i was genuinely gobsmacked when i recognised the pages with the distributions and statistical methods... my lecturer must've printed it from that book.. tho this is the first time ive ever heard of this orange book 😲
Sharmishtha Saxena Thats a good question. I purchased mine 6 years ago through my university and have never seen them in a local bookstore. You can buy it off amazon for $153 www.amazon.com/Formulae-Examinations-Faculty-Actuaries-Institute/dp/0901066575 or you can try out this website called Scribd for a PDF version for $8.99. (I've never bought anything off Scribd so not sure how legit the site is)
+Matthew Benning Lol I see I did reply to your last message, but as another comment and not a reply to your comment. I'm still learning how to use RUclips haha
If these models are used to apply to real life situations to achieve a cause then I am concerned that these formulas are nothing more than superstition than real value.
Hi, I’m a GCSE student who wants to become a actuary but I’m not sure what subjects i should pick. I have picked statistics maths and business to do as an a level and still need to sit my GCSES but if I don’t reach the qualities of being able to do maths as an a level will statistics and business be enough to become an actuary? Or is maths compulsory to do?
I see this was posted a while ago but I hope you'll still answer my question: Is this book only used in the U.K. or is it also used in the U.S.A.? If this book isn't used in the U.S.A. which book is used for testing here?
I'll keep digging. I just decided a week ago that I was going to change my major from mechanical engineering to being an actuary. If anyone else knows please post it.
I find it wierd that a video of a guy reading the actuarial tables book....like you just basically perusing pages. Dude you could at least tell people where they would get the book but its basically in all major bookshops or school libraries.
Hi Matt, Actuarial Science is best degree you can do it but it is also very difficult and is a big challenge in university. However the pay off is well worth it. Check out this video I made: ruclips.net/video/-F90dN_fb_8/видео.html It explains some of the things actuaries do. The CT exams are not impossible as I have finished all of them now :-) I Studied a BSc at Wits and at work I get paid study leave to focus on the exams. You use a lot of maths in the degree, but not so much while working, well not in my job anyway. Let me know if you have any other questions.
How's it MJ. Hope you are good. You may remeber I asked a few questions earlier this year, regarding actuarial science. I have a few more questions. Firstly if you complete the exams, lets say the 8 CT's and then you moved to another country such as England would you have to rewrite them? Secondly if you complete the 8 CT's and then decide that may this is not what you want to do for the rest of your life, for whatever reason, is it still possible to get a job in the finance/banking/economic sector? Thanks again, Matt!
+Matthew Benning Yes you can qualify as an actuary in a society that you are not currently living in. And yes there is a Certified Actuarial Analyst certificate you can receive if you do all 8 CT's through the English society.
I have two questions, Those actuarial tests apply to the US? Where do you have to take all those 7 exams? Lastly, where did you find that book!? Let me know if you have another one (from a friend or somebody) I'll buy it!
+askaryambus I wrote my exams through the South African Actuarial Society, but you can write them through your own countries society or through the English society. I got my book from University, not sure where you can buy them
next month would be my first semester for acturial science degree. However, im not really sure with my ability in maths since my calculus i would say the level is in the average around 3 out of 5. im scared.. but i really do have that interest to learn this subject.. oh my
@@lourensstrydom1502 tbh, my major actually was biology with minor in chemistry. I don't have the basics in financial maths but I do took calculus during my diploma.. hmm, I think, I have to work really2 damn hard with this course and anything can happend right, with full of determination and passion? Wish me luck with this course!!!
@@hasiqinrasnin2383 just know you will study on saterdays an so,,because its very theory based too. But definitely nothing to be afraid of ,its a really interesting degree thankfully
How's it MJ. Hope all is good. I just wanted to ask you a couple of question regarding the actuarial profession. I'm currently in grade 10 and have been thinking about what I want to do after school, a lot lately. Firstly family and friends have advised that I rather do medicine or business science (both very different from each other I know) and not actuarial science as they consider this profession extremely boring... How much math do you actually use and do Physics and accounting help at all? Those three are by far my favourite subjects, the calculations and whatnot. Thirdly is it really impossible to pass the CT exams. Where did you study and what was your exact degree (actuarial science is presume...)? After you have finished your degree can you start working for a company while you write the exams and do you get paid enough to support yourself? Thanks. Sorry for the long questions. Any other advice would be great. Means a lot!
+Matthew Benning Hi Matt, apologies for only replying now. RUclips notifications aren't the best and I do miss a few comments from time to time. Accounting and Physics will help as you will use the same logic in some of the actuarial areas. And yes you get generous study leave while you work so that you can pass the rest of the exams. And yes you do get paid enough to survive ;-)
hey Mj! I am an actuarial student from India. Could you suggest a few skills and knowledge i can develop apart from computer to get a good job after clearing a few papers?
Shreya, Hi! I wish my child pursue a career in Actuarial. Could you advise me on leading Institutes in India? Secondly, if there is anything like a Diploma in it which is after 10th (instead of studying 11 and 12th)?
4:36 "You do need to know some sort of mathematics when taking on this profession"
Understatement of the century
Only some sort ;)

maths is needed for the higher levels of stats which are needed for the actuarial subjects. So maths is very important

Ben Schoemann that's a good question. we use this book in India, SA and UK. it would be beneficial to have it, but not sure if there is a USA version
I'll keep digging. I just decided a week ago that I was going to change my major from mechanical engineering to being an actuary. If anyone else knows please post it.
In the USA you have to memorize all the formulas.
u have the website for Faculty of Actuaries?
+Ben Schoemann
Do you like mathematics and economics?
If the answer is yes. The next question is are you any good at them?
Im about to persuade Actuarial Science Diploma, any tips?
hii. where can I get that book. would u give me publisher's name?
its just called the 'formula book for actuaries' or the 'actuarial orange book'
