Hey there, I honestly don’t know an actual scientific number. When I built it I had seen single jack presses before made with steel beams, so i figured that if I put 2/8 ton bottle jacks on, I could even the pressure out without having a steel bean top and bottom. I definitely had enough pressure. They were cheap to buy, like $40 ea.
Luc Masure hey! I already had a skate board, so I took an outline of the kick and then set up a straight edge to measure how much concave was in the board. Then I basically just altered the measurements equally to get from flat in the center to the desire wheel arch flair on the outside
Oscar Paladines Hey dude! I moved back to Oz, so I’m a bit out of action on the work shop front. Maybe some day in the next 6 months/year I will get back up and running in my own shop. Maybe even make another press of my own with an even better tutorial 😉
I’ve messed up I think. Tried to use 190 x 45 treated pine and the stuff is so hard to cut with a jigsaw and the cuts aren’t very vertical. Not to mention the stuff stinks. Oh well, I’ll try to rescue something with a LOT of sanding 😂. I’m also looking into the vacuum bag method from Roarockit. That looks pretty cool.
Kingston Eldridge I like your thinking with the 190x45 👍🏼 but you it could be a lot more harder to get the shape right. Ideally, if you poured concrete in to a mould, around an uncut deck blank, that’s key. But those roarakit vacuum bags should get you going 👍🏼👍🏼
the plans I worked off used 2 x 8s so I thought I was golden using 45mm but it turns out that 2 x 8s are actually only 1 1/2 inch wide not 2inch at all. So my 7 lots of 45mm makes a very wide mold with the curve spread wider than it should be. I’m looking at pulling the middle plank out which drops the overall width down to around the same as the plans. I think I can rescue it but we will see. It might make a pretty heavily concave board. Who knows, I could be inventing the next big thing in skateboard design 😂
I took some measurements of the outside edge of a standard deck and started with that shape, then gradually changed them as I worked my way in to the flat boards in the center. Once you have the outer shape and the inner shape, you can figure it out.
I haven’t gone down the bamboo path yet. A mate told me once that it can get quite expensive, but I think it looks cool and definitely is worth doing one. One day 😃
Juan Partida Hey, cheers man! My little Business is called ‘The 4221 project’ and I’m located in gowanus, Brooklyn. I only made about 20 boards last year, but will probs ramp it up this year
I really like your video, just a little bit dangerous to watch with headphones on. You should really take some extra minutes in editing to level your audio ;)
Do you have any reference points to take measurements from for the concave and nose and tail? Building a press myself for my company but I don’t want to just copy everyone else’s
Domino Board Co. Yo! I basically started by getting the distance the kicks per apart, and getting the kick height. (There are some images on google, or just measure a few skate boards) Then I wanted the board to be flatter in the middle, so I made sure 3 pieces of wood were flat. Then I think I measured a few boards to get an average concave and wheel arch I was happy with. But other than that I literally was working it out on the wood, as I was making it. I wish I had done it all on paper, so it could have been documented....
You should definitely give it a crack! Worked out pretty good for me, pressed about 100 boards over the years. I’ve sold it now because I moved country, but I’ll make another bigger and better one!
@@Benjaminjohnwilliams Ah great! Yeah I thought to have one just to make some for myself and friends. Will look into it more now :D Thanks for the great video, I hope you make another video when you make your new press!
Hey man, I wish I could send a set, but they are long gone… Not to worry, I made them myself, and you can too. Just get another skate deck and sit it on a table, and take some measurements. Mark the center of each bend in the rail, and the center of the board. Take all measurements back to that. Each template will do all 4 quarters of the board.
360noscopebogan not sure if you can buy one anywhere, I always wanted to make one. The most expensive parts is the jacks, which were $40ea. I think the whole press may have been $250-$300 I’m upgrading it to a steel frame very shortly. The wood just can’t take the pressure anymore
John Tillotson I have done 2 before, but I stick one. It takes me too long to get the glue on all the veneers. I usually leave it in over night or if I put one in the morning, take out in the afternoon
Jimmyz Marín I used sheets of 18mm mdf. The press is 1m long and the panel were cut into 300mm section and the shaped traces on the center to get a top and bottom piece
Matyáš Krejčí cheers, appreciate it! I forgot to mention, but you can see at the end of the video I ended up putting a piece of 1/4 steel plate above each jack to stop it crushing the wood. Works a treat!
C5 Flippers Hey man, I basically looked a couple decks to get the outside shape, then gradually changed each piece in towards the center to flat, then belt sanded and bondo. I didn't do a great amount of research, just made it up as I went 👍🏼
Haha well spotted. I had them up for a long time, but Just recently went on a deleting spree to clean up my channel. Want to try focus on some better content....coming soon!
5 or 6 lengths of framing 2 sheets of 20mm MDF board 4 springs 2 car jacks Strapping for timber 4 Castors Glue and screws Hooks for the springs Once you have the mould built, basically use what ever you can find to keep the cost down. If you have a welder, weld a frame. The strapping is holding out good for now.
Oh sorry. I traced the basic shape (angle of the kick) off a skateboard for the center piece (the flattest) and figured out it had roughly the thickness of the board concave. Once you are happy with your outside shape, you just need to gradually taper it back to flat in the middle. I basically just used what ever I had near me to get the perfect arcs like :buckets, paint tins, bowl...etc Once your happy with one end, just imitate it on other side. Use paper templates before timber. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I took measurements from other decks and basically freestyled it! You have nothing to loose really. How long did you have it in the press?
Usually over night (8h)
please make a vid of how u made that car jack press frame!

How did You do the shape of the two Parts of the press ?
I traced a single kick carve board I had, then took a few measurements of how the concave was.
Changed it a little, and mirror matched everything

I allowed 12h, finished it the next day. Ready to press
Looks like maybe 15 x 16mm mdf to make the top and bottom of the mould?
Kingston Eldridge yeah, ended up picking up the sheets for $10 a pop.
16mm/ 3/4” is a good size to work with

What kind of wood did you use for the skateboard?
Canadian rock maple

how much did everything cost? i been really wanting to make my own boards

Moonman I don't really sell them, I mainly make them for friends. Might do some RUclips give aways one day!
i just meant does it feel like a downgrade skating those boards? i'm just curious. I was thinking about making some myself
Moonman no way man! Feels exactly like a factory made deck. Has same sort of flex and strength. I tried snapping one by jumping on it, and couldn't.

What kind of wood do you use? and what are the measurements each sheet of wood? Example 1mts × .45 mts × .03mts
Jimmyz Marín I used sheets of 18mm mdf.

what wood do you use to do everything?
Lucian De Jesus mdf, it's easy to work with
Benjamin john williams more and the press is made of wood
Lucian De Jesus the wood is just old framing, what ever I could find. The decks are made from Canadian maple
Benjamin john williams many thanks for your information.
Amazing video, but how the wood hold against the power of the jack, doesn’t the jack just made a hole in the wood on the top?
