As a lifelong Nebraska fan, I was not overly enamored with him. That said, he was definitely a helluva running back and I will always remember his silver shoes. He is definitely one of the most underrated running backs to ever play the game. I loved it when he went to the Redskins.
Little Joe is my favorite OU player of all time. When I was a kid I went to all the home games during the 1970s Golden Years of Washington, Sims, the Selmon Brothers, and King Barry. It was a special time when we won two national titles and almost never lost.
I grew up in OKC in the 70s went to the games every week. That team with Steve Davis at QB, Joe Washington, Tinker Owens, the Selmon brothers......great, great time to grow up in Oklahoma.
Scott Hill's tackle of Tony Dorsett is one of the best tackle I have ever seen. I was a few rows above the play. My father told Scott Hill I said that. It was AWESOME!
Monday Night Football September 18, 1978: The Joe Washington Show! Caught a TD pass, threw a TD pass, and ran back a walk-off kickoff return for a TD to win the game for his new team (had just been traded) the Baltimore Colts!
Joe Washington...my alltime fav sooner...so many great runs in last minutes for scores to win....so clutch....Howard Cosell called his performance as a Balt Colt on a rainy night the best Monday Night performance of all time......I watch this clip almost every day.....
Im From Beaumont, And I went to The Joe Washington Camp In P.A with my nephew and I really didnt know how good he was til i saw this Video. I thought he was just another Back.
Even as a Texas fan and alum - if you love wishbone fb or just great cfb in general - this is one of the best vids on RUclips. Great job, SGH Thx, SGH.
This was a RB at Oklahoma in the 70s his name was Joe Washington and if OU would have not been on TV probation he would have won the Heisman. He had very good career in the Pros as well.
1:12 to 1:18 I will never forget being at that game against Pitt. The national sports media had pretty much already annointed Tony Dorsett as the Heisman winner and we kicked Pitt's ass that day. I mean we whupped them for all 60 minutes.
Never heard of this guy -- well before my time. But this video is awesome. Good clips, well put together, appropriate music -- and informative. Thanks for the post!
barry switzer's philosophy was get the best athlete, not the best "position player", but the best athlete... run the wishbone and load the backfield with athletes. joe washington could do it all, returns, receiver, passer, runner.
Yep I remember Greg Pruitt back in the days when they allowed tear-away jerseys he must have gone through 10 or 12 jerseys in every game LOL. But he and Joe only played one year together, in 1972.
I have loved ou football my whole life. My dad was showing me videos since i was a little kid, I am 25 now. I heard that at home games every time Little Joe even touched the ball that the crowd would be on there feet. They cant say that for Reggie Bush as good as he was.

Hey,Joe Washington is a LEGEND in the Baltimore-Washington area. He was a COLT AND A REDSKIN (won a ring in '82); my favorite 'Skin when I first got into football. Terry Metcalf may have been the ORIGINAL scatback, but Joe Washington made it an ART. He could do it all run, catch (led the AFC in receptions once), and run back kicks and punts.
Man, Okla had a new great TB every 2-3 years for 10 yrs, straight. Too bad they wern't all great in the NFL. Okla & Nebraska always had great TB's in the 70's and 80's. I love this footage.
First play he fields the punt at the 48 and then is backed to the 18 and then breaks 9 tackles to make his way back to the 45 for a loss of 3 yards. I must say it is the greatest run for a three yard loss I have ever seen. It is said he could run as fast sideways as he could forward. He was All-American and All-Pro.
Not the greatest of Lil Joe's highlights. This is the only guy who has faked out his own shadow and he's worthy of having his own 90-minute highlight real. Most people who never saw him play won't believe it. People have been raving about that HS kid hurdling a DB, Joe W did that in college against Texas and then they made hurdling a defender illegal. I guess that rule was reversed. His punt return vs. Mizzou is the one I'll always remember. How he didn't lose 50 yards is unreal....
I've seen a lot of highlights and players play, and can read "body language". I remember in school people would call me Reggie Bush(jokingly) because I was fast and quick but didn't like the comparison because Bush runs to look pretty and has a hard time running straight. Before I compared my style(body language) to Barry(fav all-time), but man, I don't even know this guy and I run exactly like him lol
P.S. Joe hurdled a Kansas player during their loss in '75 and the punt return was against USC in '73.Also during the '75 Texas game JW quick-kicked a 75 yard punt out of OU's own endzone, one of the longest in OU history, especially by a running back.
lose 30 yds on a punt return to get back 25. lmao. Not remotely RB. He would have been in the end zone. Rewatch to Orange Bowl. You still don't get the difference between USC and UO. It's an ocean wide and just as deep.
Not the greatest of Lil Joe's highlights. This is the only guy who has faked out his own shadow and he's worthy of having his own 90-minute highlight real. joe washington's greatest run was for ONE YARD!!! nichigan read OU sweeping out of its own end zone and had numerous tacklers waiting to stick OU with a safety .JW ran to the corner and dove out of the end zone to about the 1/2 yard line and saved the sooners' posterior. a great ONE YARD RUN!!
THANKS for showing little joe. Many fans don't really know about him.
Joe Washington badass running back great athlete from Cary Robinson from texarkana tx ou fan
Before, Barry Sanders, Reggie Busy!!
As a lifelong Nebraska fan, I was not overly enamored with him. That said, he was definitely a helluva running back and I will always remember his silver shoes. He is definitely one of the most underrated running backs to ever play the game. I loved it when he went to the Redskins.
My favorite college football player ever
Washington, Wylie, Pruitt
Little Joe is my favorite OU player of all time. When I was a kid I went to all the home games during the 1970s Golden Years of Washington, Sims, the Selmon Brothers, and King Barry. It was a special time when we won two national titles and almost never lost.
I grew up in OKC in the 70s went to the games every week. That team with Steve Davis at QB, Joe Washington, Tinker Owens, the Selmon brothers......great, great time to grow up in Oklahoma.
He was the original Reggie Bush!!!!!
The opening play, was that Ronnie Lott on the tackle?
Pruitt is my favorite. Then Joe Washington.
He was Barry Sanders before Barry Sanders. Unfortunately, Joe Washington got little tv time due to probation restrictions.
Scott Hill's tackle of Tony Dorsett is one of the best tackle I have ever seen. I was a few rows above the play. My father told Scott Hill I said that. It was AWESOME!
Silver shoes! I hope the refs called face mask on that TD against MO
I don’t know a running back that resembled Bush more than Rodney Hampton at Georgia
Monday Night Football September 18, 1978: The Joe Washington Show!

Joe Washington was playing with the Washington Redskins when they won the super bowl in 1983
Joe Was Great...but also before Reggie Bush, THERE WAS ANTHONY DAVIS (USC) Scored 6 Touchdowns vs Notre Dame.
Im From Beaumont, And I went to The Joe Washington Camp In P.A with my nephew and I really didnt know how good he was til i saw this Video. I thought he was just another Back.
All sooner fans know about Lil Joe
Love Joe Washington! His legs were stacked.
Even as a Texas fan and alum - if you love wishbone fb or just great cfb in general - this is one of the best vids on RUclips.
Great job, SGH
Thx, SGH.
He's probably the greatest all purpose back in NFL history. Rushing, recieving, returning punts and kicks. As well as passing the football.
This was a RB at Oklahoma in the 70s his name was Joe Washington and if OU would have not been on TV probation he would have won the Heisman. He had very good career in the Pros as well.
Ok Imma run in the wrong direction for 20 yards, just to give you guys a chance.
1:12 to 1:18 I will never forget being at that game against Pitt. The national sports media had pretty much already annointed Tony Dorsett as the Heisman winner and we kicked Pitt's ass that day. I mean we whupped them for all 60 minutes.
Wow I just heard about this guy from a big Sooners fan at work... what an athlete
Never heard of this guy -- well before my time. But this video is awesome. Good clips, well put together, appropriate music -- and informative. Thanks for the post!
The greatest team no one ever saw! Lol!
They fumbled ten times a game or nobody could beat them. Howard Cosell
Funniest Punt return ever and it ended up for a loss of yards on the return lol
Little Joe use to give the Dallas Cowboys fits out there on Sunday when he was at Washington
i know he ran 40 yards back and got them back i liked it
The first guy who started the run of fast halfbacks for OU was Greg Pruitt. The 70s were all about the Oklahoma wishbone.
barry switzer's philosophy was get the best athlete, not the best "position player", but the best athlete... run the wishbone and load the backfield with athletes. joe washington could do it all, returns, receiver, passer, runner.
catch me if you can
Yep I remember Greg Pruitt back in the days when they allowed tear-away jerseys he must have gone through 10 or 12 jerseys in every game LOL. But he and Joe only played one year together, in 1972.
He was great. But like so many in the wishbone FUMBLES LOL
He was so elusive. You couldn't tackle Joe in a phone booth.
Why didn't you show the whole plays?
Greatness still.
I have loved ou football my whole life. My dad was showing me videos since i was a little kid, I am 25 now. I heard that at home games every time Little Joe even touched the ball that the crowd would be on there feet. They cant say that for Reggie Bush as good as he was.
That one guy got blocked by an invisible man. He just fell soon as Joe got near him and Joe didn't even have to fake him out. LOL!
Bob Marley and Silver Shoes can't be beat. BOOMER!

that run against usc . usc had an athletic defense
He was a RB for OU in 74-75 and he had many many runs like this during his time. He was just never on TV do to probation.
1:15 and 1:48 WOW!
Man, Okla had a new great TB every 2-3 years for 10 yrs, straight. Too bad they wern't all great in the NFL. Okla & Nebraska always had great TB's in the 70's and 80's. I love this footage.
Sirscorps billy sims should have won back to back heimans. This tells me it will never be done again. AG was not that speacial
Believe that is Derland Moore at the 55 second mark breaking up the pitch.
The greatest run I ever saw. For sure.
My name is also jw

Is it just me or does everyone else see some of "little joe" in Demarco Murry.

True... be got about 3 yards but ran about 40.. he had many many runs that would amaze people but he was never on TV do to probation.

You forgot to include this one from "72 versus Clemson.....ruclips.net/video/SkmKk2FEtaI/видео.html
lose 30 yds on a punt return to get back 25.
lmao. Not remotely RB. He would have been in the end zone.
Rewatch to Orange Bowl. You still don't get the difference between USC and UO. It's an ocean wide and just as deep.

Music was dope
Joe Washington was a can’t take your eyes off player and a very exhilarating to watch. He reminded one of Gale Sayers with breakaway runs.

When Joe Wash was with the Colts he was like a one man show at times. He was fantastic in a Monday night game in the late 70's.
