns like a fuse if it ever catches, or like a bunch of delayed minecraft TNT rippling its way from one end to the other , rather than going full sphere again like beirut.
The first post about the fire said "huge blast" no knowing that in comparison of what was to come, that this "huge blast" was relatively interceptable.
They really just said screw it and put all the most flammable and hazardous stuff in the same room. That’s just a tall tale. Someone was killed on purpose
I did not know anything about the people that live there before the disaster. When I saw how nice and cool they all were afterwards my soul was hurt, they did not deserve that. I hope they rebuild stronger.
Obviously it was incompetent packing, just look at them all piled in there like they were dumped as soon as possible (7:07). Working in any industry that deals with storing materials. The workers on the ground usual don’t care and want to go home as soon as possible. I don’t blame them, but the jobs they do have a higher level of responsibility than they realize. There should be a higher standard and higher reward for fine work over sloppy handling. Otherwise these types of incidents will continue indefinitely
Crazy to think that this blast was around 0.4kt...not even 1kt. That puts into perspective the size of nukes. Can you even imagine the 15kt bomb that destroyed Hiroshima?! And that's considered small now. They were testing nukes in the megaton range for a long time, can you imagine what "just" a 1 megaton nuke would do.
It is my understanding that there were grain silos next to the warehouse. It seems the explosion also fractured the silos and cast flammable grain particles into the air and produced what was akin to an additional nearly instantaneous and simultaneous fuel air explosion. I am surprised that this is not pointed out or at least mentioned and dismissed if not true.
this is beyond impressive, the integration of video, 3d model, timeline and other media is seamless and extremely clear. please make another video showing the tech and software - fascinating

Agree. Very comprehensive, gives the big picture in a short period of time too.
And a great narrator with a cool voice.

As a former journalist and current part time 3D/VFX artist, I stand in awe of the amount of work and dedication you put into this. Just bananas.
The negligence which preceded this disaster is absolutely unbelievable.

"where should we put this explosive ammonium nitrate?"
"Uh idk how about in between the fireworks and the detonating cord?"

Ammonium Nitrate isn't an explosive. It's an oxidizer.
