I'm glad I'm not the only one who found Dr. E kind of adorkable and liked her getting on with Rimmer. I have to admit I did find her getting flushed out the airlock a little too dark.
Irene would have been an interesting crewmate if she had survived. Though they'd have needed to touch up her character to remain gormless, but vaguely useful, and adding to the comedy.

I mean his projection could definitely go through the door but his light beam would most likely be stuck trying to get through it. Unless the light beam can sort of phase through objects as well.
This episode started of a trend of episodes suggesting there may be other humans in stasis or suspended animation waiting for the crew to find them but they a die in the episode. Samsara had the two crew members of Samsara getting flash fried when they woke from stasis and Give and Take had the psychopath scientist in stasis who ended up being killed by cat
Apparently they were supposed to reunite with Kochanski, but they didn't have the budget to do what Doug Naylor wanted so they opted out. Least that's what I heard, that's why Lister mentions Kochanski so much in X compared to XI and XII.
Speaking of which, I feel like that's why they mentioned Kochanski in Skipper so just in case the show gets renewed they just foreshadowed what they plan on ending the show on. Just some speculation.
Personally, I'd rather they didn't bring her back. That chance was wasted in Series VII and VIII, as they didn't do anything substantive with her. I almost feel that, given the circumstances of her mention in 'Skipper', it was done more for laughs than anything.
i guess since her name was Irene E it was ironic after all Rimmer's ranting about health and safety that he he kills her all cos he himself left a box in the hallway to be tripped over.
It would be funny if when Lister talked about how Rimmer screwed up and killed the original crew... Rimmer just said, “Hey. That wasn’t me. That Rimmer is dead. I was born 3 Million years after that. Im his hologram”
@Geoffrey forever I'm still curious as to what they were implying in Mechocracy. Were they refeering to Rimmer getting blown-up in Timeslides or the unseen death of nano-Rimmer
I've actually had the kind of kebabs they serve in the UK, the kind featured in this episode: The trick is basically to either don't go overboard with the veggies, to not bother with having any, or to start by eating the vegetables with a fork. Of course, it seems that Lister ordered a particularly large one from Kryten, SO...
I'm always amazed at how much trouble there is BTS on Red Dwarf. It seems like Season 4 was the only one without significant drama & screw-ups during production.
oh there was drama during season 4 alright haven't you seen the docs, season 4 had a female director and craig played merry hell with her by pissing about and time wasting during shoots and she couldn't control him so they soon replaced her for series 5.
Why isn't Lister more upset about the professor being sucked out of the airlock as he has believed he is the last human being in the universe since the beginning of Red Dwarf and he finally meets a living human in Entangled and not soon after she dies being sucked out of the airlock
I think it's one of those times you invoke Rule of Funny. Also he was with the entire resurrected crew for a whole season so the "Last Human" thing isn't much of a big deal anymore.
Lister in Entangled: "Have you got a pen?" Rimmer in Thanks for the Memory: "I've always got a pen." Also, was this the first time Rimmer was told that when Lister died he will automatically be shut down? Harsh!!!
Its strange how Doug Naylor can write an entire season which i think is hysterical and easily alongside Season 6 (IMO) as 1 of the best yet write episodes like Season 11 - Give and take or Season 12 cured. which are just appauling.. xD Eitherway another great Season 10 episode.
As Chloë Annett's Kochanski is from a parallel universe and still hasn't returned, I'm wondering if since she left Red Dwarf prior to "Back to Earth", she found a linkway back to her universe. For all we know, she could well be reunited with her crew and the guys aren't even aware. Plus she doesn't get a lot of mention from Series XI onwards, as though Lister's given up on her.
Both this and Dear Dave were marred by production problems, and while I think that was probably for the best with Dear Dave since the reshoots gave Doug time to write funnier material, with Entangled I definitely think the end product suffered. The Chimp was going to be a much bigger part of the episode but because the guy playing the chimp could only perform for 45 minutes at a time and then needed an hour's rest Doug had to cut down his part significantly so in the final episode chimp is only on screen for about 2 minutes and the whole subplot feels a bit redundant.
originally dr e wasnt in the script would have used the chimp and the ending originally planned for the episode would have seen Rimmer and Lister bickering like a divorced couple over looking after the chimp . It was changed when it emerged that there were rules and regulations which governed how long performer Peter Elliott could play the role of the chimp without taking a break
Fun Fact: This was actually the first episode I watched. I didn’t get into the lore until I kept watching clips on RUclips and reading the Red Dwarf wiki.
Rimmer's fixation on health and safety reminds me of this one guy at work everyone hated because he treated it like a religion whose guidelines must be followed. He'd file a report if you removed your safety glasses just to scratch an itch on your head. He even filed a report when he found a sweet wrapper in the bin, due to no food being allowed on the work floor. Turns out the sweet belonged to a worker with diabetes who was just trying to control his blood sugar levels. The health and safety guy still wanted to report him. Eventually, the health and safety nut was fired due to abusing his authority. We all had a party in the break room after he left.
Yeah, all the "health and safety" stuff sounds like the writer(s) have a beef with the bureaucracy of making television when it comes to stunts and stuff. Particularly with the BBC. However there is a reason the BBC are careful to the point of paranoia with Health and Safety because in the 80s and 90s they were far too lax about it and people died: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Late,_Late_Breakfast_Show#Death_of_Michael_Lush_and_cancellation And also the occasion when a Children's TV presenter was accidentally blown up/set on fire live: ruclips.net/video/uQo6t9vcZYc/видео.html - she survived but "suffered burns and temporary hearing loss, which led to a successful lawsuit against the BBC" Aside from that I think RD is at it's weakest when it leans heavy satire/social commentary such as this.
I liked this episode but damn they don't seem bothered that irene died just like that. it's like oh that cute lovely doctor lady (one of the few pleasant humans still left in existence) just died horribly and Rimmer and Lister are like "oh well, so anyways".
From what I remember, Kochanski wasn't going to appear in this episode, but it would've ended up with the chimp. But due to regulations for costumed actors in the UK, they couldn't use the monkey as much as they wanted, since the actor has to take a lot more breaks. But Kochanski was meant to be in the last two episodes of the season, in a two parter. A lot of it was going to be on location, but they had zero location filming budget, and due to the amount of time they had scheduled outside, and the weather, they decided they couldn't do it, and hence they spent a day doing the forest scene in Lemons. So the next episode Dear Dave was only half written when it was filmed. The vending machine subplot and Rimmer getting demoted were all written and filmed later, after studio filming. And with The Beginning, since it was the planned script for the film, Doug just thought "Well I've got a perfectly good script here, and by this point it's never gonna happen. I'm an episode short, I'll just cut this up to 30 minutes and use that." But then I suppose a lot of this you're gonna mention in the next two videos anyway, I imagine they're already recorded.
That's too much of a 'neat' ending. Rimmer should have been allowed to get his end away again, first time since series 5's Holoship. It'd be a much funnier show if the supposedly charmless one got more breaks with women because it's not like the others do.
