Fell asleep while watching at about 4 am and I woke up about 2 hours later to cory screaming at the top of his lungs. Scared the crap out of me. I thought someone next door was dying.
So, in addition to what Elise said below here are more clarifications from random parts of the game: - Jessica, Lynn, and Blake were all friends as kids. Jessica knew Blake had a little crush going on with Lynn and teased him about it because the two were close friends. - The guilt Blake feels throughout the game is because had he not left Jessica alone, she would not have died most likely. - Jessica was killed by the father after Blake left, by accident. Yes, assume that he was that kind of priest. She fell down the stairs trying to get away from him and Blake stumbled in to see her at the bottom of the stairs and the priest at the top. The priest then convinces Blake that he was confused and later covers up the death by hanging Jessica's body to make it seem like a suicide. - Knoth, the cult leader guy, said at the end of the game that he killed all of his kids. That didn't mean that everyone in the town was dead; everyone in the town died Jamestown-style. It has to do with the reason why Blake and Lynn were there in the first place and what the guy who gave Blake shelter told him. Knoth had a problem of raping all the women and girls in the town because it was his right. He then aborted all of the pregnancies he caused cause "God" told him too because they would be the Anti Christ. The man who gave Blake shelter, his daughter was the girl who had made it back to civilization and was found dead and pregnant and was the reason why Blake and Lynn had come to investigate her mysterious death. Assume that all the pregnancies were aborted because he feared that the fetus that survived would bring about the end of the cult's reality. -The people in the woods who saw Blake as a messiah and crucified him were all people thrown out from the cult and blocked from reentering the town. They all have syphilis, which is because of Knoth. That is why they are ostracized. -Val is the name of the person who steals Lynn away and tries to seduce Blake. Val is referred to by the game devs as "they." Val, like Knoth, believes that Lynn's child is the Anti-Christ, but unlike Knoth, they want the birth to come forth. Completely irrelevant but a sick detail: if you look around when you finally get back to Lynn in the mine shaft, the Heretics, Val's group, are very much having sex. -Lynn is pregnant due to the experiment that is being run on the town. (See Elise's comment) This is where a bit of Outlast lore is necessary to understand this game because all 3 are interlinked. Murkoff's experiment from Outlast 1/Whistleblower has an odd side effect of cause hysterical/psychosomatic pregnancies in women -- their bodies think they are pregnant but they aren't but will go through the whole process. This is why in the earlier two games there are zero women present in the entire asylum despite their being an entire women's block. If you look at Blake's shadow when he is holding the baby right after it is born, there is no shadow for the baby. For a team that puts this much thought into its games, we are going to assume that this is not a mistake or something they conveniently left out. There was no baby; it was a psychosomatic pregnancy; Blake has been in the town long enough to begin to hallucinate like the rest of the cult members and thinks he sees a baby. - Jessica constantly running out of nowhere is usually the hint you get that either: you need to follow her to know where to go or that something is about to start chasing you. It just goes back to the whole thing of Blake needing to stay with her when the father tried to pull her away. - If you look back at all the recordings taken in the school, there is nothing to see, implying that all school sequences are Blake hallucinating, which would be a product of being exposed to the radio tower experiment being run on the town. - If you look at Jessica's neck when she prays at the last time you see her, her throat has been slit. Blake is praying with a dead girl. This happens before Blake is swallowed up by the light so we are going to assume that he is dead, making Blake the second Outlast protagonist that dies by the end of the game (the other was the journalist contacted in the earlier two games). You were completely right to compare this game to Dark Souls. Outlast games are complicated and difficult and they really only make sense when you really know the game, whether that be playing through the first two a couple of times to understand how the devs want you to behave and react as a protagonist or reading through all of the notes that appear throughout the three games. Mind you, people agree that the story line for this is a bit hard to get the first time around, especially with the bouncing back and forth between hallucinating school sequence and the town, but once you know that this is a part of the same universe as the previous two games and you have read all the notes thus far, it is easier to get an idea about what exactly is going on here. The devs designed these games so that you need to play them through a couple of times, sometimes to just explore the environment and figure out where you need to go, sometimes to get the storyline, and sometimes to figure out the most efficient pathing to take to complete the game. They are intended to be difficult and frightening, but the more you play it the easier it is and the more you can predict the scares. Maybe you'll consider getting some friends and trying out Outlast Trials when it's released (should hopefully be this year, 2022), where we will get to see another of the Murkoff Corporation's experiments. It's a group game, but I think you can play it solo, where you work to complete specific tasks.
The fact that Blake literally ripped himself off the cross, got buried alive, and is being reminded of the death of his childhood friend and this mans is STILL going after his wife.. thats dedication. Blake has earned my respect.

For what I've heard, the white flashing lights are the main cause of everybody losing it, and the murkoff company are the one behind it because it was supposed to be an "experiment." If you look closely when Linn supposedly gives "birth" and Blake graves the baby the shadow shows that he's not holding anything, Hence her line "There's nothing there." These flashing lights are the main cause of Blake having the illusions of his past with Jessica, that's why sometimes when he sees these lights he's back at the school as a little boy. At the end when he gets out of the chapel the light he saw was the last one to finally break him, leaving him stuck on his past, I also read somewhere that some men of the murkoff company actually found Blake in a "catatonic" state, claiming he was holding a baby but the men didn't saw what he was seeing, and declared him "Insane." So he's still alive, but his mind is just stuck on his horrible past, that's why he's back at the school in the end.

I just check google to get meaning of it. Professionals have 3 theories and this one stuck on me oof. The third theory is related to certain chemical changes in the nervous system that are related to depressive disorders. It’s possible that these chemical changes are responsible for the symptoms of false pregnancy.
