Well, it has to do with even more repetitive level design than the first two games, rather uninspired enemies in comparison to the first two games, the lack of an ability to completely go up to the top of the screen in comparison to the first two games, the fact that the game itself is way more difficult than the first two games, the fact that it turned from a pair of single-screen platformer games into a quasi-shooter game in the vein of Space Invaders, which honestly did things better than this game, and five, almost six, years earlier, and, last but not least, Mario was NOT in this game and you have the one hit wonder in Stanley the Exterminator, Gastronomicon3264. There's a lot of unsolved questions about this game that really intrigue me. I want to know the development history, why the gameplay is such a departure from the previous games, more details on the decision to remove Mario and his newly introduced brother after getting their own game, maybe Donkey Kong with two players felt more like a Mario Bros sequel? Above all else, I'd really like to know how all of Nintendo felt about the game and the future at the time of it's release. I also hope we eventually get some deep cut refrence to Stanley.
There was actually a fair bit of confidence in this from nintendo, they were quite dissapointed it did not go as far as the other donkey kong games and blamed the fact mario wasn't in it instead of the gameplay. They did not see calling this donkey kong 3 meant it had to be a platformer but instead just that donkey kong had to be there. Stanley himself is not considered a mario brother, just a person being pestered by the greedy kong again but instead of damsels it's a livelyhood. Nintendo did not use mario because of mario bros releasing at the same time, feeling like mario becoming a plumber was enough change. Though not understood why stanley never returned it is most likely nintendo forgetting since it was a commercial failure where it only had donkey kong be recognizable.
