I think Sondheim chose infidelity - and specifically a woman's - to convey the message to make things edgier.
I remember I had to use the bathroom while seeing the movie but I was holding it because I didn't want to miss anything. WHile she was singing I just thought "ok, nothing important is happening, im going to go" and when i come back shes dead.
I love the constant switch between her being excited that she kissed the man of her dreams, the guilt because she has a child and husband and her sadness that she can’t have the dream and her family
