I grew up in Compton in the ealy 90s. I remember going to Norwalk and thinking "whoa this is like Beverly Hills." Nice neighborhoods, with nice houses, lawns, and no cages on the windows. Obviously, I didn't see all neighborhoods, it's just what I remember. It sounds like this dude grew up in a good home with a lot of opportunities. He choose this lifestyle as opposed to the hood taking him under.
